two hours after.

The chime signaling 6 pm rang throughout the rain soaked city.

（Man, it's late. I wonder if Yuzu's worried....)

The black haired girl carrying a blue umbrella quickly went on her way home. She is Ichigo's younger sister, Kurosaki Karin. She thought of going home while it was still bright out, but while playing games at a friend's house, it had turned completely dark.

「...Hm?」

Nearing the Karakura High School road, she faintly felt a familiar presence.

What came to mind was the silver haired boy who once helped them with soccer.

「Toshiro! Are you here?」

She called as she went off the road, going into the wet forest. Without regard for her favorite sneakers getting dirty, she continued deeper into the forest.

「Cold...」

As the presence felt stronger, the temperature was dropping.  Her hand holding the umbrella (handle) trembled. 

「...There!」

Clutching the beat up mantle the masked man wore, Hitsugaya was there, lying down, buried in the grass. Around was the blood flowing from Hitsugaya, melting, forming a red puddle.

Karin immediately let go of the umbrella, ran up to him and went to shake Hitsugaya's shoulder.

「Toshiro! What happened?!」

No reaction.

She turned Hitsugaya over who was lying face down, and put her hand near his mouth.

(Thank God... He's breathing.)

With a heave-ho, Karin piggy-backed the slightly shorter than her Hitsugaya, and stood up. They went down the muddy slope carefully. Hitsugaya's shihakusho was frozen in many places, and with every step, sounds of ice cracking and breaking can be heard.

As the lights of the Kurosaki Clinic came into sight, Hitsugaya, on her back, stirred.

「Kusa...ka...」

He whispered, his face contorted in pain.

「...Kusaka? What the hell is that?」

Even with Karin's (repeated) inquiry, Hitsugaya did not speak a word.

It was a different day when Hitsugaya woke up on the bed in Ichigo's room. He blinked a number of times, clearing his vision.

The ceiling, light, window, desk.

It was a room he's seen before, visiting the human world with the Hitsugaya vanguard troop.

The light is yet to be switched on, with the only light source coming from the light from the corridor, spilling through a slight opening of the door, making the room dim.

「Ugh... ngh...」

Hitsugaya grimaced in pain while in bed, his upper body coming to life. The wound on his abdomen hurt. Checking his abdomen and bodily state, he noticed his captain haori was gone, and his shoulder to chest was covered in bandages.

「Hey.」

He raised his head at the voice, and there, Ichigo was standing outside the door.

「Kurosaki...」

「You were passed out around here, Karin carried you and brought you in.」 Ichigo said while entering the room, sitting down, and looking at Hitsugaya.

「The mangled mantle you had and your haori, they're folded right here. And your sword, it's right there.」

Hitsugaya's eyes followed to the places Ichigo had pointed out. The mantle and haori on top of the desk, and Hyourinmaru beside it, each in its own place.

「I see. ....My bad.」

Hitsugaya's pale figure due to loss of large amounts of blood, seemed to pale even more in the dark.

「The onmitsukido was searching for you.」

「Yeah.」

「What do you mean, just "yeah"?!」

He met the pissed off Ichigo's line of sight, and Hitsugaya hung his head down.

「What are you hiding?」

He stared at his hands, linked together on his lap.

「.....I have troubled you. I give you my thanks.」

Hitsugaya looked down, and avoids the question.

「Why the hell did you try to go alone? What are you brooding over?」

Ichigo pressed on.

「What the hell is "Kusaka"?」

Hitsugaya heard it, and in surprise, raised his head.

「Where did you...」

「Karin told me about it. You were having a nightmare, and mumbled that, she said.」

Karin, who carried Hitsugaya, and went home covered in blood, rain, and mud, tired and on the verge of passing out, called Ichigo and told him it was a word he said.

「What do you mean, "Kusaka"? Is it a person's name? Is it related to the person who stole the Ouin, the one you were chasing after?」

Hitsugaya silently shut his eyes, responding to the rapid succession of questions.

