IT SNOWED OMG YOU GUYS. YOU GUYS. you guys it snowed :o
this week is the dragon wrap! its kinda the opposite of the scorpion wrap:
the latter is a sunset smash which goes under the anchor arm and over the lead...
while the former is a sunrise shot which goes over the anchor and under the lead.
because entering the dragon wrap requires you to start facing sunset, you need to turn around to execute the shot. you could stall the dart and switch to an upwards swing, but it would be faster to just do one of the many sunset-facing shots.
i don't love this move. it feels a lot slower and less reliable than the elbow shot i have available when i need to make a sunrise attack. definitely doesn't feel as cool as the scorpion shot. but i think it's growing on me.
troubleshooting:
entering the wrap: stretch your anchor hand way up high when catching the rope. its difficult to master that initial throw so that it comes down in the right spot.
the lead hand should still be in front of the anchor shoulder when you let go. this seems to give me control than bringing the hand all the way back for some reason.
don't release until you feel the rope go taut. timing can is very difficult with this shot but once you get the hang of it you can use this little tug as a reliable cue.
note about terminology: names for these moves are from the book Traditional and Modern Rope Dart by Frank Hatsis, which is what my teacher uses. Hatsisf bases these names on ancient literature where available, but there's hardly anything actually written down about the rope dart. even in ancient times it was a very rare weapon to come across.
this shot in particular was called "rolling dragon releases pearl" by Yao (according to Hatsis, anyway- i couldn't find the original source). the upwards underhand throw does remind me of rolling a pearl, i guess. don't really see where the dragon comes into all this. but whatever
I’m learning to spin light poi, and it’s really fun. You can hear me smack them against eachother at one point, which is extra proof that I’m kinda new to this. The song is I Been by Berhana, from the album Han. The entire album is fantastic.
