apples, he has come to learn, are sweetest when picked just before they’re ripe. he has long - since lost track of how many he’s picked & how many apple pies & batches of cider he’s made out of them, but it’s only made him an expert. but to dwell on the thought would mean giving in to the pride so easily slipped into, so he raises a ladle of apple cider, dark, expectant eyes on @ezerkenegdc.

because of you, in gardens of blossoming flowers i ache from the perfumes of spring. i have forgotten your face, i no longer remember your — aching words so quickly forgotten as the other speaks. the powder blue poetry book is closed around her thumb as she leans forward in her chair to taste what was offered. she hummed thoughtfully as the warm liquid filled her mouth, her eyes closed as if that would help the thoughts come with more clarity. “ have you added any clove to this? i think that would help.” she offered.

“You…” It’s strange to feel oneself empathize to the people you were told were monsters. Why did the stranger tell them about the starvation of herself and her loved ones? Why did it hurt to hold such a small pumpkin? Why did Vale feel like they were a little kid found with their hand in the cookie jar? Why did they feel so small? Why were they frozen in their spot, their old sneaker gently kicking a pebble aside? Their voice is gentle and a bit ashamed. “What do you mean you guys are starving? Don’t you have lots of farms?”
she turns her face from the light as sadness drapes around her like a familiar second skin. the farms, the farms. hope county had once been covered in rich farmland that obeyed no fence line. neighbor shared with neighbor and there had been enough to go around, but then the rot began to eat away at the roots, and brotherly love was quickly killed out back behind the barn. it was everyone for themselves with arguments breaking out by the scarecrows and petty backstabbing occurring between watering cycles, but, even then, there had been a quiet respect because there were still mouths to feed. for years this fragile peace endured until the first field went up in flames, and then another, and then another. they could have survived that too, but then the silos were blown in rapid succession. there was nothing left, and no time. her lip quivered, her stomach panged. what of the children? “ not anymore, i’m afraid.”

“I-I’m…I’m here ‘cause we’re hungry. My friends, got some family too, we…” Fuck, this was so bad, but everything about them screamed suspicion if they didn’t show themself. With the small pumpkin cradled in their arms, Vale stepped closer from the shadows. Vale showed themself, their messy brown hair with hints of mottled red and blue dye obvious under the few lights outside. “My name’s Vale. Lots of people back home got their farms ransacked, and I figured I could steal a pumpkin and get a lot of use out of it. Pumpkin seeds could get planted or roasted and the rest of the pumpkin can get used to make food.”
Showing that they weren’t unreasonable, Vale sat the pumpkin down on the ground. “People are starving and I don’t know what to do.”
“ take it. ” her soft heart would not allow them to leave empty handed, but what about her people? had the stranger come months before, she would not have thought twice about sharing the crops, but then someone blew the stockpile silos throughout the valley, and years of hard work had been destroyed within the width of a heartbeat. hannah had been tasked with ensuring that there was enough food to go around during their seven years below, and with the collapse on the horizon, there was not enough time to resupply. there was hardly a pound of food per person to go around, and every farm had been over planted weeks ago in hopes of changing that. “ but only that one, because we are too. ”

❝ Oh thank God… my car broke down about a half mile back. I was hoping for a little help. ❞
the autumn painted leaves crunched beneath agatha’s hooves as she was guided through the shadowed woods to reach the neighbording farmlands. hannah looked one way and then the other as they reached the road with the intention of crossing it, but stopped short when an unfamiliar voice called out. “ ‘m sorry, i don’t have a phone with me , but the delaynes might. ” hannah replied while gesturing to the faded red barn in the distance.

