Hello dear Tumblr artists, if you need some drawing inspo, would you try Disney princesses with aquiline noses? I would love to be Belle but have a bit of a witchy nose... Hahaha

Where to find some of the Sherlock Holmes manuscripts. So, if you want to read the SH stories in ACD’s own hand, you’ll find in this list all the manuscripts that are available via online. Here they are in all their glory and with all the corrections from those times ACD forgot a place or character’s name and when he changed a “he” for “my friend” and a “you” for “my poor Watson”, enjoy!
A Study in Scarlet (fragment)
A Scandal in Bohemia (entire work)
The Adventure of Black Peter (fragment)
The Adventure of Charles Augustus Milverton (fragment)
The Adventure of the Dancing Men (entire work)
The Adventure of the Dying Detective (fragment)
The Adventure of the Empty House (fragment)
The Adventure of the Greek Interpreter (fragment)
The Adventure of the Golden Pince-Nez (entire work)

Love this great Star Wars history and trivia!
Late Halloween Spooks - Luke’s severed hand
Want to learn some useless (but interesting) Star Wars trivia I learned over the week as I was bored and browsing the internet and reading through some archival Star Wars books that is macabre enough to fit on Halloween week? Did you know that in the Empire Strikes Back, in the third draft of the movie, Luke was to lose his left arm instead of his right hand? This would have been very similar to the injury that his father goes through in Attack of the Clones.
There were different inserts that only a select few were able to read. These were able to be found thanks to The Making of Empire Strikes Back.
In Insert A of the script, we read that Vader cuts “Luke’s arm off at the elbow! Luke’s forearm flies away in the wind as the boy himself almost goes over the edge … He wipes the tears and blood from his eyes, but can still barely focus on his massive opponent.” This is the first mention of Luke losing a limb in any of the drafts (though Vader becoming Luke’s father was added in the second).
Later, on the medical frigate at the end of the film, Insert C picks up: “Luke’s lower left arm is exposed, revealing metal struts and electronic circuits similar to Threepio.” This is mirrored in Ralph McQuarrie’s artwork for this scene. Note how the droid is right in the middle of Luke’s left elbow performing surgery - nowhere near the forearm or wrist like what we see in the final movie.

They even went as far as having Mark Hamill make a cast with his left hand that ended up not being used in the movie. It was sold at auction a few years ago. So this means that this was very close to happening in the final movie until the shooting draft changed things up.

They later had Mark come back and make another cast with his right.

And then we have the switch to the right hand, instead of left arm, in the final script. There are two reasons I think as to why they made this shift - one, that it was a lot easier to convincingly show someone lose a hand than an arm. Sure, we saw poor Ponda Baba’s arm in the first movie but there were never any shots of the actor as it would have been difficult to pull off. I imagine that Anakin losing his right arm was more along what George Lucas wanted to happen with Luke but he didn’t have the technology to pull it off at the time. Second, there is something more thematically devastating when it comes to losing your swordhand than your offhand. It ups the stakes and creates an even more compelling challenge for both the character and the audience (we will just ignore that Mark Hamill is actually left-handed
Here are some cool (and grizzly) shots of the hand prop as well as the stump:
Tumblr media
You can see where Mark would have held it in place and how we would have squeezed to make it shoot out. This is also why there are sparks in the film when he loses his hand - pyrotechnics in action to make the shot look more realistic and hide the practical effects.
Tumblr media
The prop itself is actually in pretty good condition. This scan is from a French archive book that shows the prop with the lightsaber still in place (which means if Maz Kanata actually found it, that means the hand really would still have been attached - hah). The attention to detail to Mark’s own hand is pretty remarkable.
Tumblr media
This is all very minute but I thought it was interesting seeing the way something so small can change an entire scene, and how much one small detail can change along the way through script revisions. I’m also always in favor of talking about the practical effects that LucasFilm was able to pull off at the time. It really is incredible once you look past the layers of the movie and into the effects and work that went behind it to make it appear as realistic as possible.
Thank you for my TED talk and remember to keep appreciating Luke.
