Into the Breach! Storyboarding PACIFIC RIM
Along with working on concept for Guillermo del Toro’s PACIFIC RIM (you can read about my kaiju designs for Otachi and Slattern here) and some prop work, I also worked on storyboarding the film with Rob McCallum, Francisco Ruiz Velasco and Raúl Monge. Below are a few sample pages to some of the sequences did.
After we were done with most of the concept work, Francisco Ruiz Velasco and myself stayed on to help storyboard artist Rob McCallum with the final sequence to the film and rework changes to earlier sequences after Rob left.
For the breach sequence at the film’s finale, I did tighter color boards to also work out the concept of the “Throat” which led to the Anteverse. More Pacific Rim storyboards in a future post!

An Otachi evolution ~ making a PACIFIC RIM kaiju!
This week Guillermo del Toro’s PACIFIC RIM came out on DVD/Blu-Ray, so now you can have kaiju alerts anytime you want! I had a great time getting to be part of Guillermo’s core concept team along with designing some of the film’s kaiju, Otachi and Slattern! Here’s a look at some of the early concept I did for Otachi and the evolution of the kaiju from sketch to screen.
All the kaiju designs I did started out with a blank piece of paper and few ideas for forms and character. Above (top), is the first quick sketch for a possible kaiju that would become “Otachi”, based loosely on a crawling bat with the twin blade horns inspired by the prehistoric skull of a Brontotherium. Guillermo liked the direction of that form and I worked it up to a cleaner design (center), fleshing out the details and character. With Guillermo’s input we worked up the bottom design, getting rid of her multiple side eyes and adding the glowing “eye spots” to the front of the horns and split chisel lower jaw. The hammer tail in the early drawings also became a snake like spear.
After that, the next pass at the designs tightened all those ideas into the final concept drawings above.
Guillermo also wanted the kaiju to have 2 silhouettes, standing and crawling so a rearing Otachi was also worked out (above). Along with a flying pose with her wings extended (below).
The final details of Otachi’s head were also tightened, but the tendons connecting her jaws were dropped in the final model.
Once all these concepts were finalized and Guillermo approved, the drawings were passed to concept artist Francisco Ruiz Velasco who did a final rendered painting of the design and fleshed out more details like the glowing spots along her neck. Otachi’s attacking tail was also added in Francisco’s pass at the character, taken from the unused kaiju “Meathead”, an earlier character that I designed with concept sculptor Simon Lee.
From there the designs and rendering were given to concept artist/ sculptor David Meng who created the final maquette that brought everything together into the final Otachi that would end up in the film! And I’ll admit it’s still a big thrill to see her come to life on the screen. You can check out more of the all the concept that went into making the film with the official art book “PACIFIC RIM: MAN, MACHINES and MONSTERS”. And be sure to check out all the featurettes and extras included in the new PACIFIC RIM DVD release!

So here's an interesting little detail in Pacific Rim: A lot of the people in the Bone Slums/Exclusion Zone are wearing face masks that are stained blue. Here's some pictures from the film (again, thanks movie-screencaps.com!), brightened to make it easier to see:
So what's up with that? Pacific Rim: Man, Machines, & Monsters has the answer:
During pre-production Costume Designer Kate Hawley sent Production Designer Andrew Neskoromny a photo of an Asian factory where indigo fabric was being dyed. "Everything gets stained," recalls Neskoromny. "People's clothes, their fingers, their nails, just everything. I said, 'Oh yeah, that looks great. We've got to do a bit of that.'" Hawley took the idea even further. "The idea is that the blue blood has got into people's bodies," she says. "and you can see bits of blue coming through their breathing masks, like a little subtle poison."
It's an interesting touch - and it's one that leaves me with some questions. Other sources have it that kaiju blue is so potent that it can dissolve sidewalks, and based on that information you'd kinda expect people who'd inhaled enough kaiju blue for it to show up on their masks to be a lot worse off than these fairly healthy-looking people. So do the toxins in kaiju blue break down relatively quickly? Or does Hannibal Chau have an effective treatment? Or maybe even the local kaiju church? Or is it something else?

Odd question, but where did you get the best for your Hermann Gottlieb cosplay? I’ve been searching for accurate ones for ages…
Heya! It took me forever to finally track down, but it is a vintage K-Mart sweater vest from the 80s or 90s. You might find one in a vintage shop or Poshmark.
The brand is Hemingway Point. It comes in a few colorways, in a button up vest, a pullover vest, and a full sweater. Good luck!
Here is the saga of me finding it:
Alas, a recently sold one on Poshmark

Watching Pacific Rim and I just love how Newt has zero survival skills. Kaiju tongue coming directly for him? Just stands there. Baby kaiju just ate a guy and is coming towards him next? Curls up in a little ball. This man would not survive a day in the wild