the flickering fluorescent light bathed the cramped concrete bathroom in a beryl blue shade causing what had been crimson and puce to appear pitch and pallid in the cracked mirror. a sharp inhale at the sight, a sharper exhale shortened by staccato deep coughs that had her breaking eye contact with the cadaverous reflection looking back at her. when the coughing fit subsided, she twisted the cold water tap and scrubbed from forearm to fingertip with the same fervor as lady macbeth did with her damned spot until the water was running clear and the ache fluttering across her knuckles slightly dulled down. there was nothing equally clean enough to dry her hands with so they hung lamely above the basin until the dripping slowed and her courage had time to gather around her. only then did she dare to let her gaze fall below her shoulders to inspect the burn stretching across the right side of her body. a hesitant finger reached out to touch it to see if there was still feeling there, but contact was not established for long because as soon as flesh met singed flesh tears poured down her ruddy cheeks and she was biting her own bicep to keep from crying out and waking miriam. the pretty fabric she had chosen to wear that morning that had once draped loosely across her ribs and soft stomach no longer were separate, and trying to do so only resulted in blood and more tears. blindly she reached behind her to shut the door as her pained noises grew in volume only to remember belatedly that the doors had been removed from their hinges for protective measures.
always the fool with the slowest heart.
the radiation, he explained as he laid the hammer at her bare feet. and the concussion, he added as he crawled across the mottled length of her body to lay against her back. you could pass out from either, the doors will have to go until i know that the dangers have passed, he said as he pressed kisses along the curve of her shoulder as she faced resolutely away from him, every inch of her as stiff as she could muster in the moment. what if i couldn’t get to you? or you couldn’t get to our daughter? what then? he cooed as he pressed his stubbled cheek against the crown of her soot covered head. baby, baby, aren’t you overjoyed? our daughter. our daughter is with us, again! she flinched at the use of the shared determiner, our , neither of them deserved to carry the title that it implied after what stretched between them. there was too much pain, too much pain , and he wanted to pretend that there was something more than biology tethering them together? hannah wanted to hit him all over again as the thoughts of their failure continued to spiral and build within her. it was his fault that they had been set to this path, but it was also hers for never thinking to stray from it, to never look too closely at his story. grief blinded her and he knew it. she moved then, her elbow making contact with his rib cage causing him to sigh before seeking her mouth with his. she attempted to deny him, but his hand found the burn which brought about a stillness allowing for the affection he wanted to be gained. he promised to return shortly with medicine for it before removing himself from her bed and the room with the doors tucked under his arm and a smile on his face as if he had completed a task on his honey to-do list for her.
how was i supposed to see the way?
her jaw trembled as her teeth bared down once more. the pain was becoming too much and what her husband professed to fear was becoming more reasonable by the second. she did not want to pass out. she did not want to make him right. hadn’t she done that enough? hannah reached for the counter to steady herself when a clanging noise echoed behind her. a rattling of some sort followed that she did not immediately place, but once she did, it was with sobering and chilling clarity: the handcuffs. miriam’s handcuffs, to be exact. she wasn’t sure where joseph found them, if they had been from his own arrest or if he thought to steal them before pulling their bodies from the crumpled truck, but that really wasn’t all that important in the grand scheme of their current situation, was it? what she did know was that this was also for their protection. keeping her confined to her bed was going to be difficult, he had lamented as he lifted their daughter’s bird bone wrist to the brutalist metal bed frame. he continued his speech from there, but the delirium keeping her bound to her bed also kept her from comprehending any full sentences or meaning from it. how long ago was that one-sided conversation?
turn off all alarms and lie to me.
the charred parts of hannah’s body are hastily angled away from miriam’s narrowed line of vision as she moves to soothe her child. she wanted to assuage her that everything in the end would be well and right, but the other parent beat her to the conversation leaving no room for her soft words. she did not speak when he spoke, she did not move when he moved; this was the way. joseph was seated in a dinged silver and brown chair that was angled towards miriam with his legs stretched out before him so far that they disappeared beneath the bed itself. a familiar and relaxed pose, but his nose was crooked a little too far to the left, his eyes a little too ringed with purpling bruises for there to be any comfort to be found in the familiarity. what a sight he must make to miriam now, lording over her in this righteousness. what a sight she must make, kneeling at his side with her clean hands against his thigh. “ please, joseph. ” she hysterically begged as tears sprung anew. “ please, don’t do this. ” he raised an eyebrow as if to say: do what? and hannah tilted her chin in miriam’s yelling direction as if to say: this, to her.
haven’t i given enough?
“ it’s been a long day. you must be tired. ” joseph reasoned all honey like as the night reached the darkest point. his rough hand, which she once admired for its shapely appearance, wrapped possessively around her wrist as he reached beside the chair to grab a canary yellow med kit bursting at the seams. he began to set the bag on the corner of the twin bed, but miriam’s sock-covered feet stopped him short as they feverishly kicked in his direction. the look he gave her was that of a benevolent father as he laid the kit instead on his unoccupied thigh. from within he pulls a squat vial of colorless liquid with a smudged label and a thin syringe tipped with a capped needle. hannah began to fight as his teeth wrapped around the cap, his intentions had become clear. she didn’t know what was in the vial, didn’t know what it could do, and she didn’t know if it would be used to harm miriam further. he held fast though, and shushed her as the needle punctured the thin membrane keeping the clear liquid trapped. instead of tugging, she tried pushing, if he fell maybe she could — ? the needle pressed against the crook of her elbow, the plunger is pressed down swiftly, and the fight is quelled. as her last act she bites not her own flesh, but his, where her own face marked his salty skin. it is strange to know what both versions of you taste like. the world was an endless night as her daughter howled, and her husband hummed.
given enough?
twice, the sun uselessly traveled across the sky before hannah found the strength to open her eyes in the darkened room. leaving her decumbent position felt impossible, so her sleep laden limbs did what her eyes could not. ringless fingers crossed mountains and valleys taking stock of the damage that remained until they shyly reached the bandage wrapped loosely around her midsection. the metallic butterfly had wings that easily parted as she peeled away layer by layer until her stomach was made bare. her mouth went dry as the filtered air pressed drafty kisses along the damage. what did it look like? did it look as disgusting as she felt? before the exploration could continue to what had become of the rest of her, a voice she terribly missed broke the silence. " you know he will never let us leave, right? you know this is our grave. " @prodigcl confessed , her voice like a croak. with little care for the pain it caused, hannah rested her chin against her shoulder as she sought the outline of her daughter in the dimness and found that while her injuries appeared to be taken care of , her wrist was still bound above her head. they had failed there it seemed, but that could be their only failure if there was going to be a chance of survival. “ no,” hannah firmly replied. “ no, i won’t let it be yours. i have failed you too many times before, and i will not fail you again .”

