Check out some of the amazing deep-sea animals observed during the recent Midwater Ecology R/V 𝘞𝘦𝘴𝘵𝘦𝘳𝘯 𝘍𝘭𝘺𝘦𝘳 expedition!

1. One of the marine biologists participating on our current expedition, George Matsumoto, discovered and described this giant red medusa in 2003 with several colleagues. The bell can grow up to a meter wide!

It was named 𝘛𝘪𝘣𝘶𝘳𝘰𝘯𝘪𝘢 𝘨𝘳𝘢𝘯𝘳𝘰𝘫𝘰 in recognition of the research contributions of the ROV 𝘛𝘪𝘣𝘶𝘳𝘰𝘯𝘪𝘢, retired by MBARI in 2008. 

2. The ethereal siphonophore, 𝘌𝘳𝘦𝘯𝘯𝘢 𝘳𝘪𝘤𝘩𝘢𝘳𝘥𝘪, was spotted at 850 meterts. The nectophores (swimming bells) were purple and the end of the tail (siphosome) was laden with eggs. We estimated it to be a whopping one meter (three feet) long!

These gelatinous animals are armed with a battery of powerful stinging tentacles and have been observed ensnaring fish just above the seafloor.

3. We were lucky enough to see two 𝘝𝘢𝘮𝘱𝘺𝘳𝘰𝘵𝘦𝘶𝘵𝘩𝘪𝘴 𝘪𝘯𝘧𝘦𝘳𝘯𝘢𝘭𝘪𝘴 during this expedition. They live in the oxygen minimum zone in Monterey Bay.
