The Lowdown on Deep In The Jungle Records with DJ Hybrid
We sit down with DJ Hybrid to chat about his record label Deep in the Jungle ahead of its first ever trip to Glasgow.
“Right now Hybrid's probably the best producer in the jungle scene,” says Frogbeats promoter Jamie (J.M.D). “He’s just won an award at the We Love Jungle Awards as Best Jungle Producer, and the Deep in the Jungle record label won Best Jungle Label. It’s the cream of the crop, so who better to bring to Glasgow?”
It’s the second year in a row that Deep in the Jungle has been named Best Jungle Label, which we’d call a massive win for a relatively young label. They already had a couple of years’ worth of nominations under their belt after launching six years ago, and they’ve since spent their time fostering a strong contribution to the jungle scene. For Hybrid, this year’s win is testament to their committed fanbase bigging up the project. “It's a really good feeling,” he says. “The support we’ve had, it's been great. A lot of people always say to me that Deep in the Jungle is their go to label for jungle releases at the moment”.
With good reason. When he first started out Hybrid didn’t have a bank of big names that he could call on to feature on his label - instead he did a sweep of Soundcloud and recruited a team of obscure but high quality producers that he found there. Now Deep in the Jungle has a reputation for unearthing up and coming jungle DJs and giving them the platform they need to rise inside the scene - not least DJ Epicentre, who this year was nominated for Best Breakthrough Jungle DJ.
Rewind to 2013, and Hybrid had noticed a real dearth of modern jungle labels releasing new music - there were the older, established drum and bass labels releasing jungle tunes, or the smaller jungle labels who lacked the resources to push releases out on a big scale, but not a lot in between. Hybrid was already managing his own drum and bass label, Audio Addict Records, and decided it was time to start something more overtly tied to the junglist sound. “My favourite labels have always been the old classics like V Records and Philly Blunt and Chronic - Bryan Gee’s labels,” he says. “And I always liked the diversity that he’d have. You'd have your drum and bass rollers on V Records, then you’d have the more jungly rare groove kind of stuff on Philly Blunt. That's kind of what I've ended up doing with my own labels”.
He’s been riding the wave of jungle’s resurgence ever since. Junglism has enjoyed a strong comeback in recent years, bringing with it a renewed appreciation for the scene’s roots but also a fresh nu-school sound that Deep in the Jungle has helped promote. “It’s the original vibe of jungle, the original essence of the music, but with more updated modern production techniques,” says Hybrid. “We make it sound as loud and big as modern drum and bass tunes. It's like jungle for the modern scene, you know”.
So why is jungle making this massive comeback? Our Jamie thinks it’s all to do with the junglist attitude. “It’s underground, it’s arty. I think because jungle was this raw original thing, people really took to it,” he says. “All the younger folk have never really heard that before so now DJs and producers are making that older sounding jungle, people are getting back into it. They’re actually going back in history and finding the best of jungle and drum and bass from the very start”.
And the scene is looking good in Glasgow. After lying a little quiet for a while, there are now three or four crews - including ourselves - amplifying the city’s jungle sound. Jamie gives special props to Bass Injection, who started throwing parties last year in Broadcast. “There’s definitely more people attending the events that go on in Glasgow now,” he says. “Some of the other promoters have been saying they want to start to bring bigger DJs to the city as well, so there are people in the scene who want to push it forward”.
What can we expect from Deep in the Jungle’s first ever trip to Glasgow? According to Hybrid, he and his resident DJs are pulling out bassy goodness from across the junglist spectrum. “Kumarachi, he plays a lot of deeper techie rolling tunes. And then DJ Cautious, he has a bit more of a reggae soundclash background, so he’ll probably bring in more old school sounding ragga jungle,” he says. “I always consider myself a DJ first, before being a producer, so I'll play a lot of like nu-school and old school stuff, but then I also like to throw in a lot of heavier tunes and mix it up a bit”. All backed up by High Society Soundsystem, things are going to get loud.
Advanced tickets (£10 +BF) are on sale here. More on the door.

