“Oh…” The brunette offered him a small smile. “It’s that kind of impression you want to make.” Sara couldn’t help but chuckle softly, brushing her bangs away from her eyes. Her gaze went to him, he looked younger than her… but in this country, Sara knew better than to just assume things about people. It was something she had learned. Are you alright? Well. No. Not really, but she would be… someday. “I’m fine…” She chuckled nervously, before pressing her lips together and faking a small smile. “Nothing to worry about. But umm… let’s see what we can scoop for you. Are you planning a romantic dinner of some sort?” She asked casually, before motioning her head, telling him to follow her.
Once they reached the freezer of pre-cooked meals, Sara motioned her hand towards the vast selection of pre-cooked pasta. “These take absolutely no talent at all to make. They’re pretty much time-management only. And then, we can pick a nice sauce to mix them with, a good bottle of wine and you’re good to go.”
Tumblr media
Emile didn’t believe her for one moment but he’d remain at peace with it. He had no desire to mend a stranger’s heart in a supermarket. It was enough that he didn’t exploit her vulnerability which was all too common for Emile in his life before Astoria. They were all equals here in Astoria even though Emile hardly felt that rang true. “Of some sort, yes,” Emile confirmed leaving his response vague. There were certain elements of romance that bled into a feeding but it was all superficial.
“Thank you I’ll look into this,” Emile said showing gratitude for her suggested. He wouldn’t look into it any further though. He had absolutely no desire to do any sort of cooking for this person. He wanted them gone after a feeding almost immediately so he wouldn’t be tempted to go in for more. Dead bodies were significantly harder to hide in Nova Pangaea. All he aimed to do was send his donors off with something better than a chocolate chip cookie and Dixie cup’s worth of orange juice that was given at the community’s beloved blood bank.
He reached into the freezer case and pulled out a bag of prepared pasta and glanced at the ingredients. “You take care of yourself, alright? Thanks again,” he repeated finally letting the woman get back to whatever it was that brought her into the store to begin with.

open starter ~ * @astoriastarter
Gun had the night off and he had realized that the night market was going to be that night, so he decided to check it out. Of course, there was already a ton of people and to be quite honest, if he was gonna mellow out and hang out with his community he would need a few drinks in him.
A few turned into several and before he knew it he was feelin’ a buzz and walking around the sitting area looking for somewhere to have a seat. For a moment he felt happy, but then all those buried emotions started to bubble up. He furrowed his brow and cleared his throat, more of a nervous tick to help get rid of the feelings. He looked up and realized that someone had been standing there, “I’m sorry, did you say something?” he asked and then nervously laughed a little. “Got lost in my own head for a moment,” he let out briefly.
Tumblr media
“I asked if you found a necklace here,” Emile repeated himself. He wasn’t surprised that it took a try or two to get through to a werewolf. He was just glad they weren’t near a full moon to have the other get snippy with him. “I was sitting here not too long ago and have lost a bag I’d been carrying,” he went on to explain.
Emile rarely attended community events. In fact, he despised them. There were always crowds and rarely did they have any appeal to Emile, night market included. Still, he made it a point to attend this one. His sponsor in the VSP told him it was important he became an active member of the community and it would only put him in good graces with the right people if he made the effort. It was a hoop that Emile didn’t mind jumping through though it was proving to be a wash for him having lost one of the few purchases he made.

“Um…” Leon looked around. His brain was definitely still slowly processing where he was and where everything good really was, so it took him a few extra heartbearts to continue speaking. “I guess that depends on what you want? Like… fancy stuff or um…” He then closed his eyes, snapping his fingers as if trying to remember a key word that was on the tip of his tongue—but in korean. “Like–good? Delicious!” There you go. “Like, delicious, stuff your face and make you want to die kind of thing?”
Tumblr media
“Fancier would be preferred,” Emile confirmed. “Money isn’t really an issue,” he insisted. As someone who didn’t eat he had no problem splurging on the finer things for the people he kept around who did. He had an image to uphold after all and it was already a battle being taken seriously permanently frozen in his early twenties. “I think somewhere in the middle. I don’t need a full meal. Just something that’ll make me a good host and can tide them over until they get home,” he explained.

