Festivids Submission Deadline Is Tomorrow!

Hello, Festividders! As the submission deadline draws near, some reminders:

Assignment vids are due on Sunday, January 14, 11:59 PM UTC. What time is that for me?

Note that if you claimed a pinch hit, it may have a different deadline noted in the original post or email.

You'll be able to make tweaks to your AO3 vid post between submitting it and the collection opening, but your vid should have a complete timeline when you submit, as well as any relevant tags or warnings. (In particular, we know that potential physical triggers are increasingly common in modern sources, so please do tag for physical triggers if your vid includes anything like strobe lights, bright lights, or "stuttery" cuts between 2-3 stills). If you're not sure, email us and we'll be happy to help.

Extensions: If you are unable to finish your vid by the deadline, but you're 99% sure that you'll be able to finish it before the collection opens, you can request an extension. Email us at festivids at gmail dot com and let us know what you need.

If you're not completely sure that you'll finish your vid by the time the collection opens, please let us know as soon as possible so that we can send your recipient out to pinch hit. You can still finish and post your vid, but that gives a possible pinch hitter as much time as possible to make a gift. And now there will be two vids for your recipient, which is awesome! It is okay to default at this point in the exchange - the only consequence is that you may have an earlier deadline next year.

Treats! If you're interested in making treats, you can submit them any time before the collection opens, which won't be any earlier than Saturday, February 3, 9:00 AM UTC.

If you'd like a walkthrough for submitting your vid to the collection, here's a step by step guide.

As well as the standard AO3 warnings and warnings for Physical Triggers, Festividders should, where applicable, warn for the following in the Additional Tags field or the Notes field:

Animal Harm; Auditory Triggers; Blackface/Brownface/Redface [use in all contexts]; Blood/Gore [significant amounts]; Depictions of Police; Holocaust and/or Nazi Imagery; Incest; Queerphobia [depictions of queerphobia/homophobia or queerphobic violence]; Racism [depictions of racism and/or racist violence]; Self-harm; Suicide; Transphobia [depictions of transphobia and/or transphobic violence].

Dear Festividder Letters

If you have a Dear Festividder letter, you can reply with it here so that your vidder or potential treat-makers can find it easily. We recommend that your comment include a list of the fandoms you requested as well as the username you used to sign up for Festivids on the AO3.

A Dear Festividder letter can give your assigned vidder more detail on your preferences, and also can make it easier for other vidders to make you a treat vid!

What's a Dear Festividder letter?

A Dear Festividder letter is a completely optional open letter that you may post to your Dreamwidth / Tumblr / blog / website / etc. In the letter, you can list the sources you requested, and give your vidder some suggestions about themes, characters, pairings, music choices, and so on. Please note that vidders are not obligated to follow these suggestions; vidders are completely free to make any vid they want within the assigned fandom, regardless of the details in your letter. However, many giftvidders may appreciate having some guidance about your preferences.

If you don't have a Dreamwidth / Tumblr / other blog where you can post your letter, you can either put the text of your letter in your comment on dreamwidth (where anon comments are allowed), or you can email the mods at festivids at gmail dot com with the text of your letter, and we'll post it somewhere for you.

Vidders, your assignment email may contain a link to your recipient's letter. If it does not, you may want to check this post or the dreamwidth crosspost for a letter from your recipient. Please remember that sometimes it takes people a while to write letters, so you should check back a couple of times if no letter appears right away.

We're nearly done reviewing the nominations! We have some more questions for you before we wrap up, starting with some clarification questions and moving to some bigger questions.

We have some clarification and disambiguation questions:

Dead Ringers (TV): Nominator, do you want the Rachel Weisz series, the British sketch show, or the Japanese TV movie?

Legend of Yunze and special / Legend of Yunze / Legend of Yunze [UMBRELLA]: We have three nominations for this source with different levels of specificity. Our inclination is to call the whole show, including the special, a single fandom (that is, to remove the umbrella tag) – although the special is set in a different time period, it appears to be part of the same continuity and is often vidded together. That would leave us with one nomination tag, 云泽传 | Legend of Yunze and Special (TV) [SAFETY], to include all parts of the fandom. Nominators, does this describe the way you think of the fandom? Is it what you were intending to nominate? Is there a reason we should have two separate tags?

Lord of the Rings Production Videos: Nominator, could you confirm whether you mean the dvd extras of the Peter Jackson Lord of the Rings trilogy, or whether you're intending to include anything outside that canon? (E.g. other behind the scenes footage, The Hobbit, etc.)

Much Ado About Nothing - Shakespeare: Nominator, do you intend this nomination to be a specific performance, or all performances, or performances and adaptations?

Power Play (TV): Nominator, are you looking for a 2020 RPG series with Rick Budd as gamemaster, a 1998 Canadian tv show about a hockey team, a 1999 TV movie about a con woman, a 1992 tv show about video games, or a 2009 political CTV series hosted by Evan Solomon?

Prehistoric Planet (TV): Nominator, are you looking for the 2022 show or the 2002 show?

Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants (2005): There is a sequel film, with the same cast and writer – should it be included in the fandom?

Skylines (2019): Nominator, do you mean the tv show about architecture or the tv show about hip-hop?

The Princess (2022): Nominator, do you mean the 2022 film about Princess Di or the 2022 fantasy film?

