“you’re gonna get sick.”

akaashi sighed as he watched you under the safe cover of the gym roof. it’s much warmer here, at least warmer than it was out there.

“keiji!” you cried out. “it’s snowing!”

“i’m well aware,” he nods. “that’s why you should come here.”

"nonsense!” you exclaimed turning to him. “it’s the first snow of the season!”

“i’m well aware,” he repeats. “and if you stay out there any longer you’ll catch a cold.”

but you only ignore his comments. “so what?” you counter. “if i get a cold then it’ll be totally worth it.”

“no it won’t,” he sighs rubbing his temple, “i’ll have to take care of you if you are.” he adds.

“did you say something?”

and he only mumbles, “no,” before he watches you simply shrug and go back to the snow. the boy winced when he saw you slip and fall into the soft snow, realizing that you were only wearing a thin jacket. but despite this you simply sat up, laughing as snow continued to fall around you. he only shakes his head at your actions but he can’t hide the grin that grew on his lips.

“isn’t it pretty?” you smile.

yet akaashi could only think about how beautiful you looked in the snow.

stray snowflakes sat in your hair as you turned back to him. there’s a bright smile on your lips, one that made his heart race as you reached a hand out, offering once more. “come join me!”

and who would he be to refuse?

pairing: tobio kageyama x gn!reader

a/n: my work for fae's "mistletoe kisses" haikyuu writing collab! thank you to @faetarou for hosting this christmas event. please check out the other talented writers' pieces! i went skating the other day (my butt hurts) and kageyama is my number one, ofc i had to write him <3

frosty air, cheerful laughter, bright colourful lights, and a humongous spruce tree in the middle of the rink; all things to accentuate the evident holiday spirit lingering in the air. children run past you and dash towards the fluffy piles of snow, loud squeals of delight ringing in your ears.

you walk hand in hand with tobio, the boy who everyone knew as karasuno's remarkable setter, the boy who was nicknamed: king of the court, and for more reasons than one. but you knew him as the boy who became your lover some months prior from today. it's been a while since i've gone skating, he told you, i'd like to go, go with you one day. and the others.. thus it was set; in celebration of the holidays off school and kageyama's reminiscences of skating, you two and the rest of the karasuno volleyball team decided to get together for a evening of fun. already have made your way from shopping and drinks, the ice rink was your guys' last stop for the day.

everyone adorned their own winter jackets and fluffy hats and mittens to keep them warm. as for you, you're wearing a soft homemade beanie that tobio's sister, miwa, had gifted you.

"aw yeah dude!" nishinoya calls out while flailing his arms around, "time to skate with ma boys!" he cackles loudly in the front of the group, tanaka tagging closely behind him. you can hear daichi yell at them to slow down, something along the lines of "stay close you two, you're gonna get lost!" hinata cheers and jumps along happily, ignoring his captain's order. with a groan from daichi and a shrill cackle from sugawara, the trio pose together like complete losers, but you laugh at their antics anyway.

"don't get ahead of yourself my friends, your upperclassmen will teach you how it's done!" tanaka smirks with a ferocious sense of pride; you could almost swear you saw his chest puff out too. noya snickers in agreement.

"i suggest you first teach yourselves how to stay humble." tsukishima retorts with a click of his tongue, "what nusances, let's go set up tadashi. anyone else?" daichi nods, and asahi agrees.

"i'll help too!" sugawara offers, before him and the rest of the crew make their way over to an empty bench to place their bags and belongings.

you exhale, a clear smoke of air visible to both you and kageyama. your grip on his hand tightens, he squeezes back. "you ready, tobio?" looking up to his blueberry eyes, he huffs. a cute pout resting on his lips as he avoided your eyes- something's up. you tilt your head curiously, "what's wrong hm?"

"no, nothing's wrong! i just, um," his eyes avert yours, as he gazes up at the tall tree looming over you two. kageyama was a man who didn't, particularly excel, at expressing his thoughts verbally. sometimes he came off a bit harsh, or even gave the wrong message. at this point in his life, he'd lost count of how many times a misunderstanding has occured simply due to his incompetance to just say what he wanted to. but as he looked back at you, with your patient eyes and comforting stare, kageyama felt like all the missing pieces in his mind suddenly fit together.

