Charles Kinsey, 47, a behavior therapist from South Florida was shot in the leg three times by the police in North Miami while laying on the ground with his arms up and trying to help his patient with autism who had run away from a group home.
It all started when someone called 911 and said there was a man walking around with a gun. However it was Kinsey’s patient who was sitting on the ground cross-legged, playing with a toy truck.
Charles got shot by police despite telling them he was only trying to help his patient.
The police shot him, handcuffed him and left him on ground bleeding.
North Miami police have not released much information at all. They haven’t released the officer’s name, they haven’t given us an update on the investigation. However, they did say that the state attorney is now a part of this investigation.
Women scientists made up 25% of the Pluto fly-by New Horizon team. Make sure you share this, because erasing women’s achievements in science and history is a tradition. Happens every day.
Okay, so with the recent resurgence of the Black Lives Matter movement, I wanted to bring attention to a twitter exchange that disturbed me.
Somehow, while we have taken to the streets yelling “Black Lives Matter” it has been simplified to “Black Men Matter”. And they do! But when you start to look at the silencing of black women’s voices in order to please the black men around them, if you’re not worried, you worry me.
As a child, I was constantly taught that I should take the brunt of pain without complaint because that was the measure of my strength. Society and my family were so concerned with humbling me and making me feel small, that I truly started to believe I was. Everything I did would be minimized until I, too, began to think of my contributions, thoughts, and opinions as insignificant. I think Keke Palmer does a great job of explaining my sentiments in this clip:
So, to black women who are labeled:
Bossy: Keep leading the way
Aggressive: Keep reaching your goals
Difficult: Keep speaking your truth
Emotional: Keep being passionate
Weak: Keep protecting your peace
Awkward: Keep being you
I have been and will continue to be proud of being a black woman. This blog will continue to be a safe place for us.
