Hi! I was just wondering if you used a specific skin shader on your last render? The skin detail is crazy good! I've been trying to figure out how to make skin look better in blender smh lol

thank you! i do plan on making an updated tutorial eventually that'll go more in depth, bc i think i'm better an explaining in video form than text, but i'll try to explain here!

so what i do is when the sim gets ripped, i take the diffuse map into photoshop (but really any photo editing software will work), and i make it grayscale and i change it from 8 bits per channel to 16. i just save as a png called "[insert sim name]_bump" or something

then in blender you can set up your material the usual way. i also rename this to be "[insert sim name]_base"

so now we need to make a new material for the skin! first hit the plus to create a new, blank material slot, then hit the little ball thing and select your base material. third, make sure you hit the two pages icon to duplicate that material, or else it'll affect everything. i named it skin.

now with your sim selected, hit tab to go into edit mode. on the side window where it was showing our material nodes, instead go to uv editor, and make sure you click those two arrows to turn on uv sync selection. that'll make things a lot easier.

i think the first time you enter edit mode in a project everything is select (i think lol), so you can hit alt-a to deselect. on sims 4 up maps, skin is always in the same place, so we want to click the head, the neck, and whatever else skin is exposed. select on the uv diffuse on the side pressing L to make sure you've got everything.

⬇ this is always where the sim's face, neck, and arms will be located on the uv map if exposed. it should have also lit up the sims skin in the main panel.

side tip!!!!!! when you get to this stage, go to mesh, clean up, and merge by distance. this will get rid of those weird barbie doll lines lol.

now with it all selected, make sure you have your skin material selected and hit assign. and that's the boring part done lmao

let's go back to our shader editor. hit shift-a and type bump. drag the normal to the normal in our principled shader. now hit shift-a again and type image texture. open the bump map you made, and set the color space to non-color! now drag color to height. it's going to look crazy it's ok lol you'll want to change the strength to be pretty low.

roughness on the principled shader affects how shiny the skin is. i wanted this render to have very shiny skin, so i have the roughness really low. the value will depend on whatever look ur going for.

last, we want to set up the subsurface scattering. a good starting point for the subsurface on sims is .03. it can go lower or higher depending on the sim, whatever looks more natural. for the color, to preserve the color of the eyebrows, i drag the base color into the color, then create a new hue saturation node between it, crank it to 2, and make the hue .45 (this'll make it more blood-like). on eevee

also if it's in eevee, for subsurface, you have to scroll down and toggle on subsurface translucency which is very dumb imo lmao. in cycles it'll be good to go

and that's all i do! hope this helps! again, i am not confident at all in my written tutorial abilities, so there will be a video tutorial eventually if this is terrible lmao

Omg I just have reached 500 followers on tumblr and I’m so happy! Thank you all guys so much for clicking that button and trusting me to keep working on random doodles till this day. I joined tumblr just a month ago and I never thought It would be like this, I get asks everyday and I have made lots of friends over these few weeks and overall having lots of fun.
