While I'm on a Samantha Parkington kick, I am once again thinking about this one piece of dialogue from the movie:
Mr. O'Malley: I want to thank you, Samantha, for your kindness towards Nellie and the girls.
Samantha: No thanks needed, sir. Nellie and the girls are my friends.
The thing that gets me most about this is the fact that he calls her by her first name and she calls him "sir". This is the norm in the hierarchy of age, but not in the hierarchy of class. Normally, he would be calling her "miss", as Nellie does at the beginning of both the books and the movie, while she might even call him by his first name, as she does Jessie's husband, Lincoln (although race may also play into that; I would need to do more reading on how all that worked); even if she referred to him by last name, like Hawkins, there would still be a usual understanding that he is considered her inferior.
But that's not what happens here. Samantha addresses Mr. O'Malley with the same respect and dignity as she would any of her wealthy friends' parents, and she doesn't expect him to address her any differently than his own daughters, who she sees as no different than her; they're her friends, no more, no less. Even though by this point Samantha's character is already pretty well-established, I feel like this just adds something extra to it.

Happy International Women's Day!
This photo represents my account. I look to the past like Samantha to learn the stories of women and girls who inspire me. I look to the future like Nellie, full of hope for a happy, safe, and peaceful world for women and girls. They are posed in front of my drafting paper, representing the ongoing work of women's rights movements and the work yet to come, as well as female artists.

Happy year of the dragon! 🐉

Ivy and I continued our tradition of going to our city’s Lunar New Year celebration and had tons of fun! The performances, decorations, and food were all fantastic. The highlight was, of course, the wonderful lion dance!

I set up a corner with a good photo backdrop and felt that everyone deserved new portraits that are fun and visually interesting.

ah thank you!! The pattern I used is Dollhouse Designs 1930's Coat Set, but modified quite a bit. I widened the coat panels to accommodate Gwendolen's 1890s dress and removed the centre back seam. I also swapped it to have straight lapels rather than curved ones and created a separate collar piece. The pattern includes options for various cuffs/trims but I left those off as well for a simpler design!

Gwendolen took a winter walk through the forest in her brand new coat :)
I've never made a coat before so this was definitely a learning experience but I am very happy with the result!

I made Anne some bloomers using Heirloom Doll Clothes for Götz by Martha Campbell Pullen, Ph. D, using the White Bloomers pattern.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I did alter the pattern by taking out 1/2” in the leg. I was worried they would be too long, but now I see they would’ve been fine as is. These bloomers have a higher back waistline than the front
All in all, it took about 2 or so hours to sew these up. I used an amalgamation of techniques, drawing on this book, my own knowledge, and the Mary Francis School of 1910’s Sewing including:
felled hem for the lace,
hand finishing for the inner leg seams,
increased the casing from 3/4” to 1 1/8” to accommodate the elastic I had on hand,
moved up the leg elastic placement,
stitched on top of the elastic, instead of not catching it (my machine stitch only goes to 3 mm width)
tailored the amount of elastic (from 5”/ 7” w/ 2” seam allowance, down to 4 1/2 with 1/2” seam allowance),
and added my own touch with extra lace trim above the elastic frill.

Anne is still borrowing Addy’s Semi-Historical Camisole Top, but I plan to make her this peplum camisole once I get some more lace trim… plus a petticoat with the same wide joined type lace trim I used for that lace camisole and Addy’s fancy pantalets.

thank you so much for the in depth reply! i will definitely have to check out some thrift stores and the links you sent
hi DDR!
i was wondering if you have any insight into buying or finding doll dishes? I want to make some fake food out of clay/etc, but i dont think im capable of making plates, bowls, glasses, or utensils. a precursory search on etsy and amazon showed me mostly sets that were too miniature, or toddler sized.
any recommendations would be very appreciated! ty
@/enby-dollhouse
I do in fact have some recommendations!
What has worked for me is looking for them at thrift stores and secondhand stores. Head over to the knickknacks and figurines to look for little collectible plates and souvenir mugs. Look through the dishes to find small bowls and pitchers. Be on the lookout especially for mini syrup pitchers or creamer pitchers, which look like this.
If you've tried that and not found what you're looking for, there are a few places that specialize in selling doll accessories of the right size. The Queen's Treasures has a few dishes and cutlery sets, although they're a bit more expensive. A little more reasonably priced shop Lovvbug has a wider selection.
You're right that Amazon is kind of a useless mess, but here's a 9-piece set of silverware. I own this set and they're perfectly doll-sized, just a tiny bit smaller than Kirsten's American Girl brand silverware that I also own. And here's a ten-piece set of little teacups that I bought last year.
I'm glad you asked this today because last night I was actually organizing my smaller doll accessories, including the dishes, so here are a few I pulled out to talk about.
Tumblr media
That's five plates, a mug, a teacup, a bowl, and a set of silverware. Everything but the silverware came from various thrift stores. And that's the silverware set I linked above. Nothing here is made of plastic except for the bowl.

I meant to document the process better, but I hit a flow state after attaching the sleeves and forgot to take more pictures. Regardless, I’m pleased with the end result (even if it still needs buttons).
Next one I’ll document better…

A Day in the Life of Kirsten Larson
Tumblr media
Välkommen! Kirsten is here today to tell you about a day in her life. She lives on the frontier in Minnesota Territory with her parents, siblings, cousins, and friends. She and her family recently started new lives in America after leaving Sweden in 1854. On most days, she goes to school in a one-room schoolhouse. Every day, she helps her parents with chores around the farm. Life on the frontier can be challenging, but the rewards are many.
The date today is late April of 1856. The Larson family moved into their new home a few weeks ago, after their cabin on Uncle Olav’s and Aunt Inger’s farm burned down. They bought this house and the farmland from their friends the Stewarts, who joined a wagon train going west to Oregon. Kirsten’s papa has just returned from a winter logging camp, and Kirsten’s baby sister is about to turn one year old. Kirsten will be eleven the month after. She misses seeing her cousins Lisbeth and Anna every day. But she knows that having their own home and land was her parents’ dream when they first set out for America, and Kirsten feels more at home than she ever has in the nearly two years since she came.
Let’s wake her up and see what she’s doing today.
#:)
