The Hand You're Dealt, draft one, chapter twenty-five (excerpt)
With feather-like fingers, Eleri brought the heavy dress over Maeve’s head, careful not to entangle her in it or pull her hair. Her fingers were nimble across Maeve’s back as she pulled the ribbons fast, lacing the black brocade together. She made as little contact with Maeve’s skin as was humanly possible, but the odd kiss of a fingertip on a shoulder or spine sent an electric shock down to Maeve’s very core. This was lust, of course. There was no denying (nor had she ever attempted denying) that Eleri was beautiful. Not in the most original or the most surprising of ways, but her symmetrical features, soft curves of cheeks over a slightly too angular a jaw, and her green eyes (like moss-covered stones in a woodland spring, they were) were a perfect union of everything Maeve had come to appreciate in Eleri, in flesh form. The quiet kindness with a little edge that she usually kept hidden - the hatred for her father always outshined by the warmth she had always had for everyone else - and a curious mixture of boldness and timidity. Yes, of course, this was lust. Eleri nudged her, a butterfly’s touch on the tops of her shoulders (she felt it all the way down to her knees), to turn her around and took her in with her eyes. Despite trying, Maeve couldn’t hold her gaze.

the feeling when, yes, you have managed to write a few thousand words in the past few days - having had a tough couple of months of writer's block - but then, you've hardly pushed the plot forward and this is just interactions between people and getting the gang together...
except, wait, isn't that what i should be writing in a found family scenario?? do people want to see the little everyday scenes or am i overdoing it???
this first draft may end up being a lot of filler with little substance
thank goodness, it's only the first draft

i had a very slow couple of months writing-wise - whether it was due to a lack of inspiration, or too much time i spent giffing star trek, or both, remains to be determined.
BUT, i have managed to get back on track, at least closer to the track anyway, and have added a couple thousand words in the last few days. progress, folks!
which means that maybe, possibly, i will finish this first draft in the foreseeable future.

ways to start writing more efficiently
stop writing with the word count on!
use a font like comic sans -- trick your brain into thinking that it's not important, that the writing can be stupid, if it's in a stupid font (if you can't tell i despise comic sans)
time yourself to get to a goal
or give yourself a certain amount of time
quantity >> quality in the first draft(s)!
jot down what you want to happen in that chapter
try organizing your writing (nanowrimo, for example)
do *not* reread! it doesn't need to make sense, it just needs to be there
try not to stick yourself to something you saw on tumblr. what works for someone else doesn't necessarily work for you!
take breaks. time those breaks.
practice writing short stories / oneshots of your characters.
try getting all your writing done within a certain goal (as much as I can for 30 minutes) rather than writing 5 minutes on or off
write down every little wormy idea that comes into your brain! sure, it's probably for a different plot, but maybe you can work it in somehow?
on that note, mash elements of your plots together rather than starting a whole new story
see maybe what little writing competitions you can submit your work to
proclaim your goal to the wide web for some peer pressure
rewards yourself. cheer on every thousand-word milestone. brag to your friends that you've written something, anything.
don't think of the big goal—don't think of publishing, or posting, etc. think of the end of your chapter, the development of your character, where it goes.
switch your writing environment! where are you most productive?
make a playlist only for when you write. never for anything else.
getting off tumblr, probably.
have people remind you of your goals.
remember that it all comes with discipline, but also your mental health is the most important!! don't sacrifice half your sleep to meet your nanowrimo goals. try to recognize when it's taking you too long and close the document. do something else. come back later.
take care of yourself. <3 use this post as a breather (or reminder to start!)

another monday, another cafe, another 800 words added to the first draft, chapter 17 is almost done.
currently, the hand you're dealt is ~65k words long, which i assumed at the start would be the minimum to tell the story. now, it's looking more like i need another 15-20k. the end of the year remains my deadline for writing the first draft.

today, i chose to write during my break from work, at one of the cosiest cafés/bookshops ever. i'm still struggling with getting a lot done in one sitting, especially considering where i am in the story (the dreaded Middle), but small steps forward are taken.

this is how writing was being done today, on probably one of the last warm days this year, in one of my favourite parks, over coffee and a chocolate chip cookie. i think i should do this every day, i met my daily goal in no time.
and an update: the hand you're dealt (first draft) is currently sixteen chapters long, at almost 60k words.