eriksnow‌:
Erik rarely cooked for himself so his refrigerator was spotless clean and, for the most part, empty. He did pick up a few things every now and then on his way home from work. Even if he never purchased his wine or hard liquor at the supermarket, on very desperate, last-resort moments, he found himself walking down the cold cuts aisle with the most decent bottle of red he could find. He was paying no attention to his surroundings, squinting as he turned over the commercial brie wheel in his hands. He needed to make a note to himself to pick fresh products at the farmer’s market next weekend.
His thoughts interrupted by the question, he looked quickly from prepacked salami an prosciutto and the young man holding it. Erik studied his face for a moment, a quick collection of thoughts and quiet assessments already cataloging the stranger in true, purely scientific manner. “You may want to visit the deli section instead. It’s fresher.” As if on queue, Erik, already deciding to take the brie he had been looking at, reached for the very same pack the vampire was holding. “I, on the other hand, am not trying to impress anyone so it’s a good choice.”
Tumblr media
Emile’s interest was instantly piqued. There was an air of danger that surrounded vampires that anyone even slightly privy to what he was would err on the side of caution. He’d never had a stranger grab for something out of his hand. This man was bold or naive and truthfully both were intriguing to the young vampire.
“Are you the type that likes to be wooed then?” Emile asked not trying to hide the flirtation as he relinquished the pack of meat to the other. The innuendos that could be deduced from the action hadn’t been lost on Emile. He had arrangements for later in the week that still remained true but patience was not a virtue Emile had learned despite no longer being rushed by the sands of time. He was a lover of and and if he could have his desserts later and his desserts now he might as well pursue it.

minxsara‌:
——Standing there, staring at the condiment aisle for far too long, Sara was reminded of one of her favorite poems from a book Moonbin had gifted her a couple of years ago and the vivid memory caused her heart to hurt inside her chest. He hated it–when loneliness and sadness came in waves, causing her eyes to well up in the middle of the supermarket when all she had to do was to buy some snacks to enjoy a lonely night by herself, since Binnie’s grandparents asked if they could look after him for the day.
Wiping off her cheeks, the petite brunette stormed away from that aisle and stepped into the one she knew there would be snacks. A voice and a question made her break out of her trance and Sara shook her head, as if to jolt herself back into reality. “Um… I don’t think snacks would be that much impressive, but maybe try grabbing the nacho chips and instead of buying dips, you could try and make your own?”
Tumblr media
Emile sensed that there was something glum about the woman before he even looked over at her. Still he appreciated her answer though it wasn’t one Emile would considered. As a human he’d never been much of a cook and he wasn’t going to pick up the habit now. Convenience foods were Emile’s speed but he still might switch gears and go for something like chips and dip instead of artisan meats as per her suggestion. “My culinary skills wouldn’t impress anyone,” he insisted as he set the tray back down in it’s refrigerated case and finally glanced at the other.
She was puffy eyed and radiated a warmth that only came from being worked up by emotions. It wasn’t a common sight for a grocery store. Most people were able to hold themselves together in such a public setting. Easy prey. The thought left his mind as soon as it was formed. He didn’t have prey anymore only donors. Only donors. It was the one sacrifice he was willing to make and one of the hardest he upheld. “Are you alright?” Emile asked showing compassion that was greatly aided by his natural vampiric charm.