❛ I’ll take care of you. ❜ + [ STEADY ]: sender gently catches and guides the emotionally distressed receiver against a wall in order to physically steady them.
like icarus when he reached for the sun, the helicopter was coming down in rapid circles as the rotor mast burned like the wax that attached his wings. hannah watched on in abject horror as screams filled the night, her feet stumbling and squelching in the mud as she attempted to close the distance between herself and the wreckage. project members reached for her, grasped at the hems of her clothing seeking her guidance, fighting to hear what she might have to say, but her mouth was already open and the only thing coming out was too quick, too sharp breaths. the helicopter landed upside down with an echoing crash and the world seemed to tip with it. her eyelashes fluttered against her cheeks as her nervous system disengaged as her hands rose to cover her mouth as she felt the contents of the family dinner she enjoyed hours before ached within her stomach. it is then someone grasps her around the waist and guides her backwards with no resistance. she couldn’t provide any even if she really tried because her body had fully given up on functioning properly as the fear took hold. the only thing she could do was look to the sight of the accident in search of finding the recognizable outline of her husband walking away from it all. as the walls of the church warmly wrapped around the pair, and hannah is guided with gentle hands to look into familiar eyes on the wrong face , some of her comes back. in a maddening fluctuation, she pushes him away and tugs him closer as she cycles through the realization that her husband may be dead and that there still could be a chance.
his fingers are in her hair , along her jaw; his mouth opens , she has to focus to hear when @devought says: ❛ i’ll take care of you. ❜
her crescent indented palm slid flatly against his back, half holding him to her now as she lowly whimpered in response. it wasn’t supposed to be like this. the family had spoken at extended length about what could happen when the authorities came looking, but it was never supposed to be like this. the priority was to submit willingly to the law and forgo the violence if it could be helped then, on the following day john would drive through the tunnel to the next town over and take care of the legal proceedings as he had done a thousand times before on behalf of a thousand others. his record had been impeccable and things would proceed as planned from there. that’s what joseph said. that’s what he told her over and over again. that everything would be okay and he would come home before she even knew he was away from it but, she did know it. she knew it the second he was led away from the church. he was to be gone a night, maybe two, but never forever. the yelling reached a fever pitch not too far from where they were pressed against the wooden walls and hannah tried to look to see the cause, but found she couldn’t when the fingers on her jaw pressed a little harder against teeth and bone. “ but what if he’s not coming home? ”

