“I love how the universe’s first reaction to something that shouldn’t exist is to just. SHOVE them into an endless void. But with different flavors. Static void, endless black void, space void, WHITE void. Void where sometimes other people are there and can get in but SOMETIMES its just you? What the fuck.”

Of course it was a cool name. Their creator gave them it. Its the last part of his words that catch Gale’s attention though.
“Sans...?”
Tumblr media
They... know that name...? Do they?
“Well, uh... if its your first time out, why don’t we explore together? We can meet up with your brother later.”

Oh. Oh he was, uh, continuing to talk to them.
“I’m…Gale. Its nice to meet you too?” They didn’t have much practice with this… “I just got here, so no, I don’t go to the school.” Gosh, he was young. Trusting too, it seemed like. That could be useful. Maybe they could get some information about this place from this skeleton…
“You said you were new too, right? Whats this place like?”
Tumblr media
* YOU HAVE A VERY COOL NAME GALE!
papyrus considers this for a moment, then shrugs. makes sense to him.
* IT’S…. BIG. * MAYBE. I’M NOT SURE. * I HAVEN’T BEEN OUT OF THE HOUSE MUCH YET. * MY BROTHER TAKES ME TO SCHOOL AND BESIDES THAT, THIS IS MY FIRST TIME OUT. * MY BROTHER IS SOOOOO COOL YOU HAVE TO MEET HIM! * HIS NAME IS SANS.

* OH, WELL THAT EXPLAINS IT!
he thinks nothing more of it, not noticing anything strange about the other.
* DO YOU GO TO THE SCHOOL HERE TOO? * I’VE ONLY BEEN GOING FOR A WEEK OR SO. * I HAVEN’T REALLY MADE ANY FRIENDS YET… * WHAT’S YOUR NAME? * I’M PAPYRUS!

* ...I HAVEN’T SEEN YOU IN TOWN BEFORE. ARE YOU NEW TOO? (oh look it’s a lil deltarune pap)

“...New?” They echo, stopping and turning towards the taller skeleton. He looked... familiar? Gale can’t place a name, can’t even remember meeting a skeleton like him, but something about his voice sends a shock through their memory, like a spark through a wire. Its the only thing that keeps them from simply moving forwards and ignoring the question.“I guess you could say I’m new.”

Turns out falling back through the void isn’t exactly the most pleasant thing. Gale wakes up from her back slamming into her desk chair and her forehead falling into the corner of her keyboard.
“Fyah!”
Rubbing at the two new sore spots, she briefly scrambles for her phone-
4 am. The dorms are empty and still. That had been real, right? It hadn’t been just a dream? Opening her laptop, she takes a long moment to stare at the Undertale and Deltarune icons, biting her lip.
No. It was real.
Shutting the laptop once more, she lays her head down on her desk with a long groan. She had 4 more hours til her first class, though she doubted she would use those hours to sleep.
Gaster had given her a lot to think about.
discardedvessel‌:
Theres a strange disconnect between Gaster’s words and his tone, and for a moment, it catches Gale off guard. She had gotten used to him disagreeing with her, pushing against her points. He still was, in a way, but this time it was… comforting?
Maybe it was the encouragement, or the fact he acknowledged she didn’t mean them harm. Regardless, something strained finally relaxes. She supposed this was as close to a compromise as they were going to get. Taking in a deep breath, Gale exhaled slowly, her eyes darting around her feet as she took a moment to process. Intention wasn’t enough. Yes, that was correct. All of what he just said was correct.
“You know…” She begins softly, after a moment of pause, “…If we were in the same world, if all this… timeline and control stuff didn’t get in the way… I think we could get along.” She looks back up, cautiously smiling. “…I know saying ‘you’re interesting’ might imply things because of what I can do, because i’m a…. player, but… I don’t mean it that way.”
She catches herself before she falls into the usual trap of rambling on, trying to explain herself. Fix the world. Gale had a lot to think about, after a long, LONG nap. Did she have class tomorrow? What day was it? Fuck it.
“I… bye then. I hope we can speak again, sometime. Maybe.”
Well then. It seems like they finally got through to each other.
Gaster makes a noise that sounds almost like a laugh – a breathiness that sounds out of place in the clicks and whirrs of his natural distorted language. He shakes his head and the grin stretches wider.
I WOULD LIKE TO THINK WE COULD, YES. AND I KNOW. THIS HAS BEEN IMMEASURABLY USEFUL, HUMAN. I THANK YOU FOR YOUR TIME.
Now, she seems ready to go. He’s ready too. There is much work to be done.
YES, GOODBYE. I DO NOT DOUBT OUR PATHS WILL CROSS AGAIN.
He waves his hand, sending her falling back through the veil of this world and back to her own.

