i think one of the most common dangers I run into in the edible and medicinal plant scene is the problem of “can you eat it” vs. “should you eat it”
a lot of websites and books these days will be like “ten wild plants you can use to make tea” without then listing the actual use for those teas because all they care about is the novelty of making your own tea from things you picked in the woods.
They tell you stuff like “A wonderfully cleansing medicine, it supports the liver, stimulates the flow of urine and the removal of waste by the kidneys.”
And people are so into the idea of cleansing their bodies of supposed toxins, that sounds great!
But what I know is that what they really mean is, this plant is a diuretic, meaning if you use it for tea, you’re going to peeing All. Day. Long. Every. Ten. Minutes.
Which isn’t fun if you’re on a hike or about to get back in your car and drive an hour home.
Some popular plants recommended for teas are used as contraceptives and morning after treatments. So here you are, trying to get pregnant, drinking your natural to rid your kidneys of impurities, being healthy as can be, and all along you’re taking birth control!
And if you’re already taking birth control and trying to not get pregnant, the plant can mess you up too.
There are plants that mess with antidepressants, and with blood pressure medicine, that make you sick to your stomach, that messes with your blood, and on and on.
And all of these sources will just list them as something you can eat, because hey, you won’t die if if you do!
Which is true, you’ll live, but at what cost!!!
Please remember herbal remedies and edible plants have always been consumed and applied with a PURPOSE, and unless you know what that purpose is, don’t consume them just because you can. It’s a bad idea.

Playing Cards Divination
Tumblr media
If you donot have your own set of tarot/oracle cards. you can use normal playing cards instead!
How to
Use them just like oracle/tarot cards. First charge the deck, you do this by holding them in your dominant hand and pushing your energy into them, then touch each card one by one. fan the deck out in your non-dominant hand and ask for guidance and clear readings (from who ever you want readings to be influenced by, eg: god/dess, universe, spirits) From here I like to start with a little game to make sure the cards are giving me accurate readings, pick a person you know really well, then ask the deck for a card that represents that person the best, find the meaning, and if the card is accurate you’re good to go. if not cleanse it in the moon light or under salt then try again (you can skip this step, it just lets me know my cards are accurate and it also shows me a bit of the personality of the deck) Now you are ready for your reading, you can do a simple single card draw for advise to keep in mind for the day, or a 3 card draw 1- past 2-present 3- future, there are of cause a bunch of very complicated card spreads and alot of simple once, they aren’t hard to find

How I make spellcandles
Tumblr media
I was making a spell candle for the Imbolc ritual I’m hosting for the coven tomorrow and figured: why not turn it into a little tutorial? So here is my version of the spell candles!
Tumblr media
What you need: (note: I made a candle for creativity and inspiration, so everything matches that goal. Change herbs, colours and stones to match any goal you want/need!)
🕯 a base candle, either white or a colour that works for your goal
🕯 through-and-though coloured candles for dripping in colours that match your goal. I usually use two or three, in this case yellow for happiness and inspiration and orange for creativity
🕯 herbs, I used basil (creativity), rose (passion/motivation), mistletoe (fertility for ideas) and mugwort (creativity)
🕯 small stone chips, I used aventurine, citrine and burnt amethyst (all for creativity)
🕯 oils, I used jasmine (creativity)
🕯 ribbon and charm (optional, but pretty!)
🕯 baking paper to protect your work surface
Tumblr media
Start with carving some words or symbols into the candle. Today I used a bindrune for creativity, the runes kenaz (inner fire), wunjo (happiness) and gebo (gift).
Tumblr media
Now drip the first colour. Make sure to first go around the edges for the pretty drips and then fill in the top.
Tumblr media
Next are the herbs, stones and oil. Simply sprinkle them on top and arrange the bigger pieces so they are spread out a bit. Press the stones gently down into the still soft wax for sturdyness.
Tumblr media
Drip the last colour, making sure to set but not drown the herbs, and tadaa! One pretty spellcandle! But wait, there’s more!
Tumblr media
Tie the ribbon around the candle with one knot.
Tumblr media
Slide on your charm and knot again, fitting it snuggly against the candle.
Tumblr media
Make a pretty bow and trim the ends, and you’re done!
Burn it during your spell (note: remove the ribbon before it catches and reuse it!), place it on your altar or even make them to give away as gifts!
Also, feel free to tag me if you make one with the tutorial, I’d love to see them! 🌙

The Fancy Grimoire Masterpost
NOTE: This is the rebloggable version and is up to date as of November 4, 2017. I am creating a permanent page on my blog which I will continue to update as I add and post new pages. That will be located here.
So my grimoire is not at all organized. When I have more information to add, I just add it with no regard for sections. Also I have not posted all the pages that I have made, because not all of the information is mine. Where applicable, I will link to the original blog or post with the information that I used, without actually posting the design of the page. Content theft isn’t cool, people, even when showing off pretty aesthetic pages!