WHAT WAS ALL THE FUSS ABOUT?? truly. yes the dissenters held a misplaced confidence due to this new bothersome deputy. (what was their name again??) brothers had left the room, both jacob and joseph as the baptist scoffed, chuckling under breath he still sat in his chair. two fingers rub against right eye. there was a familiar ache there, a throb. though smile was worn, anger simmered just below leveled surface. a crackling mantle that allowed magma to seep through. despite placating elder brothers, that familiar anger warmed a cold heart.
one leg crossed at the knee, it bounced as he thought and thought! and thought!! this new troublesome outlier had decimated another silo, which was not brought up in the meeting. tongue rolled over lower lip, another chuckle. teeth revealed as fist collided with the arm of the plush chair he still sat in. thissssss deputy! he reasoned inwardly. this deputy would pay but not with their life! no no. no. their life was nothing, pathetic. useless. no they would not be martyred. why, they just needed to listen to reason, and who? i ask. who is more reasonable then the baptist. silver tongue and bright of halo. knuckle rap against the arm now, lightly. insistently. ‘ we just need to talk, that’s all. show them the correct path, my path. MINE. ‘ spoken out loud with a grin. worry forced deeper / hidden.
@ezerkenegdc
earlier that day, prior to the arrival of the brothers, hannah had decided to wear the largest knitted sweater she owned and to open all of the windows to allow for the crisp autumn air to come and chill their home. along the way she hummed ( and sometimes off-key sang) a song she had heard years ago on the radio that she could no longer remember all the words to with a joyfulness in her heart that had been missing for some time. pillows were fluffed, blankets were neatly folded, and tiny pumpkins were interwoven throughout the sparse decor of their house. each room was given a second looking over as she walked from one to the other with a broom and dustpan in hand. once satisfaction was reached , she found her way back to the kitchen to place sever large honey-crisp apples, one small orange, a handful of cinnamon sticks, and a measure only her heart knew of clove, allspice, nutmeg, and brown sugar in a pot of warming water on the stove.
and there, in the sanctity of her kitchen, she stayed like a ghost when the screen door groaned as it opened as three familiar sets of footfalls could be heard coming across the threshold. she had forgotten who was coming over tonight and frozen against the stove as if her stillness would protect her from being found in a place she belonged. their voices raised and lulled in the other room as they conversed for what felt like hours before there was a soft scraping of furniture against the floor, two sets of footsteps, and the groaning of the front door opening again. when the unease did not abate with their departure , hannah filled a mug nearly to the brim with the drink she had been simmering and took to walking through the house again , but this time in search of her husband who should have been sitting alone by the fire. he would make this all better.
instead she found the youngest of the siblings, the one she had been desperately avoiding. an unusual noise left her mouth as she tried to quietly step back too quickly causing the warm cider to soak the sleeve of her sweater as it sloshed about to lash at everything within a few inches reach. the door jamb was against the flat plane of her shoulder , from the corner of her eye she could still see the kitchen , she shouldn’t make a run for it. besides , he had already seen her. “ john ! i’m sor — did you — do you need something for the journey home? ”

