The reality is that no single person can fix the entirety of the current ecological imbalance that has been literally centuries in the making at this point. Yet there are so, so many of us who care, and who are doing what we can to make a difference in whatever every day to day ways we're able. I often think of conservation efforts like the Loren Eiseley story "The Star Thrower" (aka, "the starfish story"). Amid a beach full of stranded starfish, one person cannot possibly save them all, but they can spend what time they have saving those they're able.

And this study shows that these efforts do, in fact, make a difference, not just for starfish but a myriad of species. This meta-analysis of almost 200 studies definitively proves that conservation preserves and restores biodiversity, keeping more species from going extinct. It's all too easy to get entangled in the losses, but we even more need to allow ourselves to celebrate the wins.

That success is crucial to convincing governmental entities and other stakeholders that putting funds toward conservation efforts makes a significant difference and is not only worth the investment, but worth increasing. And, on a personal level, it's necessary for those of us who care so deeply for this world to know when our efforts are having an impact, to buoy us up when the anxiety and grief over ecological destruction wears us down.

My website has come a long way from its origins as a small site with a few spreads available for doing a digital tarot reading. While there's only a few decks of cards available (those that are in the public domain), there are now 33 spreads available, and more are being added frequently as of late.

Newer additions include a 12 month, 13 card oracle for the year, a five card cross (four elements with a significator), a Whispers of the Ancestors spread I found and liked (for communicating with one's ancestors), and a two card spread (with one being a significator). A description of what each set of cards in a spread signifies can be previewed on the site

The site offers a rather subdued, old-Internet style experience, even if it is optimized for mobile and features some subtle responsive design that makes looking at the cards hassle-free. It is coded from scratch in PHP by me, and doesn't use a content management system. While I did attempt to put mostly non-intrusive advertising on the site relevant to the tarot decks being used in the past, I gave up on that and there is no advertising on the site. What you will not find on the site are endless marketing ploys for monetized "spiritual" products, or Search Engine Optimized design made to suck all the character out of the site in order to appeal to the lowest common denominator of mysticism. In fact, the site does have a donate button, but donations are really the only way the site is monetized. It is first and foremost a labor of love.

Y'all, the world is sleeping on what NASA just pulled off with Voyager 1

The probe has been sending gibberish science data back to Earth, and scientists feared it was just the probe finally dying. You know, after working for 50 GODDAMN YEARS and LEAVING THE GODDAMN SOLAR SYSTEM and STILL CHURNING OUT GODDAMN DATA.

So they analyzed the gibberish and realized that in it was a total readout of EVERYTHING ON THE PROBE. Data, the programming, hardware specs and status, everything. They realized that one of the chips was malfunctioning.

So what do you do when your probe is 22 Billion km away and needs a fix? Why, you just REPROGRAM THAT ENTIRE GODDAMN THING. Told it to avoid the bad chip, store the data elsewhere.

Sent the new code on April 18th. Got a response on April 20th - yeah, it's so far away that it took that long just to transmit.

And the probe is working again.

From a programmer's perspective, that may be the most fucking impressive thing I have ever heard.

It bothers me how many people are morally incurious, and it bothers me even more how many people seem to think that interrogating morality is proof of immorality- because I'm pretty sure that the latter is at least partly driving the former. Asking why an action or institution is wrong does not necessarily mean that someone thinks that that action or institution is right. If you never ask yourself why something is wrong or right, then what is determining your morality? Because it's not you.