「.....It's the name of someone who was killed.」

「Killed...? By whom?」

HitsuKarin had/has so much potential, it’s not even funny.

Their names complement each other. The Hitsugaya surname means “winter valley”. Karin’s name means “summer pear”. Hitsugaya can be associated with “cold”, while Karin with “hot”.

Their colors also complement each other. Hitsugaya’s eyes are teal, whereas Karin’s eyes are a dark grey. Hitsugaya’s hair is white, while hers is black. His skin tone is tanned, & hers is creamy. He can be associated with the color blue, & Karin with the color red (she does like the color).

They’re both calm, serious, brave, & strong. Usually the most level-headed ones when with others.

Both have a temper when provoked. Will speak out if necessary. May shout.

Both have shown their caring & protective sides, as well as wanting to help others.

Both like some form of nature. Hitsugaya likes to be outside looking up at the sky, whether it’s at the stars or the sunset. Karin likes to play outside in the daytime.

Both are looked up to. As captain of his division, Hitsugaya is a leader & is well-respected by his subordinates, even though he’s far younger than them. Karin’s group of friends all seem to admire her & follow her lead, even though they’re all boys.

Both have a sister/sister figure they’re completely different from, but get along just fine. Karin has Yuzu, while Hitsugaya has Hinamori.

Both have a family member/figure who constantly ticks them off & the like. Karin with Isshin, Hitsugaya with Matsumoto.

They are also the youngest out of their respective families/family figures. Karin is actually the youngest Kurosaki (according to one of the databooks & mentioned in Bleach Brave Souls[1], Yuzu is the older twin), while Hitsugaya is the youngest out of his family figures. 

The differences in their personalities & activities also complement each other. While Hitsugaya is more on the serious, “uptight” side, Karin is feisty/fiery & outgoing. While he is often working, Karin is chilling. While he likes to take naps (according to the Bleach databooks), Karin likes to play her fav sport or video games.

Not too sure if Hitsugaya’s been shown to be feared or not (not including the time before he was a Soul Reaper when the kids around him all feared him due to his large reiatsu, “cold” personality, & looks), but people probably don’t want to mess with a prodigy captain who was said to eventually surpass new Captain-Commander Kyoraku in a 100 yrs (said by Kyoraku himself). Karin’s friend, Midoriko Tono (who was only shown in the manga), seemed to often get on Karin’s bad side & showed panic when Karin had comically threatened her once.

Karin’s dad, Isshin, was the former captain of the 10th Division, while Hitsugaya had been his 3rd Seat before becoming the new captain.

In the official novel version of the 2nd Bleach movie, “The DiamondDust Rebellion: Another Hyorinmaru”, Karin is the one who finds an unconscious Hitsugaya in the forest & manages to take him to the family clinic. Hitsugaya had mumbled ‘King’s Seal’ deliriously & Karin let Ichigo know about this. Ichigo later tells Hitsugaya when he wakes up that it was Karin who brought him & asks him about those strange words. (Here’s the scene[2] I found of the novel in a Chinese translation. Here’s another site[3] that mentions it.) 

According to some Japanese websites (here’s one[4] for example), anime episode 132, “Hitsugaya, Karin, & Soccer Ball” had come from a draft suggested by Kubo. So it’s canon..?!! I still can’t even-

If that is so, then Hitsugaya also likes soccer, is good at it, & works well with Karin. He’s impressed by her high reiatsu & observes her, is protective of her (her friends & opposing team were irrelevant), plus, he lets her call him by his first name (which is surprising, since he doesn’t let anyone do so).

Does this mean that Kubo wanted to make a manga chapter of their meeting, but couldn’t because Shounen Jump, so he decided the anime could make it happen instead? Kubo HAD said in one or more interviews that there were MANY things he wanted to incorporate into his manga but never had the time or wasn’t allowed to. That’s why he probably suggested a few other things to the anime company that he wanted in the anime as well.

