Little things save lives

As the six year point has passed since one of my closest friends committed sucide I've had some time to reflect. Its a little off topic from this blog but I figured I should share my thoughts. I don't often talk about my life in high school because of the hell it was for me. It sounds extremely stereotypical, because lets face it, high school is probably the worst place to be in someone's life. I went from having a group of friends and aspirations, to slowly losing the ones close to me to suicide and my parents telling that art was no way to get a living. For two or three years I went through my life prentending to be something I was not. I was lucky to have friends who were still close enough to me to help pull me out of that rut before I lost myself forever. The thing that saved me from ending it all though were some very special books. Everyone talks about how inspiring Harry Potter can be or the many other franchise books my generation grew up in, but two titles stood out to me the most. One day I was given a book called the perks of being a wallflower, and that was what started me on the right track. If you've never read it I highly recommend it. There's this scene that always makes me cry in there because I remember the hope it gave me that life does get better; Charlie is in the tunnel with his new found friends, a song comes on and while it plays and he's realizing these people really are his friends he tells them he feels infinite. It gave me the hope that I could go somewhere with my work. The other title I found in high school was The Hobbit. I don't think I can do justice trying to explain what this book did for me. The best way I could put it is that I was just like Bilbo Baggins, and his journey made me realize that just because I wander through life with no discernible purpose, doesn't mean I am lost. It touched my life so much that I have a tattoo dedicated to the book so for whatever reason if it isn't in my reach I can look at it and be reminded. Bilbo found himself on that adventure, just like I found myself in a way I never thought I would. Sometimes I wish I figured it out sooner, but then I wouldn't be the person I am today. Take time to appreciate the things in your life, and I hope that you find something that touches your life as much as these books did mine. Life is difficult and I hate sounding like everyone else when I say it gets better, but it truly does. Whenever I feel lost again, I reach for these books and I'll spend the whole night reading them, taking in every word and remembering why I am here. Don't let anyone tell you that there is no purpose, I am here telling you that there is something, and even if you don't figure it out now, that its ok. No one is worthless and they should never have to feel that way.