Interview: Introducing Liquid Funktion + Mix
In the past 6 years the Scottish D&B/Jungle scene has seen a flourish of new crews and the sound being broadcast at music festivals. There's a strong ethos of collaboration and respect amongst the scene, with a bunch of new soundsystems and crews sprouting up. In the past couple of years, Liquid Funktion - made up of Jamie and Ken, two of the friendliest faces you'll meet on the circuit - have played an integral part in pushing the sound on the East Coast. We're excited to bring them to Glasgow for the first time this Sunday at Sub Club! We caught up with them ahead of the party to download their musical knowledge and see what plans they have on the horizon.
Frogbeats: How did Liquid Funktion come to be?
Liquid Funktion: We were already DJing at parties across Edinburgh but wanted to fill a void in D&B scene with some more Liquid. Our first night was a charity fundraiser for Alzheimer's U.K. in the Annexe just over 2 years ago - £300 raised and a vibey evening. We still love the full spectrum of D&B and Jungle so try and cover as much as possible.
Frogbeats: What are your first memories of the Jungle / Drum & Bass Scene?
Ken: No one liking it when I put it on at the school disco….I think hearing Noisia - Stigma amongst some other gems during a warm-up set for The Prodigy in Glasgow about 10 years ago. After that, my first proper D&B night seeing Fabio & Grooverider, hearing liquid and jungle on a big system had me hooked.
Jamie: A big breakthrough for really getting into the genre for me was the Sub Focus first album when i was about 15, especially Timewarp and Last Jungle. As for the breakthrough event that got me hooked, it was at Cable London: Get Darker vs Drum & Bass Arena.
Frogbeats: Which producers and DJs inspire you, individually, when preparing for a night?
Ken: Always been a fan of how varied DJ Marky’s sets are. Playing a set which can keep people on the dancefloor from start to finish is what I’m aiming for. Producer-wise, Fixate (Exit Records) is really on it right now.
Jamie: Alix Perez and Calibre for the variation they’ve brought over the years. Best DJ sets for me are seeing Goldie b2b Doc Scott smash a 4 hour Metalheadz boat party at Dimensions Festival in Croatia. Also, seeing Dave from SpectraSoul in London prior to the release of their 3rd album is a stand out. Prompted us to get them booked for Edinburgh!
Frogbeats: What is your favourite Scottish venue to play in?
Liquid Funktion: Our favourite venue is The Mash House, though Bongo is a close second which we’d like to play at more. Sub Club could change all that though...
Frogbeats: Where should we expect to see your name in the coming year?
Liquid Funktion: We’ve got 3 or 4 nights in Edinburgh to look forward to, Woodland Dance Project, plus a couple of ‘away’ shows. We’re always going to other Drum & Bass nights too and have a lot of time and respect for the people in the scene who keep it evolving.
Frogbeats: You've recently had Inja and Spectrasoul booked for your nights (thanks for having us as well by the way!) - can we expect any other big bookings from the Liquid Funktion camp?
Liquid Funktion: Short answer - yes, but a little early to say who. 2-3 times a year is the plan. For as long as we feel there’s an opportunity to bring something a little different to the scene we’ll keep doing it.
Frogbeats: What about your dream booking?
Liquid Funktion: Ken Reid b2b Kenny Ken, (Jamie) BC b2b Bcee. Outside of D&B I’d love a Houndstooth takeover, Special Request, Akkord and Throwing Snow. IAMDDB somewhere too, we’ve been a huge fan of her for a while now.
Frogbeats: What is your best vinyl find?
Ken: Future Cut - Dainjah. Found it cheap and took me years to finally ID it with no label.
Jamie: LSB & DRS’ footnotes EP, pre-ordered before all the tunes had been released and it did not disappoint.
Frogbeats: If you could associate one track with Liquid Funktion, what would it be?
Liquid Funktion: Tough one, but probably Anushka - Never Can Decide (Ivy Lab Remix). Also Jamie’s excellent rendition of the Rodigan speech over Breakage - Together. Enough of the chat for now, “We don’t wanna make too many speeches cos its all about the music”
Frogbeats: Beautiful stuff! Thanks guys. Looking forward to Sunday.
Liquid Funktion: See you at Subby!

