".. This is gonna be an odd question, how does snow feel?" he asks, and ordinarily- it would be an odd question. But on closer inspection, the snow that falls around him melts before it reaches skin and the snow underneath his bare feet melts with every step he takes. ... yeah he's being serious. (Hope this is okay!)

grusha looks over to him, gaze narrowing as the gym leader's quick to notice their state of undress. automatically, a quip of going back in and dressing up appropriately was at his tongue, but he did not say it aloud. not as he daws up to their eyes.

so, he considers the question seriously, letting out a puff of mist.

' when you first step onto them, it's shocking rock candy, like tiny sparks. then you get used to it. the flavor's gone, but the cold stays. the unforgiving winter weighs down, slowing your movements, placing a drain on your energy as it zaps everything from you. '

' then, when you least expect it, the winds change. the snow becomes no different than the pavement when it barrels its way into you.'

' ... ... snow takes its beauty from its surroundings to let down your guard, so you shouldn't let down your guard around it. not even for a few flakes. head back inside. '

tw: injury

if it isn't already hinted in a previous post, grusha had suffered an incomplete spinal cord injury which is what caused him to leave his former life as a snowboarder. though it still allows him to walk, he does get terrible sensations at his legs and gives the impression that he is quite frail.

however, publicly, it's only known that he had a leg injury.

as he had been an adult at the time, he has not informed his family about it, which has lead to a severe divide between him and his family.

sitting at the bench facing the edge of the mountain, grusha takes a sip of his tea. ( it's something he didn't quite appreciate when he was younger, but he does now. ) the thermos beside him lets out steam openly, gradually cooling, but his gaze fixes itself on the rising sun.

it's peaceful, enough he could hear past his own thoughts, and feel the settling of his own heart.

he'll find out what day it is later.

it's weird enough it's talking - it's easy enough to chock up as just having not eaten for some time, but he can't be hallucinating this badly, could he? did he need another check up? he can't be doing this badly.

it was frustrating, knowing his attack did nothing during the fight. frustrating more so to understand how selfish it was to believe such when he'd managed to make it out of there far better than others.

( such as a certain struggling professor lying in the hospital bed not too far from them. )

although altaria managed to shield away most of the damage, it wasn't enough to prevent the 'attack' of an 'aggravated' old injury, and he'd found himself stuck in the hospital as well, much to his own annoyance, only at the persistence of his equally exhausted partner.

how lucky for him to be brought to the very same doctor as before.

' you're hanging on a thread, grusha. ' ' you know what'll happen if you don't take care of your spine. '

he glared out the window, annoyed and in pain, but alive.

the icy gym leader just gives the kid a once look over. to him, they looked like a mess. all the snow wasn't the problem. it's the aftermath, and there's a fairly good fireplace ready to warm up a soon to be literally snot-nosed brat.

pulling his hand away, he gets back up on his feet.

it'd be a lie to say he couldn't relate, even if he attributes it more to his earlier days outside of paldea, back when he was a rookie snowboarder. taking more than a few calculated risks was fine, and well, saying something like 'then don't let them 'gas you up' sounded entirely plastic, something she's likely beating herself up over and over again. he knows the feeling all too well; she doesn't need him echoing the words.

" it ... happens."

he taps her on the shoulder with his knuckles lightly. though he doesn't smile, he has his gaze focused forward, towards the light, leading outside.

" looks like we'll both be in the dead pool rounds then. "

Her shoulders eased a bit at seeing just how perked up he was despite it, how much he looked like someone lit a fire under his ass and actually got him hyped up… It was strange, in a good way.

But then he turned it around on her, and she immediately cast her gaze to the floor, scratching the side of the neck. “I-… It still hurts to think about, but the battle was fun, I just feel bad that I got cocky and gambled when i shouldn’t have… I knew that Charizard was coming, and i was so focused on that and taking it out as quickly as possible that… I dunno, I feel awful about disappointing everyone who was gassing me up more then anything…”
