@ everyone criticizing erasmus as a character and talking ab how much they hate him, i offer u my take. i think that erasmus is INTENDED to make the audience uncomfortable. we, the readers, don’t share the same beliefs towards slavery as our narrator (damen). the reason erasmus’ ending with torveld and his entire existence as a slave reads so nonchalantly and voyeuristically is because we’re in DAMENS head. this guy comes from a country that’s been practicing slavery since always. ofc he views this blond slave in such a sexualized manner. ofc erasmus being out of the hands of the oh so cruel veretian court and instead falling into the arms of a ‘respectable’ aristocrat like torveld is viewed in a positive light. just bc damen’s a slave for a hot min doesn’t change his entire outlook and perception on slavery. he’s still super biased and flawed and that’s why erasmus reads this way.