her cheap beer was sweating just about as much as they were, hiding out from the summer heat in the only bar between hope county & helena. “ for fun, & for the rodeo fame. ”
mary dug her wallet out of her pocket, searching for a quarter for the machine in the corner. “ I wanted to be the next best bull rider after polly reich, but I broke my arm my second show & my mom wouldn’t let me do it anymore. ” that was a historic fairgrave fight if there ever was one. “ barrel racin’ was my thing after that. they don’t have rodeos in georgia ? ”
“ i feel like they do, but we moved so often that i’m not really sure. ” hannah explained as she tried to think back to that time in her life, but the only memory that comes through with any clarity is when her father was watching some documentary ( or maybe it was a movie starring steve mcqueen? ) about this bareback rider named bruce ford who was the first to win a million dollars at the rodeo. her father gently tugged at the sleeve of her sweater to gain her attention before telling her that a million dollars was enough money for her to swim around in , which she thought was funny at the time , but the real joke was on her when she later found out that she couldn’t swim in anything at all. with the grainy film in mind, hannah replaced bruce ford with the wild fair haired woman and imagined her instead holding tightly to a flank strap as tense seconds ticked by as rodeo attendees shouted her name in joyful horror. mary may belonged there with a grin as wide as texas and two state titles to her name. “ if you won a million dollars . . . what would you do with it? ”

Miriam tenses as if Hannah slapped her across the face. The backhand of God. It’s a dagger, not in her heart but in her stomach, something that can slowly twist and make her ill. Your father. Sounds so much like ‘your fault’. Like she is responsible for her genesis, like she should have chosen better. It is a personal failing, to come from that man, to be the result of his grunting and shoving. Miriam feels like she inherited something old and evil in the blood, and the ties that bind her are wrapped around her throat like piano wire.
Her eyes harden to chips of ice. She looks at her without mercy, a slow drilling, a dissection. It constricts in her throat, a scratching screeching animal that begs to crawl out of her mouth and accuse Hannah, too. What a mother, what a woman. She didn’t think, she didn’t ask, because it didn’t matter. No one here truly matters to Hannah Seed. Ignorance really is bliss. An old anger boils in her gut. She was forgotten in the cage, in the woods, by the roadside, in the torture chamber, just like she was forgotten in the hospital crib. Her father failed to kill her and her mother didn’t care to ask.
Tears prick at Miriam’s eyes but they are cold, so cold. She doesn’t look away. She looks at sin until it withers. Sins of the mother, arguably worse than anything else. “So what good does that do?” She chokes out, through chattering teeth. “What is the point of you? You’re no better than any of the others. You get that, right? There is nothing special about me. Nothing at all! You just decided to fuck with me for no fucking reason and now—” Her voice screws itself into a sob before it breaks. Miriam heaves.
“What do you want that Joseph doesn’t?”
ay , there’s the rub — what is the point of you and what is it that you want that he doesn’t ? the answers are one and the same — nothing. there is no point to her because there is no personhood about her and without having that she was only something which people could project upon. had she been more self aware of this , she would have known that this did not begin with anyone here , but back in tennessee with her parents who primed her for exactly that by compassionately chipping away what made her her until the family was alike in shape and trait. she did as they did with perfect imitation from that day until the day she stole a set of keys and headed south. she ran as far as she could into the arms of her husband who pressed and prodded until she too fit the perfect shape he wanted from her instead. it was effortless and easy on their part , and she never thought twice about it. she loved him as she loved her parents as she loved the girl with the gun before her , endlessly. it was a selfless love to become what was needed , what was wanted. it was what she was born to do. rekhem ‘alay , rekhem ‘alay , hannah begs the man pinned to the cross , elohim adirim 'azor li limetso ett hamilim.
“ i’m not — i’m not messing with you. ” hannah began after taking a quick glance towards her daughter. “ i want to be your mother , but i fear that time for us has already come to pass. “ not because hannah wanted for it to pass , on the contrary , but how do you untangle what has been so tightly woven ? how do you undo what twenty years has done ? how do you begin to apologize and find the right way to right what went wrong ? you can’t , you can’t , you can’t. you can only try to recreate what was lost and hope that it is enough to fill you with the love you thought you ought to have been given all along . “ i want what can only be freely given , i will not demand anything from you , and you can scold me and deny me , but please — let me try to make this right. ”

