She should have really been feeling sorry for the other; more so with the number that was stated (seventh, really? She had actually thought that  it was her third!), but given her line of work, thinking of the consequences that her actions might have on others isn’t exactly her forte. Still though, as posed by her unapologetic smile, Raine did not heed much mind to the reaper’s statement. 

She then looked down on her left thigh, noting the laceration caused by the struggle that had ensued between her and the one who had unfortunately gotten the short end of the stick. It wasn’t bleeding heavily, but nonetheless, damaged was done, and needless to say, she was actually surprised that she had given the victim an opening in the first place.  ❝Mm... got a bit clumsy at some point.❞

I’m fine.

Time and time again, it was the response she had been given for every hand extended towards him. With her gaze returning his watchful eyes, with the beating of her heart echoing through her ears followed by the shadows of a drum, Raine kept a tight lip. To begin with, it was not like she was expecting anything else from Kane; but undoubtedly did certain emotions let themselves known from within and she resisted the urge to slap the wounded arm just to inflict more pain.

But she understood him; having had been alone herself for so long, she quite knew the character of never giving others the chance to help despite an offer being proposed. It was the life that they had both led for years on end, so it was not like she could be entirely frustrated at the walls he had built up. 

Nonetheless, to hear his questions of which sounded suspiciously concerned, the woman released a sigh. What was she ever going to do with him? He brushed her off without hesitation, and yet there he was, dark hues masking things that she could not help but wish to know.

❝Moments like these I wish that you’d worry about yourself more,❞ She said with that usual light-hearted tone of hers,  ❝What’s the point of you doing things on your own when I’m already here.❞ It was a rhetorical question asked beneath her breath, one that had escaped her before she could stop it. Perhaps it was due to the adrenaline rushing through her veins, or maybe it was the frustration seeping through, she could not say for sure.  ❝And I’m fine-- got a few scratches here and there, but nothing out of the ordinary.❞

you tend to be more preoccupied with practical things, to the point where you've been blinded to matters of the heart. sure, you're close with this person. you like to be close with people. it is rewarding to know and be known in return. you leave realization no choice but to sneak up on you. they're not even in the room when it happens. someone or something else spells it out for you, an observant friend's passing comment or a particular sentence you were reading in a book, and suddenly it hits you, what it all means. the person your feelings have been building themselves around. Oh. it's them. it's time. it's them and you, here and now, and you have to decide what to do at this crossroads. luckily, you're practically-minded.

Upon hearing those words, the once cold-hearted homicide detective could not help the way a rather goofy smile had decided to spread across her features. Dimples deepened themselves into the surfaces of her cheeks, just as the corners of her lips reached her eyes. She then scrunched her nose and shook her head, as if willing herself to regain her composure.

❝Okay, what do you want? Do you want a branded bag? Shirt? House appliance? Money?❞ She looked at him seriously, a furrow between her eyes as she playfully acted the role of that being confused.

Silence was what Raine responded with as she listened to the other. With her gaze unwavering from the old, bricked building outside, she clenched her jaw and exhaled, a single thought coming to a stop within the depths of her mind. She could do just that. . . she could lower the hypothetical drawbridge that she has had up throughout all these years and let someone come to her empty desert, or she could keep it up and continue to live with the fact that letting people in would cause nothing but trouble; after all, that was something she had learnt the hard way.

❝Take me out for dinner for, then we’ll see.❞ Was what she had ultimately said as she glanced at Haru with a quirked brow. Whether she was serious or not, the detective’s tone came out rather light-heartedly altogether, knowing that a hard block on the conversation would be a little too dramatic for the given situation.

Perhaps it can attribute it to his upbringing: his mother had always been on the side of mild curry with a hint of sweetness hence when the lady decided to add more curry, the man was skeptical but when the solution was offered, Haruto chuckled. “Ah, there is a milk… Do you have mangos? I can make lassis for us for you know, to perfect the meal.” His suggestion was said somewhat in confident tone, “Just so you know, I help my mum a lot in the kitchen so my skill is unmatched.” The younger man had the courage to even wink at her playfully.

