at the risk of sounding soft or weird or lame, this is an earnest hope i have:
the sinners don't beat the shit out of distorted!heathcliff. instead, they successfully talk him down.
he has spent a lifetime being dehumanized and internalizing it. and the sinners have joined in degrading him, cementing this further. attempting to reason with him even when he refuses to listen is an important gesture.
the reason why i want this is because of how heathcliff offers up the prospect of his own beating, only to feel abashed at the sinners' apparent enthusiasm and refuse to be an "emotional punching bag".
but even then, he offered his trust. i think the sinners need to earn it.

One thing its driving me crazy is how canto 6 seems to almost be a dark reflection (aha) of canto 4. The mirror, representing the countless possibilities of the world, and how you have the potential to reach them, and you don't need to envy your image in the mirror is what gives yi sang strength.
Meanwhile canto 6 comes up to heathcliff and says "alright, actually in all possible worlds, you are destined to bring suffering to the person you love and you cannot change this." His own existence is a curse that dooms catherine.

heathcliff has never had "anger management issues" like his profile says. it's been shown before but this canto is really driving it home. he actually does have the ability to recognize when he's getting upset, and tends to give a fair warning before he starts becoming violent. if his boundaries are not respected, of course he's going to retaliate.
the point where i realized he actually has a lot of gentleness in his heart that he's been keeping safely hidden away is the first scene where hindley and linton are insulting him in front of everyone.
if he really had "anger management problems" this conversation would not have happened. he would've been incapable of holding his temper back. heathcliff prioritizes catherine's well-being above his own, and is both emotionally mature enough and caring enough to not yell back at his abusers solely because he knows cathy doesn't like it. he doesn't actually snap until he hears that she's dead.
which brings me to my second point: when the mirror heathcliff finds out about her death, his first instinct is not to get aggressive with nelly—the bearer of bad news—but immediate self harm.
his problem is not anger management. never has been. it's deep, deep self-hatred.

This is also sorta kinda on my sideblog (the one I use for when I'm shadowbanned) but once again pointing this out.
This is Faust when her Telepole E.G.O Corrodes.
This is Don when her Telepole E.G.O Corrodes.
They're sort of similar, with the difference being the weapon that's staked through the wolf's body. Both of their own body is scorched except their hair, it's entirely black and otherwise identical to the scorched body on the original Abnormality.
But here's Heathcliff when his Telepole E.G.O Corrodes.
Not only does his own body appear less scorched and you can see his arm(s), his face is also visible (only the eyes are shadowed). The wolf that's used is very similar but it has the major difference that it clearly has a leash, while Faust and Don's Corrosion lack that particular aspect. Because it has the actual telepole staked through it (and at least three of them instead of just the one Heathcliff uses in the normal attack) instead of the user's weapon, it arguably resembles the Abnormality more.
And the main difference, even though there's only so much you can see in a short cutscene, is that during the attack, his arms move.
This is peculiar to me because most E.G.O Corrosions either follow the pattern that the Don and Faust examples show (only their hair is recognizably theirs) or just cover the user's body further (like Sinclair's Impending Day). To me this is some kind of weird form of Corrosion where at least some of the body and/or consciousness remains, and the leash to me suggests that someone is supposed to lead it but they're not there.
And it's very remarkable that the combination here is Heathcliff and Telepole, aka the Backstreets Watchdog.

Ah,, not sure if you've talked about it already, but what do you think of our manager's shift in demeanor? Namely, they seem to be talking less and being v up for leaving [H] to his fate. I've heard that DC!Dante went through an arc of slowly loosing any sense of compassion for the winners in hell, so I'm somewhat worried.
i think it's p understandable considering the canto? hindley is an asshole and dante has no reasons to sympathise with him with how he presented himself so far. previously dante cares when the npc are innocent n are decent people. hindley isn't at all and until we find out his lore in part two i don't see why dante wouldn't leave him be (and not getting tangled w the dangerous factions he irritated)
plus, they did look to heathcliff for the final decision and respected it when heathcliff said he won't leave hindley behind? its nice that they can sense the situation n delegate the important bits to the sinner in the spotlight
in divine comedy dante isn't really loosing the sense of compassion for the sinners in that way it's more of them coming to terms w them deserving their fate bc of the things they did + acceptance that they are merely a witness and passerby. in limbus maybe pre-clocked dante could be an ass but we'll have to see.
at the present moment i adore dante's character development - they're starting to grow into their backbone and i'm excited to see them going