What people think a witch’s lair looks like
Tumblr media Tumblr media
What it’s more likely to look like
Tumblr media
There are messy witches that like Star Wars and PĂłkemon, whose dogs sleep on their beds without permission
Tumblr media
And they can’t fit more stones in their bowls and have salt all over the house and save that especially pretty bottle for the right thing, but end up never using it.
Tumblr media
And keep quartz next to the phone to prevent bad news.
Tumblr media
And collect and drink too many kinds of tea.
Tumblr media
And have more mason jars filled with things than anyone should ever have, but still do their laundry.
Tumblr media
And have plants everywhere, even by the sink.
Tumblr media
And hang their laundry in the back yard but keep a bundle of rosemary by the back door to prevent bad spirits from entering the house.
Tumblr media
And leave sigils and wallets and keys everywhere.
Tumblr media
And have spices and herbs and microwaves.
Being a witch does not prevent you from being a person.
We’re not an aesthetic and we’re not crazy. We’re people who have decided to reach out for things we cannot see but we can still feel.
And still we eat and we sleep and we’re late for work and we study for exams and watch sports and play music and go clubbing and cry with movies and drive and dance in the shower and watch the news and play video games and go grocery shopping.
And there are plants everywhere and rocks in the corners and tarot decks in drawers and candles in shelves.
We’re people.
We’re people just like everyone.
Stop being so afraid of us.

Study tips for herbalists
A lot of people ask me about how to start learning about herbs and which courses are good, so I decided to put this together for you guys!
Resources
Herbmentor.com
Here are a few useful herbs that are good to start out with
Check out my recommended books
Paul Bergner has excellent information and courses available here
The East West School of Planetary Herbology is a great place to take courses
The Lunar Apothecary is a great for leaning about herb magic and lunar herbology
This website will help you to find local plants (USA only)
Bear Medicine Herbals
Herbcraft.org
Herbal Remedies Advice
HANE is also a good school to check out
Tips
Check out local plant societies to see what activities they have planned. Some of them offer free plant walks that will help you to get to know your local plants
Start experimenting with your (safe) local weeds first. For many of you, this means sorrel, dandelion, plantain, violet leaf, and ground ivy.
Get your warnings and safety information from reputable books and herbalists, not social media (tumblr). There are many rumors on this site about what is and isn’t poisonous, please don’t believe everything you read!
Keep a few materia medica books on hand to check for contraindications and safety instead. My go-to books for checking whether an herb is okay with me are located in the recommended books post above
Pick 1 herb a month to really focus on. Keep in mind that you can do a lot with a few herbs, some of them have dozens of uses
Learn about your herbs by tasting and using them, not just reading! Personal experience is more important than book knowledge (except when it comes to safety)
Equipment
JARS (check the thrift store for cheap finds)
Alcohol - I usually use 80 proof vodka for tinctures but you can also use brandy depending on what you’re making
Oils- I like grapeseed oil and coconut oil
Funnels
Cheese cloth for straining herbs
Kitchen scale
French press (easy way to make loose leaf tea)
Idea of what to start making with herbs
Bruise/injury salves
Bug sprays
Calming tinctures/teas
Digestive tinctures/teas
Pain tinctures
Fomentations
Poultices
I probably forgot a lot of stuff so Ill be adding more in the future!
Read this on my website

New Witch's Shopping Guide
I see a lot of posts saying, “I want to be a witch, what do I need to buy?” While I am 100% against the false idea that you need to buy things to be a witch or practice witchcraft, admittedly there are some things that do make the whole process easier.
Instead of going around to tiny and expensive shops downtown looking for witchy items, hit up your local Wal-Mart and stock the heck up on these crafty supplies:
Candles - get a 100 pack of white unscented tea candles, plus a few other candles you’d like to have. I don’t care what candle magic books say, you don’t need candles in each color.
Skip the cheap incense on this isle. Burn real herbs instead. Buy charcoal disks or do as I do and improvise with tinfoil and a tea light.
Matches - get a big box. Matches are proven to be 150% more fun than lighters and 175% easier to find when you’re in the middle of a ritual.
Herbs/spices - dried rosemary (get double), chamomile, cinnamon sticks, mullein, allspice, and star anise should be enough to keep you entertained. Grab a bag of big dried peppers if you foresee hexing in your future. Also, get a box of sea salt (the bigger the better).
Screw those tiny, overpriced little plastic bottles. Get ethnic brands, especially Mexican. Rosemary is a really common spell/ritual ingredient so stock up.
Thread - get red and black, or get a box set of embroidery thread that girls use to make friendship bracelets out of. It’s about $10 but it has every color you could ever desire and it lasts ages.
Pins and needles - buy a box of thin pins and sewing needles large enough to fit your thread.
I already had sewing supplies at home, but if you need them get a pair of scissors good for cutting fabric and thread.
Scrap fabric - look for small squares of fabric sold at a discount. Try and get a plain, neutral color like beige and whatever else appeals to you.
Notebooks, sketch books, and binders - composition books or spiral bounds are your best friend. If you are an artist, get a drawing book. Choose a thin binder that is easy to handle. Consider spiral bound notebooks and sketch books with perforated edges if you intend to move a lot of stuff in to the binder. Get filler paper if you don’t have it at home.
Don’t bother with fancy pens or art supplies to decorate with. In my opinion, creating an artistic grimoire should be done after a witch has quite a bit of experience and has the time to slow down for it. Don’t confuse witchcraft for drawing fancy spell pages.
Clippers - you will need plant clippers to collect specimens from nature and tend to your own plants at home.
Containers - get ziplock bags (probably the cheapest option) or glass jars if you can afford it. You will need these to help organize your ingredients.
Think ahead for labeling - you may need tape or glue to affix labels to your containers
Live plants - depending on the time of year, the garden department is likely to have a variety of young herbs available. Choose herbs that thrive in your climate or can be kept indoors. Don’t worry about getting the “best” herbs, you can buy what you need for spells dried. Just focus on what you can keep alive and what you’d like to get to know better.