——For someone who had changed his entire life so he wouldn’t have to deal with the dead, they were certainly following him anywhere he went. It sucked the damn energy out of him, to see them–hear them… no matter how hard Leon tried to ignore them. So, as soon as he got home from work, Leon lit up a blunt to try and get himself to relax, but all it did, was to make him fall asleep on his couch and wake up feeling like he hadn’t ate in the last fifty years, so, there he was, staring blankly at the vast selection of Kettle chips, trying to decide which ones to buy, before heading to the bakery section of the supermarket because–why not?
“Um…” Leon took in a deep breath, as if waking up from his own thoughts, still rather lethargic from his adventures in calming himself down. “I think pretty much here isn’t that much impressive, but—” He picked up a box of red velvet cupcakes and handed it to his neighbor. “These might do the trick… You having company over?”
Tumblr media
Emile took the box of cupcakes and tilted them so he could take a look at the ingredients. They were full of dyes and additives that didn’t make a person’s blood particularly delectable but he supposed he’d be giving them them after he was done with his donor so it didn’t matter that much to him and he slipped the box of cupcakes in with his other miscellaneous odds and ends.
“I am later this week,” Emile confirmed. “I just don’t make it a habit to frequent the grocery store so I figured I might as well get a few things to have on hand,” he explained. It made people more comfortable in a vampire’s home when they were able to find some of their basic necessities. He was well aware of society’s push to strip him of his vampirism but that wasn’t a battle he fought in his own home. He’d still keep a water filter in his fridge and deodorant in his medicine cabinet strictly for appearance. “I still think I want more than cupcakes on hand. What else would you suggest?” Emile pressed his neighbor. The scent of cannabis that lingered on Leon’s lips hadn’t gone unnoticed and while his choices might not be the healthiest in this mindset at least Emile knew he’d be making tasty ones.

It was a brief stop at the crystal shop and after that, a few minutes inside the Independent Supermarket. She needed to buy a few things on her list, in case she was actually calling a friend to head to her place so they could chat over a glass of wine. And for that to happen, a bottle of wine was definitely needed. She was walking aimlessly thourhg the aisles searching for the wine section and the vegetables section, when she ended up listening to the question. Noticing a few seconds before that the man was talking to her.
Looking at the board, she moved her attention back at the young woman when she finally had some advice to share. “Truth being told, I don’t eat most of what’s here, but the cheese is absolutely amazing, perhaps brie? Or gouda? With red wine is the perfect combination, a Pinot Noir if you’re searching for recommendations.“ She shrugged while her eyes were. “I think that just by trying to do something to impress them, it’ll count. At least, I’d like something like that.”
Tumblr media
Emile appreciated the woman’s suggestions. “A Pinot Noir you say?” Emile repeated to make sure he’d heard her correctly as he casted his direction back towards the alcohol section. That would be a wise wise purchase to make. He wasn’t going to offer up Everclear currently in his basket to a human. That’d be a recipe for disaster.
“I want them to actually have something to sustain them,” he insisted. He wasn’t going to lay his intentions out in the open to a complete stranger but he wanted to make sure that when his donor left they had a full belly and wouldn’t risk the other fainting on him as they left his home. He had his sponsor relatively fooled that he’d been living off blood from the bank and he’d like to keep it that way. “Would a nice pizza be better?”

mercyovalles‌:
Food shopping was the one thing that Mercy had to force herself to do. If it’d been up to her, she’d order out every night. Astoria surely had enough restaurants for it. But of course, it wasn’t an option. Not only wasn’t it the most unhealthy option, but also a horrible choice when it came to finances. Couldn’t really re-build her savings if she was ordering out every night, could she? Thus, here she was. Practically dragging her feet across the isles, cellphone in hand as she looked up recipes and their ingredients.
Mercy had only been browsing the isles, stopping to look at the array of boards out of nothing but curiosity. It’s the sound of a stranger’s voice that immediately pulls her attention away, light eyes resting on the other. The question itself earned a shrug from her,  “I mean, it could be. Never really tried it before, but there don’t seem to be anythin’ but meat and cheese. So, you can’t really go wrong.” She paused, “Unless they’re vegetarians then that’s a whole other issue.”
Tumblr media
Emile hadn’t thought about that. He assumed they weren’t vegetarian but it was hard to tell these days. He felt like everyone had their own unique dietary restraint. Some people seemed to eat nothing but meat and cheese while others detested the stuff all in a universe where culinary monstrosities were advertised at every fast food joint. “Hmm, I don’t believe they’re vegetarian but I’m not sure, you make a good point,” Emile said. The last thing he wanted was for it to go wasted and the tiny smattering of rosemary almonds and pitted olives probably wouldn’t be enough to sustain a vegetarian after a feeding.
“What would you suggest instead as something a little more dietarily friendly?” Emile further inquired. “What would you want to be served on a night in?” Her tastes were probably as good as any other’s so he saw no harm in taking the fit, pretty woman’s suggestions.

