This was a very joinery intense kitchen island build. Since I had so many planks of Oak joined facing upward, there would be a lot of wood movement horizontally. To counter that I made an intricate sliding dovetail batten construction which also held the top down but not connected directly to the oak.
The Oak was hand planed, ebonized, lightly burnished back and then waxed. The top consists of Elm.
This project was a real head scratcher, but turned out really well.
The design is all on me ;)

I made this play ladder for our son. I was too cheap to buy one, so I made it myself ( I should have bought one, it would have been a lot cheaper....).
Made out of Oak with a hand plane finish of course.

This is one of my favorite Ming dynasty apron/leg joineries. I had wanted to make this one for a long time. I will be trying some equally intricate Chinese joints soon, so keep a lookout for those if you are someone who enjoys joinery like myself :)
For all who are interested, I have a video on Youtube detailing the making of this joint.

I built this table for Laura Maasry. This was her personal design and a great one at that. I just tweaked the joinery and dimensioning a bit and built it for her. It was a challenge to get the order of operations on point, but it all worked out in the end.
The table is made of Walnut and finished with natural Auro wax.

It has been a very long time since I uploaded something, so I thought I would do some updating on tumblr. I have been on tumblr a lot, but never really felt like uploading, since the mobile app was garbage.
This is a play stand I built for our son about two years ago (it really has been long!). It has since also been a great play thing for our daughter as well.
Maple wood with some half laps and mortise and tenon joinery. Kanna finish is a given.

Here is a traditional Chinese grindstone. The wooden base was designed by a Chinese architect. I built, handplaned the construction and waxed it. The form was so odd, I had to build a jig for gluing it up. The crank has ball bearings for a longer life. The original cranks would just have a round peg acting as a pivot. In my opinion that would have worn down too fast.
The grindstone is used for soybeans. The shop in Berlin using the construction is called Huadou and sells tofu

It's been a long time since I posted.
Here is a Børge Mogensen inspired table in Hard Maple for a client. I updated all the joinery so no metal fasteners were needed. I had to cut the roundover on the ends of the feet by hand because I didn't have the right knives for the shaper. Woodworking and stuff...
All in all a very fun build.

Some planemaking I did shortly before our son was born a year ago (time flies!). The Small Bubinga hira kanna is so useful, I will order small blades from Imai san in Kyoto and make some more small kanna.

This is one of the many Chinese three way miters. Very complex, but also very rewarding! The original is slightly splayed and part of a Ming dynasty wardrobe. This one was not splayed, thank god!

This was a demountable travel table I built for a client who saw the ebonized oak table I made. He also wanted to have the lip around the table to stop things rolling off. Definitely a fun small build.
I also made a video of the construction:

I had a job for the ETH school in Zürich. They have a material collection department, which is very interesting.
They hosted an exhibition about joinery and building with wood.
I made a total of 26 joints in siberian Larch with pristine quality. It really was a joy to work!
I learned a lot of new carpentry joints, which I will make in Maple in due time for the Joint Venture series on Youtube.

I built this table for a client before I went to Japan in December. It was super fun to build, so much joinery! The table top is a mitered frame and panel with a dovetailed baton on the bottom for structural integrity of the large panel. The feet are tenoned into planks, which are in turn dadoed into the table top frame. I hand planed the whole thing, as per usual, and also planed the legs and stretchers round. The legs look and feel very nice because of the facets left by the straight bladed kanna. Also, I don’t own a lathe 😂.

I made myself a new chouna handle with a London Plane branch that I found. The handle texture is grippy and stable!

This is a prototype chair I made in some beautiful fine grained Larch from Siberia. The design had been floating around in my head for a couple of years and now and I finally had the time to build the first iteration. The joinery is not completely sussed out yet. I used screws on this piece in order to fune tune the back rest angle and seat angle with shims. I have to say though, for my first chair design and build, it’s pretty comfortable!

Here are the wip shots of the Shinozashi ari shikuchi or locked dovetail joint. This one is good for long Ranma screen spaces because three sides are clean. Video Link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UQVkfPRzRwo

I never did post a picture of the finished piece... so here is the finished kumiko screen I did for the challenge with Mitch Peacock. Here is the link for the build video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nlMthMUqDq8