Cascarilla Powder
Tumblr media
- Cascarilla is powdered eggshell. The shells are so finely ground that it feels as soft as baby powder. Any Botanica or store that caters to New Age and Magick ritual will have Cascarilla. You will most normally see it packed into a ketchup cup. When removed from the cup, it maintains its form and can be used as one would use a soft piece of chalk. Or, if mixed with water, you will find that the soft chalk dissolves easily. For most of the purposes, it is used as a piece of chalk, so the shells sold in stores are convenient. - Cascarilla repels negative energy, and the vibration of negative energy. It is such a potent cleansing and protecting agent, that it can be used in any number of ways to guard from evil, malicious magic, and disease. It has many uses. Here are the most common:
Add some to your bath water for a purification bath or sprinkle in the wash bucket for scrubbing the floor to disperse negativity.
As a piece of chalk to draw sigils and circles of protection for magickal rituals and spellwork.
Add a bit of water and use it to paint symbols on your skin or use it dry to dust your body for all over protection.
This is great to have if you are going to meditate, astral project, or perform visualizations. You can use it as a powder and dust yourself with it or you can use it as a chalk and make the sign of the cross on different areas of your body (back of neck, forehead, temples, hands, chest, and bottom of feet).
If you have psychic abilities, you can dust yourself or make the sign of the cross as previously mentioned, and it protects you from psychic attack and energy vampires. It also keeps away negative spirits.
Cascarilla also keeps away non-corporeal beings (spirits, ghosts, demons, etc). If you feel like your home may be haunted, this would be a good repellent (after a thorough house cleansing!!). Be warned, if you have spirits around that you like talking to, you may find it more difficult to communicate with them! Cascarilla does not discriminate between good and evil – it just provides a barrier between the physical and spiritual world.
House protection: use as a piece of chalk. Going around the house clockwise, etch the sign of the cross on either side of the door, above the door, and on the threshold. When doing the windows – do above, below, and both sides of the window. Do this with all doors and all windows of the home.
House protection - perimeter of house. Same as above, just on the outside of the house. You can wash the windows and doors with water infused with the powder, sprinkle some around the house, or draw sigils like above.
~Cascarilla Chalk~
Tumblr media
-Materials-
6 eggshells
1 tsp very hot tap water
1 tsp flour
A clean rock
A sheet of paper
Spoon
Cup
Paper towel
Food coloring (optional)
-Instructions-
Wash the eggshells well, so they do not have any egg left in them. Let them dry for an hour. The shells must be completely dry or the chalk will fall apart.
Place a sheet of paper on a hard surface. Grind the shells on the paper with a rock. Make sure the rock is clean so you don’t get dirt ground in with the eggshells. (You can grind them in a coffee grinder or food processor too).
Continue grinding the eggshells until you have a fine powder. Make sure you have enough powder to fill a large spoon, which is enough for one stick of chalk.
When you have enough of the fine powder to make a stick of chalk, sift or pick up little bits of eggshells that are not ground up and throw them away. Leaving in little bits of eggshells may cause your chalk to break up.
Put the teaspoon of flour and the teaspoon of hot water into a cup. Stir together to make a paste.
Add the spoonful of eggshell powder into the paste and mix well. It may help to mash it with the back of the spoon.
Add a few drops of food coloring if you want colored chalk. Too many drops will make the paste too wet.
On a clean, dry surface roll the mixture into a stick. Wrap the stick up in a strip of paper towel and set aside to dry. Drying takes about three days.
Once dry, peel the paper off one end and your chalk is ready to use!