Jungle & Breaks, Sundays at Sub Club
vimeo
“Call it jungle music, call it drum & bass, Sunday night sessions, you know the deal, put the smile right back on your face”  Never a truer word spoken from jungle MC and jazz vocalist Cleveland Watkiss introducing Metalheadz Sunday sessions at the Blue Note. 1990s junglists evidently never took much notice of Mondays. Frogbeats don’t intend to neither. Get lost in the basement of the Subclub with the crew that knows all about delving into jungle at 22 Jamaica Street... Back in 2013, Frogbeats night Unleash the Beast drew in a dedicated crew of steppas. Now the collective are back in full force, ready to bring drum & bass to Subby’s famous wall of sound once again. The complete Frogbeats entourage will be in the booth, playing out sets that span across the diverse terrain of jungle and breaks, delivering you into next week with that smile on your face.

Our First Ever 3 Floor Art School Takeover
Frogbeats x Handpicked Hip Hop & Jungle Ft. DJ Vadim, Suff Daddy and a Giant Roland 303 Friday 16th September The Art School Doors 11pm Event: http://bit.ly/2c2Z90k Tickets available through Eventbrite: goo.gl/RXkVd0
Over the past 4 months we have been concocting our biggest event to date alongside the Handpicked family. Featuring the versatile veteran DJ Vadim, Hip Hop sensation Suff Daddy as well as a giant, interactive Roland 303 (courtesy of Ray Interactive), this event is set to blow fresher's week right out the water and in to the frying pan. Globetrotter DJ Vadim, who has released over 10 albums including a number on the Ninja Tune insignia, will be taking a rare moment away from his usual hip hop/reggae/soul tip to join our residents Tuscan Whale, Rize, JMD and host MC Bass Monkey in a dose of the finest in jungle breaks and bass lines. For those of you perhaps not familiar with DJ Vadim or Suff Daddy, here is some material to put you in the know.
The Giant Roland 303 has been one of our favourite finds this year and this will be on our additional third floor. Ray Interactive, the Edinburgh-based group behind this magnificent creation, have been touring it around the UK for the past couple of years at festivals like Bang Face, Kelburn Garden Party and Audio Soup.  Put simply on rayinteractive.org, "giant acid bassline synth based on the TB-303. Trigger and manipulate pre-programmed classic bass lines and drum loops." The installation is completely interactive and will be customised for this event. The group also have a scaled up model of the 909 which we are yet to see. Who knows, maybe we will upgrade...

Hope to see you there.

Hip Hop & Jungle • Art School Takeover with DJ Vadim & Suff Daddy
Frogbeats x Handpicked Hip Hop & Jungle With DJ Vadim & Suff Daddy Friday 16th September The Art School 11pm - 3am ________________ Kicking off the fresh semester with a double dosage of guests gracing our two floor takeover at one of Glasgow’s finest clubbing establishments, The Art School. We’re going that extra mile for the regular rock-ups and new arrivals to the city, with a bunch of extra production and audience interactive activities galore. ________________________________ ☟ THE VICTORIA BAR ☟With DJ Vadim (Jungle Set) & Frogbeats A veteran that knows no boundaries, DJ Vadim is one of the most prolific figures in electronic music today. Since the mid-90s the producer from St Petersburg, now based in Barcelona, has gained himself global acclaim after being introduced to the world by Giles Peterson and John Peel, and later being signed to the Ninja Tune insignia. Renowned for his infectious recipe of global music fusing together dub/reggae, hip hop and soul, Vadim has demonstrated his unquestionable ability to span multiple genres with an adept ear. We’ve enlisted him to join the takeover and play a special jungle set in what promises to be a show of epic proportions. ++++++++ ☞ Tuscan Whale ☞ Rize ☞ JMD ________________ ☝︎ THE ASSEMBLY HALL ☝︎ With Suff Daddy & Handpicked Cassette Tapes With the release of his latest album ‘Bird Songs’ dropping on one of our favourite record labels of the moment, Jakarta, Suff Daddy has solidified his ability to saunter the line between real raw boom bap and soulful subtleties, enlisting vocal artists such as Mayer Hawthorne and Miles Bonny to collaborate on his all original productions.  The seminal Suff Sells is still on heavy rotation down at Handpicked HQ, as is his contribution to Melting Pot Music’s Hi-Hat Club series, and if past releases Blunts With My Crew, Sympathy for The Liquor and The Gin Diaries are anything to go by, Big Papa Suff is going to appreciate Glasgow City as much as we will his selection. ++++++++ ☞ Slipmat Brothers/Jazz Spastiks ☞ Bessa ☞ TUNER ☞ Sultan ________________