He looks down at the kitten that curls up in Hannah’s lap, protected under the cover her palms as if she fears that he might rip it from her. Joseph has never had too much time for animals. He remembers wanting a puppy as a child, but that may well be because every child wants a puppy. It was simply one of those designated desires that he played along with. But Hannah, Hannah is a beacon of nurture, a warm motherly energy that extends to all living creatures. How on earth could he deny her this simple wish?
Joseph leans down to kiss her cheek and lightly pets the cat, allows it to rub its chin along his index finger. “I get the feeling that the two of you have already made up your mind on the matter. Keep it indoors, though. Wouldn’t want anything happening to the poor thing.”
as always, he was right. long before his key found their lock, she found the malnourished creature mewling on their front porch. while he had been away tending to his flock, she had been tending to the feline by feeding it with the tips of her fingers a tepid mixture of goat’s milk and egg yolks until their belly was filled. by the time the sink was filled with dish soap and dried flowers, there was already a love binding them together and had joseph come home to say that he did not feel the same way she did, her heart would have been broken by the impending lost. thalia, hannah had taken to calling the cat when the mud and mites were washed away to reveal that she was a girl, and that she had a pretty tawny coat covering her body. thalia, hannah whispered in their empty house over and over as they went about the rest of their household duties, my girl. “ thank you, my love. she is rather sweet and hardly makes any noise at all. you’d never know she was in the same room as you. ”

“Uh, it’s, uh…it’s…” Vale sat down the pumpkin in their arms, holding both of their hands up with a worried grin on their face. “Woof? I’m just a simple lost dog on their way back home to my totally Peggie house. Please believe me.”
the rake is held tightly between her sweating palms as she wide-eye watches as the other moves about. this was no dog in search of their owner as they claimed , but a thief in the night coming to take away their supplies , and hannah did not know what to do about it. the two-way radio was heavy in her robe’s pocket , and the shifting shadows on the edge of the property would come if she called , but it was only one pumpkin , and it was a small one. her mind fumbled with a reasoning and flopped back and forth between the idea of them being either hungry or a distraction and could not settle on one. swallowing thickly, she spoke again, “ be honest , why are you here?”

She is received with a respectful nod, accompanied by the clicking and shifting of an automatic rifle that is kept to the side. The Center is alive with shouts and snarls, the busy preparations for bloodier times to come. Ber stands by in front of the office and waits for his cue.
“Yes, of course.” He rumbles, the way a large dog offers a friendly bark. The young man smiles, almost coy. “Do you want me to take you to him? Things are getting busy around here. It’d be safer.”
hannah eagerly matched the smile she was given because , though she will not openly admit to it , jacob’s home frightened her with its labyrinthian halls of peeling plaster and doors not quite fitting in their frames . never mind the sounds that echoed down them or the questionable scarlet stains and empty cages pressed against the discolored walls . yes , a companion for that long walk would be welcomed indeed . “ i knew i made you a gift for a reason. ” she playfully says as she balances the laden basket on her thigh to dig around for the packet of fresh jerky .