The fact Karin’s always been able to see ghosts & then started to see Hollows. Finding out about Ichigo’s secret. Her increasing reiatsu & powers (such as being able to see a soul’s memory, as was the case with the soul boy in the parakeet), & her having to go to Urahara for help & what he told her in chapter 428 - he said that if anything happened, he’d prepare what she needed (which we still don’t know what he meant unless it’s what we think). She said it was her turn to protect (the translation varies between wanting to protect her brother & protecting her family in general). Was this foreshadowing that Karin was going to have a bigger role in the manga? Was she maybe going to become a Soul Reaper? This is what we still want to know. (So she was going to encounter Hitsugaya either way).

After the 1+ year time skip, both of them aged “equally” (middle schoolers). Interesting, Kubo, interesting..

We got to see how they would look as adults… I can’t get over this ship-fanservice… SO GOOD-LOOKING & they match!! Interesting, Kubo, interesting..

So yeah, basically this ship is amazing, & had- HAS (screw it!!) so much potential. Forever ship this.

sometimes i think about the love is surrender monologue (it’s set to the kdrama goblin, which you can ignore) about that applies to hitsukarin, honestly. the vulnerability of love, the quiet build up of discarding their shields

something i don’t think i’ve ever been able to word quite right with how i see hitsukarin is that. i feel like they’d be very careful with each other’s hearts. on the surface, yeah, karin is upbeat and friendly, but i feel like she’s careful with her heart, because of the grief of masaki’s death, she’s… not good at being open. she put walls around herself to protect herself, as sweet as she is to yuzu, and as cautious as she is with ichigo. she gets angry and doesn’t explain herself to her friends, and… idk. i feel like it’s juxtaposed with the cheerfulness she has, because she’s young and still a bit naive, despite that jadedness, but i always found it quite easy to imagine that at fifteen, karin could be as surly as ichigo was, and guard their heart. so she’d be wary, and slow to fall.

and i feel like that’s the same with hitsugaya, to some degree. he’s so self-conscious, because of his youth, because of his relationship with hinamori, because of his past and being shunned by so many. he’s fixated on his reputation, and wants to be better, do better, but his own shortcomings catch him out every time. his temper gets the best of him time and time again. he finds it hard to make friends, and part of that is also because he’s a captain, but all his peers, all those captains, are just. so much older than him.

(bleach ends with toushirou much more comfortable around people, i feel, in that epilogue. and i do think, that does apply with karin too, breezily bringing coca cola, but that was dealt offpage much more, but even then, i still see them careful with their hearts.)

but that first hitsukarin episode, when karin just sees a kid, and treats him like just a normal person like her, even after she finds out that he’s a captain, i think, to some degree, he needs that sense of normalcy. for karin, she doesn’t need to hide that part of herself. for toushirou, he gets to experience a sort of unconditional friendship, karin doesn’t place any expectations on him on who he should be, and karin even gets tears in her eyes, confiding in toushirou. and i think it’s sweet that they get a second episode, maybe implying that they keep in touch or just: toushirou is in karakura town to help haru, and meets up with karin anyway. they open up to each other in a way they just don’t with other people.

i mean, they’re still careful with each other, but i just liked how they navigated their issues, and how much their friendship benefited each other from knowing each other. karin, the girl who hated anything spiritual, but got dragged into it, because she worried about her brother so much; doesn’t seem to hate ghosts so much after meeting toushirou. toushirou, the boy who tries to keep distance from people so they don’t think less of him, stays with karin and lets her stick around even though he’s a captain that’s using his holiday leave as an excuse to carry out his duties off-work and complains about it… doesn’t really do anything to avoid karin, when it would have been super easy for him to go to orihime and stay at her place like last time. it’s just. endearingly disarming that they meet at this crossroad. and continue to be drawn to each other afterwards.

so, love, an act of faith, and falling for each other, even though they have reasons to close themselves off. i just. love them.