"i- i'm just really glad. i'm really glad that we can spend time together here—with the team too of course, yeah, um i can't forget the team obviously—" he stutters, and you laugh. "but i'm really really glad to be here with you." he exhales, "thank you y/n."

every time kageyama felt nervous, he'd squeezed your hand as a sign of consolation; he's squeezing it right now. and every time you felt that squeeze, you would lean over to give him a sweet kiss on the cheek; and that's exactly what you did.

"tobio," you coo, "i'm incredibly happy that we can as well, you don't know how long i've been waiting for a day like this." you release your hold on him to pat down his hair, which has been tossled and messed around by the winds of the night. kagayama grins eye to eye at your actions— god, he is such a baby.

out of the blue, someone interrupts your guys' precious moment: hinata. "okay lovebirds stop being all kissy-wissy it's making me puke! time is up, so get your butts on the rink!!" kageyama freezes and you can almost see the fume coming out of his ears, and did his eyes turn red?

you barely have time to process anything before he starts running after them while yelling out profanities and curses. giggling at the boy's antics, you make your way onto the rink.

a half hour or so in, the boys continue to show endless cheer and enthusiasm. sugawara cheers in delight, as he devilishly pushes asahi around the rink (despite his protests) with daichi following side by side to film the two with a goofy grin. "push faster!" he whoops with a fist in the air.

tsukishima and yamaguchi skate side by side, yamaguchi takes photos of the beautiful sites and his friends around him while tsukishima shivers and complains that "my god, it is so damn cold." you can see he's enjoying himself though, despite his comments and red ears, tsukishima's smile is as present as ever.

his smile fades when nishinoya dashes by with expertise stokes of his feet, "don't be whiny tsukipoo! it's winter, of course it's gonna be cold!"

"please don't ever call me that again."

"WHATEVER TSUKIPOO-POO!" he shouts louder as he gets farther and farther away.

cruising together in the center were you and kageyama, hand in hand, as you synchronize your movements to match. '1-2, 1-2, 1-2' you count in your head, still getting used to the unfamiliar surface. next to your boyfriend though, you looked like a goose walking with three legs.

"you're pretty good at this, hm tobio?" you ponder out loud.

"hm?" he hums, "oh, yeah— my grandfather and miwa took me ice skating a lot when i was younger. though she's the one who liked to go often, so i followed her around." he smiles down at you, "you're not too shabby yourself."

with flushed smiles, you and him speed up. laughter and screams filled the atmosphere between you two as kageyama twirled you around— 'you look amazing like this' he thought. your bright smile and loud cheer was all he needed to feel that burst of warmth flow through him. is this what christmas could really feel like? that tingly feeling that makes his heart beat a little quicker? or the hot burn on his cheeks despite the frigid air nipping at his skin? his knees feel a little jelly-like, in spite of his proper form and balance. then there's that odd feeling surfacing his stomach and it makes it way up his throat—'am i in love?'

lost in his thoughts, you lose your balance through another spin, but with gratitude to kageyama's quick reaction speed, he catches you with an extended arm around your waist and pulls you in tight to his body.

"that was terrifying," you laugh up at him, "thanks for saving my butt."

"i love you."

one second. two seconds. three. "h-huh?" you thought you misheard.

"i love you y/n."

oh, you heard correctly alright. it only dawned on you now that your boyfriend hasn't said those three words to you before; and although he hasn't, he never failed to express them through his actions. the way he bought you your favourite drink from the vending machine- never forgetting it since the first time you told him. or the way he shyly complimented your outfit at times saying "is that a new top? it.. looks nice on you." and the way he always knew what you needed when your face was gloomy: one of his tight, loving hugs. his hold on you was more than enough for you to release your stress and melt into his arms.

you were stunned. tobio kageyama loved you— loves you. you straighten yourself, only now realizing that you were more or less leaning onto his body for support. you inhale a deep breath and exhale only to realize that he's still so damn close to you. with two hands on his chest and a gaze that could only prove you reciprocate, you whisper to him: "i love you too, tobio."

under the festive lights and in the center of the holiday chaos, you and tobio kageyama, are in love.

bonus: daichi, still filming the crazed duo, has his eyes linger around the rink until they land on you two. he thought you two looked like a scene of a cliche christmas rom-com he pans the camera over.

"heh, wait till sugawara sees this."
