In response to “The Kiss” by Gustav klimt:
The lovers kneel gently amongst the flowers,
golden robes draped across the floor as they hold eachother in a tender embrace
I wonder who he thought of when he made this
An old lover, a couple he saw on the street...
Maybe he imagined no one at all.
Maybe this was his idea of love
Maybe this was his feeling of love. How can one know?
He made it so grand, so colourful. He chose gold to swirl amongst the flowers. He sat with glue and a brush
applied that gold so meticulously- so carefully. How could he not have been so overwhelmed by adoration and affection
I like to imagination that it’s a cross section of his heart.

Curiosity- The artists
I also tried to bring in the perspectives of actual artists and how they thought about creating art and what it meant to them. As I don’t actually know any artists, here’s a bunch of quotes:
How you draw is a reflection of how you feel about the world. You’re not capturing it, you’re interpreting it.
-Juliette Aristides
A work of art which did not begin in emotion is not art.
-Paul Cezanne
Art is a line around your thoughts.
-Gustav Klimt
If people only knew how hard I work to gain my mastery. It wouldn’t seem so wonderful at all.
-Michelangelo

Curiosity- The non artists
In my attempt to understand how different people view art I asked a handful of people to describe art in a few sentences. However, I made sure the group of people I asked were all non visual artists.
 My roommate Natasha:
Art is our impression of reality that is used to provide people with their own subjective interpretations of what the world is like.
Hari (Natasha’s boyfriend butting in while I asked her):
Art doesn’t necessarily have to be something that exists, but it’s always a conception of an idea put into some sort of beautiful form.
My friend Matt:
Art for me is a way for people to use show imagination in physical form, its also a way for people to express feelings
My friend Cooper:
Without art, life would be very boring. I feel like art is the 'why' to my life, especially as a writer. I think anything can be art with enough intention and enough commentary.

Stimulus
After spending the summer working on a novel, I’ve admittedly been suffering with a hefty dose of writer’s block. In an attempt to remedy this, I tried writing about things that are new to me.
I wrote about how I imagined it would feel to travel to italy. I wrote about what I thought croissants would taste like (I can’t eat gluten, which is simply a tragedy).  I wrote about how it felt to sing on stage, and even went so far as to try karaoke for the first time and very much learnt that I do not like karaoke.
After much frustration, I decided to return to something more familiar to me: painting. I took a trip to Ukama art gallery at Granville island with my boyfriend. You see, since I have a lifetime of art experience and have always been praised for my technical skill when painting, I’m very critical of art when I see it. I have a hard time appreciating a painting when I see technical flaws. On the flip side, my boyfriend knows, pardon my language, jackshit about art.
As we walked around, I became intrigued by the way he described the paintings we saw. While I would look up close and observe the way the artists used there medium, or stand back and assess the overall composition, my boyfriend would point at stuff and proclaim how cool things were or how he thought the giraffes in one painting looked high. It was in that moment, I found something I’d like to write about:
The eye of the beholder
