'Minecraft Earth' will Shut down On June 30th
A little over a year after bringing Minecraft Earth in the US, Microsoft announced this week it will shut down the game later in the year. Minecraft Earth players will have until June 30th , 2021 to play the augmented reality title. It's no longer available to download from app marketplaces and is not available for purchase.
Developer Mojang Studios blamed the coronavirus pandemic as well as the changes to day-to-day life that have been brought about by it for the sudden shutdown. The studio stated that Minecraft Earth was built around the concept of free movement and collaborative play. Similar to Niantic with Pokemon Go, Mojang had modified the game to make it more accessible to play at home. Clearly, these changes were not enough.
After many exciting adventures, we have made the difficult decision that Minecraft Earth will be shut down in June 2021. We are so grateful for your help. The final build today contains a variety of changes to make the last few months as enjoyable as possible.

The studio has released one final update to Minecraft Earth. It comes with modifications that "make your time in Minecraft Earth more enjoyable." The update also eliminates real-money transactions, and dramatically reduces the time it takes for players to build and craft items within the game. Additionally, players can look through all the content Mojang had been working on prior to the announcement today. Mojang said that they believe these changes will allow players to play, create, explore and share more, all while staying safe in their homes.
Microsoft will erase user data on July 1, after June 30th has passed. Life You'll receive a token if you make a purchase in Minecraft Earth during the game's existence. This token will allow you to download the Bedrock version of Minecraft on your phone. You can find more details about the shut-down on the Minecraft website.
It's a disappointing end for Minecraft Earth for Microsoft. Microsoft had high hopes for the game when it first shown in action at WWDC 2019. It's not a good indicator for consumers who will be using AR applications in the near future that Minecraft Earth was unable to outlast the epidemic with all of Microsoft’s resources.
"We're eternally grateful for the amazing talent of the Minecraft community," Mojang said. "This was not an easy decision, and we're doing everything we can to make sure you get the most out of Minecraft Earth before it sunsets."