Taking note of the other’s confidence, especially the wink, Raine shook her head and hummed, ❝Actions do speak louder than words,❞ She said, stirring the pot before her, ❝I’ll let you know if your skills are truly ‘unmatched’ once I have a taste myself. A smalll ‘aha!’ slipped through his mouth and soon he put up the said item.  “Don’t ask why I carry this around, it is something that my mum ingrained since I was a kid.” He approached the lady to share the umbrella with. “Want to go somewhere else?”

Hearing him speak his words, Raine resisted the urge to chuckle as a quick thought ran through her mind, one she was not afraid to voice out, ❝Hey, I’m not the one caring about whether I’m a bad influence or not; I’m just being mindful of the rumours that may possibly involve you and I.❞ With that said, she looked through the double glass doors behind him and took note of the nosy ladies whose gazes were seemingly stuck on them. Amusement and curiosity had written itself freely upon their features, and Raine was more than glad to give them a small smile and wave just to let them know that she knew what it was exactly that they were planning on sharing with the rest. 

❝I was planning on going home,❞ She admitted, her focus shifting over to him,  ❝But since you’ve decided to tag along, might as well go elsewhere. Have a place in mind?❞

Matt grinned over at the other and nodded his head. She was right, to be fair. They had a pretty strong and rare friendship and he was lucky to have her - hence why he was extra relieved to see her back and safe. “Little bit of panic is acceptable, I think.” he replied, chuckling softly as he brought his beer to his lips once more for another drink. 

“Yeah, well… You know me. I get kinda committed to things and it’s probably not healthy. But I guess it’s worth it when I get to help prevent people falling down dangerous paths or losing their lives. Just doesn’t leave that much room for a lot of socialising.” His shoulders lifted and dropped in a relaxed shrug. “But is there anything I need to know that I’ve missed out on? Anyone I should know about in your life?”

❝To be fair, you could be out and trudging through those dangerous paths that you’ve mentioned, so it’s not exactly a bad thing to have you so committed to the job.❞ It was then when Raine had finally allowed a grin to tug upon her mouth, a wink following right behind it. And as the question was thrown her way, she scrunched her nose and shook her head,  ❝Was tempted to get myself a fling while I was gone, but then every guy I met just turned me off one way or another,❞ She said,  ❝Had way too many moments of me questioning as to why they even bothered to... open their mouths.❞

❝Nearly punched an asshole at a pub the other week-- but he passed out pissed drunk before I could do anything.❞

She had let out a chuckle at his earlier response, easily picking up the light-heartedness in which had been interlaced with spoken words. ❝Well, of course,❞ She said, ❝You’re a friend, aren’t you? A rare find at that. Hell, I might even panic a little if you were to completely up and disappear one day, if I’m being completely honest.❞

❝You and work, huh? You know, I’m not even surprised about that.❞ In consideration of the length in time of Raine knowing Matt, she knew that he was serious with his answer. It had been one of the reasons they had gotten along so well; both their devotions to their respective occupations. Or at least, that was what Raine liked to think. Nevertheless, it was great seeing him let loose every once in a while, even if that ‘once’ consisted of him, her, and a couple of drinks throughout the quietude of the night.

He had been surprised to see her familiar face across the room earlier, almost doing a double take upon realising that he was not imagining things. It had been far too long since he had last seen her, considering her to be a good friend when they were working together and then after that. She was a good person, and good at her job. 

“No need to thank me. I’m sure you’d be the same roles reversed. At least, I hope you would.” There was a slight teasing tone in the words he used, and he smiled softly at her. “Nothing too new with me. Same old, same old, really. Working and, well, working.”

Matt gave a small nod as he too a sip of his beer, listening to what Raine had to say. It was rather strange to see his old friend back after being gone for so long, but he wasn’t about to question things too much. If she wanted to tell him something, she would. “I understand. Just… Well, naturally I was worried about you. But it’s just good to see you back.”

She appreciated it; the fact that he simply took it all in, no questions asked. She sat on her stool, musings running around her mind but all in all, she was glad that Matt just. . . understood. ❝Thanks.❞ She began,  ❝For understanding, for worrying.❞ Maybe it was what she had been waiting for that whole time, the simple response that he had given her. 

With the tension from her shoulders seemingly disappearing-- the tension in which she had unknowingly felt since she saw him from the other side of the bar-- Raine took another sip of the wine and turned slightly to the other, ❝Anyway, how have you been? Anything new? Anything exciting?❞