Location: Independent Supermarket
When:  Monday, 10:21 PM
@astoriastarter
A vampire’s shopping basket was always an interesting sight. Without the need to eat Emile rarely made a trip unless it was to pick up odds and ends for his home on his way back from a shift at the theater which was why Emile found himself at Independent that evening. So far a bottle of Everclear, box of pens, some batteries, and popcorn kernals sat in the bottom of his basket as he roamed the aisles. The technicolored packets of junk food that lined his path no longer caught his eye like they had decades ago. Instead he was drawn to the few shoppers milling about for some late night necessities. An O- in the frozen department, an AB and B+ couple inconspicuously shopping the contraceptives aisle, and an A- cashier all caught his attention more than any new flavor of potato chip could.
Emile kept his distance as he killed more of his infinite amount of time and stumbled into the artisan food section. He rarely kept food in the house (hence the very shelf stable popcorn) but he did have a feeding lined up later this week and he decided he might as well pick up food for them now to save him from another unenjoyable trip to the supermarket. Emile reached for one of the pre-made charcuterie boards and examined it. Food lost it’s appeal long ago and he wasn’t even sure something like this was enjoyable.
“Are these any good?” Emile asked as he felt someone encroach on the section he was lingering in. “I’ve never had one but I’m trying to impress someone,” he went on to explain. As a human he’d never been drawn to fancy food like this but as a vampire there was a level of elegance he wanted to uphold.

EMILE LIPKIN
AGE: Twenty-three years old (55)
BIRTHDAY: October 28th, 1965
GENDER: Male
OCCUPATION: Projectionist at Empire Cinema
PLACE OF BIRTH:  Eugene, OR
NEIGHBORHOOD: Ashville
HAS LIVED IN ASTORIA FOR: 5 months
BIOGRAPHY
Emile was never meant to be turned. In fact, he never even yearned for immortality when he sought out the supernatural. A goth who took his interest in the macabre too far found himself in the hands of a vampire who didn’t seem to mind keeping a human donor around. He was a willing sacrifice and the desire to serve kept him in good graces with the immortal being.
All of that changed Christmas Eve of 1988. Perhaps it had been the spirit of the season, or just another way to keep young Emile hooked on the vampire but he was given an addictive taste of just what his willing donation fueled and was a gesture Emile accepted graciously. The taste of the vampire’s blood still remains a vile memory of regret in his mouth. Emile was sent away from the vampire’s den to reunite with his family for the holiday. A slip on black ice, which should’ve been tragically fatal, ended up resulting in Emile waking in a pool of blood that had no defined exit wound. Startled, disoriented, and unable to understand the burning inside of him Emile bound home unaware he would make the second grave mistake of the night.
Even eternally damned to suffer with the memory of the slaughtering of the three family members awaiting his return the incident remains a blur in Emile’s mind as it cruelly cemented his fate. Control had always been a weakness of Emile’s through humanity and there was no stopping the supernatural primal need to feast. Covered in blood with the inability to cry for those he had loved Emile rushed to the vampire who was in horror of what he’d done and quickly uprooted them. They had never intended to create a monster of his own and was now indebted to the once human who had been more or less a pet.
Emile’s formative years as a new vampire were torturous. The already reclusive pair was forced further into the shadows and kept from prying eyes. Often times when Emile’s newborn blood lust was too high he was restrained and locked away to keep from outing the pair. It was excruciating and bonded the pair in a dynamic neither one had predicted. He was his lover, his mentor, his provider, and his confidant. After his transformation he became his entire world and Emile saw himself in tow forever that is until the night they did not return. Emile waited until sunrise and then sundown again and again until it became clear the vampire would not return having been caught and butchered by hunters.
Alone in the world and terrified of the fate he was sure to succumb to Emile drove himself to near starvation. He was horrified of his blood lust and his lack of control and isolated himself deep in the woods surviving on the few unlucky souls who ventured too far off the beaten path until his trek deeper and deeper away from the world. He’d been cautioned that Nova Pangaea was not quite the safe haven it’s cracked up to be. That for vampires the rules in place made it as unbearable as the rest of the world. But without the vampire Emile was a loyal acolyte to he felt he had no choice but to head for Astoria. The only place he could find solace in not receiving a similar fate to his progenitor.
