Alexander and Napoleon met again some time after at Erfurt, and exchanged the most striking testimonies of affection. Alexander expressed with earnestness the sentiments of tender friendship and real admiration which he entertained for Napoleon. They passed some days together in the enjoyment of the charms of perfect intimacy and of the most familiar communications of private life. “We were,” said the Emperor, “two young men of quality, who, in their common pleasures, had no secret from each other.”

Alexander was wildly in fashion then and it was natural that elite gossips paired him with Jose (as well as with any prominent woman he cast a glance at) despite her respectable age. Gay rumors were impossible or they would have added poor Eugene too- their friendship was really touching)) There were also rumors that Talleyrand poisoned Jose to prevent her alliance with the tsar who preferred Nap’s son for the throne. As for Caulaincourt, it’s weird why he was so irritated - and he truly was: Louse’s "sex" with the tsar wouldn't threaten political relations between  France and Russia.. hm)  

Is there a single European monarch Alexander was NOT rumored to have slept with??

the ambassador in question is Caulaincourt btw. Oh but that’s not all.

the author then goes to assure that these relationships remained strictly platonic (which I’m inclined to agree with). But it is insane that Josephine died mere days after his last visit
