Jorge Gonzalez, suffered a broken neck, and a compressed spine at the hands of 3 sheriff deputies in Texas. He couldn’t even hold his head up for this mugshot…so they had to hold it up for him. They actually thought the mugshot was more important than a hospital visit.
After a deputy tripped him he hit his face hard and went unconscious. They tased him couple of times “to wake him up”.
He was left paralyzed neck down, went through a series of surgeries, and was in ICU on the ventilator for over a month after the arrest.
According to the hospital he went over 26 hours in Hidalgo County jail without necessary medical attention that could have saved his life.

Movie director: what if instead of casting 20-30 year olds to play teenagers in movies, causing actual teens to feel inadequate in their bodies because they don’t look at all like a fully grown adult with toned abs or big boobs, we cast actual teenagers?
Hollywood: like. Having underage teenagers? Actual fifteen-sixteen year olds to play fifteen-sixteen year olds?
Director: yeah?
Hollywood: But... filming underage people emulating sex is illegal or something. We wouldn’t be able to make the near-explicit sex scenes.
Director: well um. Maybe we could make a teen movie without near-explicit sex scenes? Maybe one about coming of age experiences such as first parties, first kisses, connecting with a best friend, doing stupid shit just because a friend bet you couldn’t... y’know, teenage stuff.
Hollywood, sweating bullets: what the fuck are you talking about?????

While I’m rereading Les Miserables (and while rewatching the War & Peace miniseries), I just want to say, I think the way our culture puts certain books on pedestals as “great literature” makes them seem really scary and impenetrable. People think, “I’m not an aristocratic intellectual who buys very expensive artisanal cheese. I can’t possibly read a book like War and Peace.”
But War and Peace is just a story. It’s long and it’s old and it’s set in a different country, but it’s just a story about a few families and their weird love triangles over time. And it’s a darn good story. I think the intimidating reputation of these books makes people forget that they have a plot and characters and dialogue like any other entertaining book and not just endless words and pages and themes to analyze. Something about the way we are taught to approach literature scares us away.
Honestly, most of these big 19th century novels turn out to be more engrossing, have more relatable and loveable characters, and contain more humor than I was expecting. I read and reread Les Miserables because it’s fun and interesting, not because it pairs well with artisanal cheese. I think you should give it a try if you haven’t!

Tip:
When it comes to stuff like racism, sexism, homophobia, etc, I’ve found it’s usually way better to think to yourself ‘I don’t want to be’ than ‘I’m not’.
I.e. if someone goes ‘that thing you just did is ableist’, instead of going ‘I’m not ableist, I don’t hate disabled people!’ it’s usually a lot better to go ‘I don’t want to be ableist, I should rethink what I’m doing/saying/etc in light of that fact’. Because that shifts your thinking so rather than jumping straight into denial and attempts to defend your character, you’re instead more inclined to look at how your actions could be misrepresenting your intentions. Or whether you’ve overlooked something, been callous, or acted in ignorance.

Not diagnosing a child doesn't mean they won't notice they're different. It just means that instead of thinking "I'm struggling because I have autism/adhd/anxiety/depression/schizophrenia", they will just conclude that they are struggling because they are stupid, weak, annoying, unlovable, etc.
