I’ve got a question. Does anybody know what causes this discoloration in bones when they are in the maceration/degreasing bucket? This has happened to me with every project. It’s not a big deal, I know how to whiten them back to normal. But I don’t want to know how to fix it, I want to know what causes it. Is it preventable?

Cleaned the cat skull!
now to degrease, whiten, and glue her back together. Didn’t realize that dried on skin was keeping the skull together haha (also the hole in the skull was very alarming but I’m still nearly certain this poor thing was the victim of a car collision)

Another Chaffinch complete!
During the winter populations of Chaffinch increase due to an influx of migrants from Fennoscandia but with that comes a potential sharp decline of our native Chaffinch.
Trichomonisis is a disease affecting Chaffinch health which can affect movement and ultimately can lead to the death of the bird. It causes damage to the digestive tract and is spread through saliva. White substances can be seen around the beak, throat and crop. It renders them unable to eat or breathe.
Unfortunately its not just Chaffinch at risk other Finches such as Greenfinch have been greatly affected but even the House Sparrow too. Other species like Pigeons and even Blackbirds suffer from it too.

After a good scrub and a 24 hour soak in soapy water, I was gonna degrease these more but I like the color a lot on these. I’m still gonna toss these in hydrogen peroxide to ensure they’re extra clean but I’m not worried about getting these as white as possible haha. Cant wait to make some art pieces with these

Found another opossum on a walk today. Why am I finding so many dead opossums lately?
It's gross and I was a mile from my house, so I did not take it. I might check on it in a week or so.

Horse Hoof Bones! These are the coffin bone ( aka distal phalanx ) which is the bone inside a horse's hoof, the short pastern bone ( aka second phalanx ) and the long pastern bone ( aka the first phalanx ). Really neat specimen to use for reference.