썸바디 | Somebody (TV): Nominator, do you mean the 2018 Korean reality dance show or the 2022 kdrama about murder based in part on American Psycho?

Tatort Saarbrücken (2020-present): If we're understanding this correctly, this is an anthology show with a number of locations and teams, and this nomination is asking for the episodes that are set in Saarbrücken, but just during the time period while Schürk and Hölzer are the commissioners. When we look at youtube, we do see that the locations are mostly vidded separately as their own shows, but the vidders are just calling the fandom "Tatort Saarbrücken." Is there a fandom reason to consider this a new show once Schürk and Hölzer show up?

We have some umbrella fandoms we need to consider the scope of:

BBC Nature Documentaries: This isn’t definitive in this form, since we’d have to pick whether a dinosaur documentary or a medical documentary counted as a nature documentary. We could do "BBC Earth Documentaries in the Category 'Nature,'" (to see the list, go to the BBC Earth list of shows and select nature in the subject field). If that's not what you're looking for, please feel free to propose a different definitive group of documentaries.

Dinosaur Documentaries: This isn't definitive in this form, but as above BBC Earth does have a section for dinosaur documentaries if you would like to narrow it down to "BBC Earth Documentaries in the Category 'Dinosaurs'> (to see the list, go to the BBC Earth list of shows and select dinosaurs in the subject field). If that's not what you're looking for, please feel free to propose a different definitive group of documentaries.

Space Documentaries: As above, this is not definitive enough.

Women in Hong Kong Martial Arts Films: This is not definitive enough; we could do the work of a specific director or studio, the films involving a specific fight director or martial arts director, or we could do an individual actor. (We refer to the Hong Kong movie database for questions about martial arts directors, if that list would be helpful.)

Women's 100m/200m/4x100m Track and Field RPF - 2016-2023: Nominator, could you explain why this fandom is framed this way? We'd typically do a sport as either a team (Canadian Women's Track and Field Team) or as a year (High Jump Finals 2023 RPF). Is there a reason for this particular framing?

Dolly Parton movies-stage performance-music videos: Nominator, could you explain why this fandom is framed this way? We'd typically frame this either as one medium ("Dolly Parton films"), or all media ("Dolly Parton works"), or as an RPF fandom that would include interviews. Is there a fandom reason to include films and stage performances, but not TV shows?

We have some factual questions we can't answer, but maybe you can!

Danny Elfman at Coachella 2022: The Coachella schedule shows this as 15 minute set, performed once. Does anyone know whether it's exactly 15:00, or whether it's shorter or longer? It looks like it was just recorded once (professionally), and other recordings might be fancams?

The Flight of the Hero (TV 1968): We can't find the runtime of this series anywhere, and the only version of it that we can find is on a rare DVD so we can't check it. Does anyone have access to a copy of this canon? And if so, how long is it?

Kidnapped - National Theatre Scotland: We also can't find the runtime for this, or a version of it that is available online. Would a vidder be working from trailers/fancams, or is there a filmed version that we couldn't find?

Below the read more: a question about wrestling.

We have a broad question about wrestling and how it's nominated and vidded. Last year, All Elite Wrestling (AEW), the wrestling promotion org, was nominated and after some discussion we called it an Umbrella fandom. It was disqualified by over 150 vids that contained footage from AEW Dynamite, one of the tv shows AEW puts on.

However, thinking of this as an umbrella fandom made up of individual TV shows doesn't really make sense: nobody in the fandom is a fan of just "AEW Dynamite" specifically, and they're not vidding "AEW Dynamite," they're vidding a specific wrestler ("Britt Baker AEW") or a rivalry ("Jon Moxley vs Bryan Danielson") or the whole AEW as a hype mix. (Wrestlers also sign with multiple different orgs over the course of their careers, so the same wrestler may be in four organizations, two tag team teams, and a stable of players who are aligned but not always working together.)

This is relevant again this year: Ring of Honor (ROH, another wrestling promotion org) was nominated as an umbrella. ROH is like AEW: it has different tv shows, but the shows don't organize the fandom, wrestlers and teams do. Also, the ROH championship fights are fought at AEW events. And a different AEW show was also nominated; it's probably ineligible based on a quick glance, but even if there are 150 vids for it nobody is really vidding "AEW Collision" – they're vidding wrestlers who happened to fight on AEW Collision this week and AEW Dynamite last year and New Japan Pro Wrestling before that.

Here's our wrestling fandom proposal: wrestling fandom is organized around individuals or teams and should be nominated as individuals or teams, basically ignoring specific wrestling shows. A wrestling nomination could be:

Britt Baker (wrestler): a specific wrestler, and we'd look for vids for Britt Baker

The Young Bucks (wrestling): a wrestling team

The Elite (stable): a larger group of wrestlers of who share common storylines/motives/adversaries and have a leader; the Elite includes The Young Bucks

New Japan Pro-Wrestling (promotional organization) [UMBRELLA]: an umbrella fandom for a promotion organization that includes under the umbrella multiple wrestlers and teams and stables

New Japan Pro-Wrestling Women's Division [UMBRELLA]: an umbrella fandom for the women's division of the promotional organization that includes under the umbrella multiple wrestlers and teams and stables

If this sounds correct: wrestling nominators, would you like to reframe your nominations to fit this format? Sorry for the misleading information prior to this years' nominations, but hopefully this will make it possible for wrestling nominations to be eligible and not disqualified by a few big names.
