The aromantic agenda is a good one.
Go and think about what kinds of relationships you want. Don't think about labels like romantic or platonic or sexual, think purely about what relationships would make you happiest.
When I realized I was aromantic, I was asked things like "Would you still date? Would you have a QPR? Will you ever kiss?"
But the aromantic community didn't ask that. Instead, they focused on "What do you want in a world where anything is possible?"
And I realized I want to be alone, surrounded by friends and family I love who are close enough, I can bring them fresh baked scones when I overbake.
They asked me "What do you want?" and the question was so broad, I could weigh labels in my hand like queerplatonic partner and nonpartnering and significant other. I could look at these and shrug and say, "What I want is to not worry about questions I don't care about." I could shelve these indefinitely. Maybe even forever. And just enjoy being myself.
The aromantic community celebrates exploration. Tells people asking if they are aromantic, "This is a personal decision. Your personal decision. If this label helps you, take it. If this community helps you, stay as long as you need. You don't have to be labelled anything, aromantic or otherwise, unless it would bring you comfort. You don't have to be anything you aren't."
It's a good community with good philosophies born from a unique experience, not rooted in missing out, but in being forced to consider what you want when you don't want what's expected.

You know maybe amatonormativity exists but it’s hard to say that when I’m 90% sure gay people were not being encouraged to seek out relationships by the wider culture until maybe 2005-ish

hey just a fucking psa because apparently i still need to say this in the year of our lord 2021
being aspec, whether you are arospec, acespec, or both, is NOT A BAD THING. being aspec is NOT A BAD ORIENTATION. you are a whole person who is FULLY capable of living a fulfilling life HOWEVER YOU WANT and if anyone says anything that tries to negate that then theyre not worth your fucking time
you dont “seem” aspec to other people? i dont give a shit!! “aspec” is not a set personality trait and no one has the right to tell you who you are
you “cant give as much” as allo people can? thats BULLSHIT you are SO capable and you can give as much or as little as youre comfortable with in ANY given situation
its “a shame” that you identify this way? there is NOTHING shameful about being and identifying as aspec
your identity is “too complicated”? tough shit!! they can do some research on their own! you are not nor ever will be obligated to have to teach willfully ignorant people anything about yourself or your experiences
your headcanons “dont make sense”? ANYONE can be aspec. anyone can be ANY orientation fictional or real and whoever says otherwise can take it and stick it. we deserve diverse rep, and we deserve rep PERIOD.
you are not broken. you are not a mistake. you are not a waste of space. you are not a burden. and you are not evil or bad for being aspec. you are beautiful you are loved and you deserve to be celebrated. and anyone who tries to take that away from you can fuck off. 🖤🤍💚💜

History (Part 3)
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
History, Part 3/3 - And here we are, friends 🐸🐸🥰!!! We’ve made it, yet again. I’m so glad I’m finally getting to share this part of the comic with you, it was what I wanted to say at the beginning of all of this 💚💚💚.
To answer my own question from a few weeks ago - what does it mean to be aro?
I think realizing you’re aro is an eye opening experience. It forces you to question amatonormative values that are saturated in society, makes you see what life can be without romance. There’s no precedent, because we exist in the gaps between the pages where everyone lives *happily ever after* (implied, obviously, in romantic love 🙄). It’s hard to tell what life will have in store for us, when our tales aren’t the ones that get told. Yet I’ve always liked to think that those gaps was where the ✨real magic ✨ happens. It’s like a blank canvas. Nothing is defined, so it gets to become whatever you want it to be. So being aro, to me, means opportunity, and freedom. The ability to choose what I want and don’t want in this life with as much honesty and sincerity as possible. On a grander scheme of things too, I think we, as a community, are going to get to decide how we want to define the meaning of our identities, too. It makes me excited. It makes me hopeful. Above all else, I’m looking forward to how much we have ahead of us 💚 – A huge thank you to everyone who volunteered to be drawn in this post (slides 2 and 6)!!! 🐸🐸🐸 it was nice to draw real people that aren’t, well, me for once😭😅 for real though, y’all are the best and this was a lot of fun! I hope I can do this again sometime!!! 💚💚 I’ve tagged everyone in the post, but here’s a list of their accounts as well 😄 @_pallavimvutharkar_ @beck.oh @i_am_hope_ @matilderdiogo @aspec_resources_research @river.stickz @astrini.adisoma @an.aroace.kat
[Image Description:
Slide 1: Celia speaks to the viewer with a small smile, “But … despite all of this, I think these are exciting times to be an aro”
Slide 2: “We are the first generation of explicitly aromantic people!”
Drawn around Celia are a number of other arospec people who have asked to be drawn. From left to right, top to bottom: A black girl with curly long hair, a blond non-binary person holding up a peace sign, a girl with long teal-dyed hair and a septum piercing wearing an aro flag, another person with short purple dyed hair with another aro flag, Celia herself, and a south asian girl with a short bob cut.
Slide 3: “It will be our actions -” A man waving an aromantic flag grins.
Slide 4: “- our thoughts -”
Celia talking to two other arospec people. They discuss the nuances of what is considered flirting and how weird it is.
Slides 5:
“- our words -”
Celia stands in a side view, and from her spill forward objects like papers from a book, a petition, which spills into a drawing of her sketching out comics and another random person filling out an aromantic survey.
“- our feelings and fears and journeys of self-discovery -”
The drawing leads to a group of aro people who are standing as though at a parade. A non-binary blond person holds a big aro flag, while a guy with short brown hair stands next to them throwing a casual peace sign. Finally, a taller southeast asian girl stands next to them both, holding a sign that says “aro pride”.
“ - our activism”
Slide 6: [Text slide] “- that will build the foundations of our community.”
Slide 7: “Future aros will look back to us.”
An older chinese woman talks to a group of youth dressed in futuristic looking clothing. They are looking at a book together. She comments that the events feel just like yesterday as one of the kids asks her about the events described in the book.
Slide 8: “And … I think, at least, that it’s a blessing.”
The scene returns to the riverside where Celia was standing at the beginning of the comic. It shows Celia from the front, up close, and she’s smiling wistfully as the wind blows in her hair.
Slide 9: A zoomed out shot of the same scene from the very beginning of the comic.
“I’m grateful that I get to be here, with all of you, making history.”]

sometimes, i’m frustrated or angry at being aroace and not getting some experiences.
but at the moment i’m so very happy to be queer, to get to be a part of this community, to share these experiences with others and to laugh and cry and talk about them. i’m so happy to be able to express myself (in the ways that i can) and have, well, pride in my identity (even if at times i don’t, it’s a process).
so i hope for everyone not just during june but during the whole year, everywhere, that they can eventually have those things too. that we can have pride :)