APRIL ROUND-UP
APRIL ROUND-UP
With Summer right around the corner everyone is starting to snap out of hibernation mode. Camping trips, barbecues and cider in the sunshine replace watching endless TV series on Netflix and ordering takeaway from Deliveroo only to get stressed that it's 15 minutes late because the driver probably stopped off for a single. However, we have a couple of months left of Glasgow parties in store before we break into festival mode though. Here's what is coming up in April: 08.04.16 - In Two Minds : Session 3 w/ She Bang Rave Unit X Frogbeats @ Mango, Glasgow, 11pm - 3am, £5 otd Powered by the 527 and Samson Sounds systems
Our new series of club nights based at Mango on Sauchiehall Street have gotten off to a fine start. The first two sessions in March saw residents 527 join us for the launch night and Tribal Pulse bring their own brand of hypnotic psychedelic techno to the melting pot. The vibe has been set and you can now find us fortnightly (until the 20th of May) playing alongside some quality crews we've come across at Scotland's wee festivals. Cosy vibes, quality sound systems, familiar faces and good tunes. We've got the weekend sorted, mate.
Joining us for Session 3 are the brilliantly bonkers She-Bang Rave Unit making their Glasgow debut. Perhaps one of Edinburgh's best kept secrets, this all-female collective are seasoned clubbers united by a mutual love of Detroit techno, house and electro. The Guardian touted the group as one of their 'Top 5 Acts to See at New Year' and their quirky, upbeat sets of party/ghetto techno, old classics and rare gems are guaranteed floor-fillers. If their live mix from Audio Soup festival last year is anything to go by, this one is going to be MESSY.
15.04.16 - Fools Disco (Intersound X Frogbeats) w/ The Many Merry Men @ SWG3, Glasgow, 10pm-2am, £5 otd*
The 'Fools Disco' is another brand spanking new club night we're getting on the go with local outfit Intersound. The nights co-founder and resident Pete Tolhurst promises this to be an "up-beat, funky collaboration with fun being the main objective." 'The Many Merry Men' - consisting of Tolhurst (Intersound), Sombadi, Estir (Intersound) and Mundisco (Intersound) - will be making their debut under the moniker. The group are not new to this, however, having played together at many-an-after-party, Inn Deep and our 4th birthday bash at Mango back in December. A finely tuned machine ready to roll out the funky fresh floor-fillers, world-beats and intoxicating house and disco rhythms. You'd be a fool to miss it. Or if you go? *As Intersound is a charity night proceeds from this event will be going to the chosen charity, Scottish Association for Mental Health (SAMH). 22.04.16 - In Two Minds : Session 4 w/ Unity Sessions Takeover @ Mango, Glasgow, 10pm-3am, £5 otd
For Session 4 we hand the reigns over to the trusted hands of Unity Sessions. The lively music and arts collective from Cumbria have been tearing up the underground scene of the North West of England with their beauty of a sound system in tow. They will be bringing their rig up north of the border for their highly anticipated Glasgow. Expect a healthy good mash up of bass, garage, afro-beat, jungle and dnb. This mix by their resident DJ Zom-B ought to get your juices flowing.
30.04.16 - Deoch an Dorus Festival (SOLD OUT) @ Isle of Arran, Sat-Sun, £20 + Travel
And last but not least, the Scottish festival season OFFICIALLY KICKS OFF (YAAAAAAS!). After a successful launch last Summer on the idyllic setting of the Isle of Arran, Deoch an Dorus is back with a new (but just as beautiful) location and even more formidable line-up. We will be joining the likes of Samson Sounds, The Girobabies, Colonel Mustard & The Dijon 5, Sweet Aerobics and many more acts for a dram and a dance. A humble wee festival with an intimate crowd, it really is an ideal way to start off the Summer. The event is currently sold out, but if you keep an eye on the Facebook event page nearer the time you might get lucky. See you on the dancefloor!
