“No worries dude, I’m good.” he insisted, not as good as he said he was. Mao Mao’s claws HURT like heck!

Badgerclops listened to him start his heroic tirade with a smile, happy that he was at least feeling better enough to get back to the old shtick.

He had to say he was derailed just as easily, snickering at the look on Mao Mao’s face. Really? He was going to focus on that?

“Uhhh, because that’s what happened? We held hands? Do youuuu not know what hand-holding is, dude?” Badgerclops teased, sticking a smiley face bandaid on his friend’s forehead. 

Mao Mao remained unfazed by the initial reassurance. He knew darn well how sharp those babies were! Even while gloved, the Mao Clan were famous (and equally infamous) for not only their deadly precision in battle, but also their claws of steel. 

As such, they almost never fought with them. Only in a last resort would a Mao ever turn to tooth and nail simply out of a basic show of common decency. And the fact that he’d accidentally hurt his friend in such a manner stung worse than the platypus venom ever could.

Even still, most of that had easily, far too easily, been overshadowed by the- um. The- 

The PERFECTLY NORMAL hand holding. BADGERCLOPS had been the one to make it weird! Naturally! Of course! 

“Don’t be ridiculous!” he was eager to snap back in typical fashion. “It’s not like we haven’t held hands before, i-it’s FINE! D-Don’t even make a huge stink about it, it’s perfectly-” 

A bandaid being pressed to his forehead cut him off mid-sentence; eyes going wide as he tried, and failed, to glance up at his new “accessory”. 

“...” 

“.   .   .”

“Yeah, well, thanks for the anti-venom, Badgerclops, but I think I’m gonna be getting up, now. Things to do, places to be, people to arrest-” 

 Oh, if only it could have been that easy. Before his deadpanning was even done, Mao felt his leg cramp back up at the slightest hint of movement. Despite himself, he winced and had to let it be. Lest the pain worsened, again. 

. . . Great.

“Why are you asking meeEEEEEEE-”

Badgerclops felt tears prick his eyes at the death grip + claws burying themselves in his hand. He tried to keep a steady hand, silently screaming like a tea kettle ready to be taken off the stove-top.

Luckily for the hero, the shot didn’t take very long, and was over as soon as it started. Badgerclops placed a band-aid with smiley faces on Mao Mao’s leg afterwards.

He also gave himself one on his face because they looked cute.

“See? That was nothing. You should be feelin’ better soon, then we can like. Detain that platypus and get them to maybe not inject venom into people?”

He glanced down at his paw when he felt it burning. “Dang dude, that was some extreme hand holding.”

Mao Mao only fully processed just how hard he was grabbing on at the sound of Badgerclops’ distress. He was quick to let go; letting the couch take the brunt of his pain and frustration. 

Cripes, that stings! More than he’d been expecting it to! His own initial response seemed like, no, felt like an exaggeration on his end, but he certainly wouldn’t have blamed anyone else for taking the administer badly. 

He resisted the urge to try moving his leg around. As much as he wanted to be up and back in action as soon as physically possible, he knew he wouldn’t be able to do much without at least a good minute or two of rest. 

“I-I’m sorry, Badgerclops,” he sighed. He was going to say more, but he started as he gazed down at the.. childish band-aid now stuck to his fur. 

“... Right-” He ended up doing a double-take when he looked back up to his friend. 

Mao Mao tried his best not to smile. Too much. 

A cough. Back to business.

“Well, I mean- yes! While it is a wild animal, that just gives us all the more reason not to let it roam freely about the town! Something strong enough to take ME down MUST be stopped!” 

The sheriff pounded a fist into another as if to emphasize his point; voice low and authoritative. By his blade, would he smite that foul fiend if it’s the last thing he did! 

“U-Uh-” He felt his face go hot as he was briefly derailed, eyes darting down to Badgerclops’ hand before looking away just as quickly. 

“Don’t... Wh-Why’d you have to- word it like that-” 

Yep. Legendary hero. That’s him. His ancestors must be so thrilled that their lineage has come this far.

“Pure Heart Valley? Huh, I like the name of the place! Never met a sherriff though, firsst time for everything.” Shaking his hand, grinning. “I’m Soldan, a pleassure to meet Mao Mao!” Hands now resting behind her back lazily, balancing on her heels for a moment. Prince lazily looked around, half asleep with part of his tongue poking out without notice. “Ah! I do have to assk, what iss there to do here? I want to know the area more, but I take my time trying different experiencess…russhing anything givess me a headache.”

Truth be told, Mao Mao wasn’t used to greeting newcomers. Not like this. 

Typically there was always some sort of nefarious plot afoot. Old friends turned foes- some scheming tricksters arriving to con all they can out of innocent sweetie-pies; THOSE were the norm, around here! And although this “Soldan” SEEMED friendly enough, he would do best to keep an eye on her. 

““To do”?” he repeated without giving it much thought. “Uhhh-” 

An outsider with an unknown origin knowing everything there is to know about the valley- about the town- was a bad idea. Clearly he had to lie; and fast! 

... Buuut, on the other hand, it was just sightseeing spots. And they had.. literally JUST met. Right now. At this very second. 

... Geeze, maybe Badgerclops had been right about him needing to relax, more. 

“W-Well, there’s uh- plenty to do, if you’re.. looking around for it? I, um-” He paused to clear his throat. 

“Sorry. I’m.. actually not used to.. being the one to welcome travelers and.. show them around. I protect the valley, not... advertise it.” 

“But, if you want, I could.. give you a quick tour of the town so you could see for yourself?”

The shock that he really should’ve worn out of, by now. Living in this village, he should be more than used to requests to hug and pet him and- u GH, it’s just SO disrespectful! 

“N-No! No, you may not!” He paused to grind his teeth together for a moment. “Please. Do not- touch me. At all.” 

Geeze, that should have to go without saying! The nerve of- oh, well, he supposes he can’t judge too harshly, yeah. 

But STILL! 

“Look, just- a-are ‘ya lost, kid?” he repeats, trying to shove down his irritation. “Do you know where your folks are at?”

Mao Mao quirked a brow, briefly casting his gaze towards said cobra before hesitantly taking a step back. He had nothing against snakes, of course, and he hadn’t meant to be rude! It just- 

Ugh, he’s such a prick. It’s just a regular snake! Get it together, Mao. 

“Uh huh?” he nearly scoffed, offering a polite smile. “A traveler, you say? Well, then, uh- a-allow me to formally introduce you to Pure Heart Valley!” 

He extends a gloved hand for a handshake, occasionally peeking back at “Prince” every now and then. Stop it. Stop looking at the snake- YOU STOP THAT RIGHT NOW

“I’m the sheriff of these parts. Call me Mao Mao!”
