Ok, I just came back from my second watch of John Wick: Chapter 4 - Baba Yaga and THERE SHALL BE SPOILERS. YOU WERE WARNED.
Rewatching it, I was able to notice several things that, in the heat of my first watch, I couldn't. I love the fact that they've been telling us the end of the movie from the very beginning and because we're talking about John Wick - a man of focus, commitment, and sheer will and that managed to survive fucking EVERYTHING life threw at him - we don't pay attention to it.
And, at least for me, knowing how the movie ends, several other things hit me like a shotgun bullet to the kevlar-padded sleeve of my ballistic suit. John's plead to Winston "to take him home", really, I think the whole theatre heard my heart shattering. I was full sobbing, ugly crying by this point, but
FUCK
THE WHOLE POETRY OF ITS ENDING.
To have this man, known by everyone for his power to kill, for his ability to accomplish impossible tasks, known and defined by the violence that was taught to him from his earliest years, about who people keep on telling us that "everything he touches, dies", that "he's cursed" - being called a brother and a son and a loving husband in his final moments. To have his whole life dedicated to killing, dedicated to violence, to end with love? His last breath was dedicated to love. His last breath was dedicated to the five years he was allowed to live like a fucking normal human being, away from blood, away from infinite killing. He died with love in his lips. He died with love in his heart and mind because THAT WAS THE ONLY FUCKING LIFE HE EVER KNEW. EVERYTHING ELSE WAS DEATH.
We've been told from the first moments of the movie that the only way John would be able to find peace would be in death. There was no life left for him. Everything was taken from him: not only Helen and Daisy, but his very chance to live. He clung to Helen, the one person that could show him love, and peace, and true attachment, because with her he was alive. As the Marquis points out, "Wick is a ghost in search of a grave", or something like that. And that's it. John's been dead since John Wick: Chapter 1. Now he is buried.
And I can only imagine how it would feel to finally find love like that. A love so strong that would turn the very Baba Yaga into John. Just John. Loving husband. Yeah, I am fucking crying again. THIS WAS SUPPOSED TO BE AN ACTION MOVIE. I WAS NOT SUPPOSED TO CRY AT THIS. FUCK.
And, obviously, the whole movie is a fucking masterpiece. The soundtrack is impeccable, bringing remixes from the original soundtrack for John Wick - Chapter 1 and new tracks that are going straight into my workout playlist. The cinematography is amazing. The wardrobe is a killer - no pun intended. The dialogues from previous movies they brought into Chapter 4 were well chosen, a true fan service, and every time the original scenes would immediately pop out in my mind. The fighting scenes, the choreographies, HOLY LORD IN THE HEAVENS. It feels amazing to watch a fighting scene in which the actors don't look like they are made out of Play-doh. Everything is fucking perfect. Everything.
John Wick is a fucking epic franchise and I dare say the best action franchise of the history of cinema precisely because it remained faithful to the characters until the very end of it. Every character is interesting, deep, and I can see the studio trying to get several spin-offs out of them - but, for now, they are who they are, from chapter 1 to chapter 4. This is where Star Wars is failing. This is where Marvel always fails. John Wick delivers everything the genre demands, delivers everything the fans would ever want. They ended John's story with a mastery that is becoming way too rare in Hollywood. We often see franchises having AWFUL sequels or withering away as the studios try to milk a dead cow. But not John.
This became one long post but, fuck it. John Wick was custom-made for me and I love this franchise so damn much. I am so happy John finally gets to rest. I am so happy the characters were not obliterated for the sake of """""""entertainment""""""". The movie is 3h long and there's not a single note out of tune in it. A most deserved and dignified and honored ending to one of the best characters ever created.
I admit that the first time I watched it, I kind of hoped that his grave would be empty and that his nameless dog would run from King's leash into his embrace. But, no. No. No. Let the man rest. He deserves it.
Do svidaniya, Jardani.
