“Honestly leaving this place behind isn’t the worst idea I’ve heard,” actually it was far from it after everything, but it wasn’t that simple. As much as she loved to terrorize her best friend leaving Steve wasn’t something she was okay with. Even if it mean Evelyn was safe. And there was no way he was leaving without Nanc either. She bit down on her lip debating her next words before she shrugged her shoulders, “instead we could just lock ourselves in at my place. My dad is on some work retreat with my mom. At least we can pretend we’re somewhere other than this hell hole.”

“The second I graduate, I’m never looking back. At least, that was the plan. Now I’m pretty sure my sister would have a heart attack if I went further than three feet away from her.” No matter how much she understood, there was a part of her that did feel a little suffocated by that. “Just the two of us, huh?” Evelyn asked, a smirk on her lips. It was the most tempting offer she had gotten in days. “No random and unwelcome visits from the Hair?”

Erin knew her sister didn’t mean the words the way her heart had taken them, and yet it still had hurt. Her hands dropped to her sides uselessly as she looked over at her sister. “I can go home. It’s just whenever I think about leaving you alone my brain starts to wonder if you’re next,” yeah, there was no hiding the panic that settled in her rapidly rising and falling chest as she looked at her sister. Except it wasn’t her beautiful healthy sister that was flashing through her mind. It was the million and two gory ways she could be ripped apart and stolen from her. “I—I can’t lose you too,” her words stumbled out leaving her vulnerable and hurting. Losing Evelyn would be the final straw for her.
Tumblr media
Evelyn tilted her head towards the ceiling as she let out a sigh. “I never said you should go home. Trust me, I’d much rather we don’t backslide to when you didn’t leave the house.” She understood it. And she was doing her best to be supportive of it, but at some point, life had to go on. Evelyn knew better than to come out and say that and risk whatever suicidal act Erin might try, but that didn’t mean that she didn’t believe it. “Nothing is going to happen to me, Erin. Okay?” She asked, letting her voice get quiet as she took her sister’s hands before Erin could fight it. “What happened to Hargrove and Chrissy wasn’t your fault just because you weren’t there. Nobody could have done anything. Besides, I’m gifted with the rationality of not being into the opposite sex. People like that don’t really seem to be his MO, so I’m fine.” It was a wildly inappropriate joke, but Evelyn cracked a small grin all the same. “I’m okay, Erin. I’m right here.”

“My only other option is sitting in my room staring at the walls, or sitting in the hospital wondering which moment I’m going to lose another person. Besides, who else would I spend time with? Everyone else is dead.” The words were dry as she turned her attention back to the movies to hide just how much it had physically hurt her heart to say them. Erin knew the real reason she stuck close to her sister. She was terrified if she so much as turned her back for a single second Evelyn would die too. “Unless you want to be alone with Robin. I can find something else to distract myself with. Maybe go check on Dustin again.”
Tumblr media
“Gee. Sister put in as a default option. No offense taken there.” Evelyn said drily, hearing the sarcasm that seeped into them. It was a bad time to be joking about it. None of it was funny. Billy and Chrissy had died. Brutally. With little idea what was happening to them, if anything Robin or Eleven told her was to be believed. She was still new to so much of what the hell was happening in Hawkins, but she was trying. No, there was nothing funny about it, but if Evelyn let herself sit in it, she might not come back. And Erin wasn’t even Erin anymore. Someone had to keep it together and she loved her sister, but it wouldn’t be her. “It’s fine, she’s still working anyway so it’s not like we’re actually alone. Besides, Harrington is already best friends with a fourteen year old, I think one is enough.”

Robin’s eyes flickered around the store trying to spot if her sister was anywhere nearby. It wasn’t odd for Erin to be glued to her sister after everything, but today seemed to be different. She leaned against the counter trying to do her best to not drag her gaze over Evelyn. She had to at least try to not be so obvious about her attraction. “As soon as Wilson comes in today. Pretty boy is too busy stalking Wheeler to come in. But he should be here in about half an hour. Did you have any ideas swirling around in that pretty head of yours?” She asked curiously raising her eyebrows.
Tumblr media
“When isn’t he stalking Nancy.” Honestly, so far as Evelyn was concerned, that was the real question. She had never seen the appeal of Steve Harrington and if she was being honest - which she always was, it was her downfall - most of the time, she still didn’t. He wasn’t as much of a dick as he used to be, but he was still Steve. “I mean, it’s snowing. In the middle of spring. If it was up to me, we’d be driving out of Hawkins to somewhere normal for a few hours, but I know the Hair starts to panic if he can’t find you.”

Robin couldn’t go back to the mall. There was no question about that, and for once she was grateful that she wasn’t one of those girls obsessed with shopping. She wasn’t normal, and she knew that. Although she had always known that. Robin was a freak in every single way which at one point she hated that, but she had come to accept that. An all too familiar face caught her attention though as she leaned across the counter taking her in as she smiled. “It would be good for tourism,” she teased trying to be as easy going as possible when it came to being around Evelyn. “Although it can’t be hell if you’re around.”
Tumblr media
“Yeah, that’s what this dump needs. More people.” Evelyn snorted. “Actually, maybe.” She said after a moment, tilting her head. “What with all the death.” It was a crass comment and one she knew better than to say whenever her sister was around. Dry humor and saying shitty things about what happened in Hawkins was how she dealt with all the horrible things that kept happening, but Erin had lost someone. Regardless of Evelyn’s own feelings about Billy, that was still awful. So many people had died, people she went to school with, and that was terrible. It was hard to deny that, anymore than to keep from admitting it was part of why she had taken to going around Robin so often. If bad shit was going to keep killing people, she wanted to get as much time as she could. “How long are you stuck here?”

Erin knew where she could find her sister without question. Mostly because she was anywhere that Robin could be found. She knew what some would say about the two of them, but all she ever wanted was her sister’s happiness. No matter what that meant. Even with her own heart ripped from her chest and bloodied leaving her broken beyond repair she still wouldn’t want anything else for Evelyn. “I wonder if we could put that on the sign as you come through town. I think it’s a great town motto,” she mused knowing her voice was monotone even as she lifted her gaze to look at her sister.

“I’d say we should ask the sheriff’s office, but they’re a joke.” Hopper had been alright when he wasn’t drunk, but they had seen how they turned out. She knew better than to mention him anyway, especially to Erin. Not when he’d croaked in the same fire that killed Billy. “You don’t have to hang out here with me, you know.” Evelyn said as she looked up from the random movie she’d grabbed. “If you want to go home, it’s totally okay. I know public isn’t your favorite place these days.”

Even if the mall had reopened, she wouldn’t have been able to step foot inside - well, maybe she could, but it wasn’t worth the risk. Either it would upset Erin, or she would inevitably walk over replaced chunks of Starcourt wondering if that was the spot Billy Hargrove had died. Plus, well, as much as she missed the mall, she liked the video store. Watching the light leave Steve’s eyes at the sight of her was fun, but Robin was the main reason to go in. “Hawkins, Indiana. Hell on earth.” She huffed out a small sigh, feeling the relief as the door shut behind her. Something weird was going on, between the last two years in general, the weird week Robin was obsessed with Russian, and whatever the hell had killed Chrissy and Eddie, but the snow took the cake.
