tutorial with ciaran: getting a new perspective.
I found this tutorial quite reassuring for where I'm at. the main thing is focusing on the exploration and finding something that will work that can then be applied into my design.
outcome to consider:
I explained the idea I was already doing with the categories being in three separate books. ciaran thought of a more impactful way of proving the quote wrong from the idea I already had which was a case box that has a book dedicated to each killer. having the quote on top and then looking down the stack gives a bold response that would create a almost shock and realisation from the viewers.
considering the time left, this my be something I consider for the grad show rather than the deadline. especially with what we discussed — all the books being hard backs to bulk it up and create a securer structure.
I think making the case box in the time could be done, but the only thing to think about is how it will be finished since we discussed the quote on top and then, for example, my rant/reflection on why it is that they aren't as recognised using what i've learnt from my research on the side. so if I want to move forward with the case box I'd have to get on with it asap, since I'll have to explore possible ways I could do it. whether it's clothbound or wrapped with a printed cover instead. if not — for the deadline a mockup could suffice.
the hardback for the individual books for this deadline could be done with thicker paper covers instead to maintain structure within the box. what we considered for the cover would be that I use the symbols of each category for the front covers and then the spine would have their names adding to the impactful image of then all stacked.
discussed next steps for next week:
continue experimenting and building up to final designs.
have definitive compositions that I can start applying my other content into their own books.
sort case box.
have an order and a set amount of pages, making all books equal.
test printing and paper samples!!!!

mp – experimenting.
considering body copy sizes and trying text wrapping.
I layed out some sizes for body copy and slightly bigger choices that I could possibly consider for a secondary body copy. this is for an a4 size book which I'm not 100% set on, but I haven't done a editorial bigger than a5 before so I wanted to explore a bigger format to consider. test printing the choices, I chose 8 pt for the standard body copy and 18 pt for the secondary body copy.
the two different sizes will allow me to play with hierarchy, I did this for my mini major project in second year for my form follows function book. it used smaller body copy for extra information or more details, and the bigger text was for highlights within the existing content I used. I think it was really successful for that project so I wanted to come back to it and use it in a similar way with my improved style.
I've seen text wrapping quite a lot and have always wanted to try it, which I will definitely have to keep playing with since it has to make sense. the imagery has to relate to the text around it. above it has only been placed to figure out how text wrapping works.

mp – experimenting.
experimenting with imagery.
I started off by doing what I did before — adding threshold and a gradient map with grain to create the duo-tone effect.
after playing around little I had turned the white to an almost black and reversed the gradient map to create this creepier look which created a sort of mask to the killers. this is where I wondered if this gave in to how they hoped to be perceived–feared, etc.
because I thought of this I wanted to apply it into a spread that would possibly be near the start of the books. this was just something I threw together quickly, and I decided not to continue any of this since it didn't fit my style. I'd also see this becoming something I'd look back on and not be proud of. again this was more of an experiment, so i'm going to keep exploring styles that work similarly with mine but is something new.
this is a cover idea I started which used a similar process as the other images. I think it looks cool, again it's not my style as much, but I think the spiders could be applied in other ways.

these examples consider how I hope to play with layout and compositions with my piece. since I'm leaning more towards a zine this allows me to push something more visually exciting, epically how that can be considered with the amount of body content I'll have.

mp – content pt.5.
for each category I wanted to try and have at least one profile that didn't use poison, showing that not all of them use the same method to kill for the same motivation. such as instead of a black widow using poison she uses strangulation etc. but i've also kept so that poison is shown to be the most used method amongst the angels of death and black widows.
I also had to think of imagery, a couple cases have a lack of imagery which was hard to resolve or they'd be really bad quality. it's also because of dates, obviously the older cases are going to have lack of imagery because of the times. it's quite hard sourcing newer female serial killers as there's not sites like murderpedia that have a large amount of detail about cases, but murderpedia also hasn't been updated since 2017.
I think that can be considered though — as if there were issues etc.

mp – 16/04 tutorial.
since i've been focused on getting istd done for the past few weeks it was inevitable that I fell behind on progressing my fmp more than I was expecting, so this tutorial was talking about where I was at and making a definitive plan for what they are wanting to see by next tuesday and wednesday.
I needed this chat as it put into perspective the time that's left for me to get something I can be proud of at the end of the project.
what we outlined I needed to have for next week:
content – need content nailed down for each female serial killer I am including as well as the factual proof that proves the "there are no female serial killers" quote wrong.
experiments – lots and lots of experiments of layouts, imagery, type. once I have my content this will help how I can create my layouts. what also helps is that I have been in an editorial headspace because of istd so using all that i've learnt from doing istd should push these experiments further.
a running order for each book/zine – with the content and the experiments I will be able to start working out an order for what I hope the narrative to achieve.
other feedback:
creating more of a zine than a book fits to the topic since people may not want to properly read a book about female serial killers, but they would rather see and read something that follows a more visual exciting path.
it would make it less of a difficult and upsetting topic rather than an interesting exploration piece.
considering an extension – would be something to start thinking about after next week, but to let them know sooner rather later.

considering narrative after tutorial:
it was suggested I bring back and make it more of a vocal point in my project, the "there are no female serial killers" quote. that underpins my whole reasoning for representing female serial killers in this project, and the fact that misogyny is also found in the context of murder.
I think this would be easy to apply to the start of each book that would lead into cases and facts that will prove it wrong.

mp – types of books.
considering the type of book collection I want to make:
I think keeping each book not too long, like in the format of zine, will also double to be visually interesting across all three books.
it would also allow for a reasonable amount of information that wouldn't be more than the visual elements. since zines are very much visual, it would push me to consider my imagery more, using that to compliment the narrative.
finally, considering the fact zines are not meant to be extremely long like a traditional book–this would challenge me to consider composition more, having to think about a restricted amount of pages and how I can make my style fit with it.