I SEE.
He was not expecting that response. Not expecting such a strong resolve in a human – in a player. But maybe he should have. Determination. What an odd, odd thing. Almost as odd as sentimentality. That, in itself, is far more dangerous than Determination. He should’ve seen it sooner. Maybe he would’ve been able to prevent some tragedies.
YOU SHOULD NOT THINK THAT WAY.
It’s an odd comment, coming from him. From anyone else, it might’ve even sounded genuine. But that’s not Gaster. Never has been.
YOU CAN PRETEND TO BE PART OF THIS WORLD ALL YOU LIKE BUT IN THE END… IT IS NOT YOURS. YOU ARE NOT OF IT. IT WILL ONLY EVER BE AN ESCAPE FOR YOU. WHY NOT PUT THAT EFFORT INTO IMPROVING YOUR OWN WORLD? BELIEVE ME, GALE. I UNDERSTAND WHY YOU ARE SO DESPERATE TO SEE OUR LIVES UNFOLD. IN MANY WAYS, I AM IN THE SAME POSITION AS YOU. BUT IT IS NOT RIGHT. I AM TRYING TO BREAK A CYCLE. NO MATTER HOW WELL YOU MEAN, IT WILL NEVER BE RIGHT WHEN WE HAVE OUTLINE INFLUENCES AND PRESENCES.
He stares back at her, expression empty, devoid of any visible emotion. But it’s there. Oh, it’s there.
YOU ARE FREE TO LEAVE. I WANTED TO UNDERSTAND, AND I HAVE ACHIEVED THAT GOAL. YOU HAVE ARGUED YOUR POINT WELL. BUT I CANNOT GRANT YOU WHAT YOU WISH. I NEITHER HAVE THE POWER, NOR THE WILL. I KNOW YOU DO NOT MEAN US HARM. BUT INTENTION SOMETIMES IS NOT ENOUGH.
Theres a strange disconnect between Gaster’s words and his tone, and for a moment, it catches Gale off guard. She had gotten used to him disagreeing with her, pushing against her points. He still was, in a way, but this time it was... comforting?

He knows he’s gotten through to her. It’s a grim realization for them both. And he feels strange about it. In many ways, it’s all become like a game to him as well. He’s so far removed from it. He never wanted to admit the possibility that there were humans who existed outside this world, who were not confined by the rules of it all. It would open up so many more realms of possibility, so many more questions to be answered. Normally, that wouldn’t be a problem, but he doesn’t need more questions, he needs answers.
THERE’S SOMETHING TERRIBLY TWISTED ABOUT THAT. IS IT NOT UNSETTLING TO IMAGINE YOURSELF IN THAT POSITION? SIMPLY BEING OBSERVED BY AN  OMNISCIENT BEING?
He does not wait for an answer. Her response does not matter. Nothing she says matters to him. Never has.
OUR LIVES ARE NOT FOR YOUR ENTERTAINMENT. WE WOULD ALL BE BETTER OFF WITHOUT YOU AS A PRESENCE. I WOULD VENTURE TO GUESS YOUR TIME WOULD BE BETTER SPENT THINKING ABOUT YOUR OWN LIFE, RATHER THAN OURS AS WELL.
….. DO YOU REALLY DISAGREE?
It is twisted. But any thoughts she would have voiced is immediate taken over by Gaster’s question. Gale’s own life? Did she disagree?
“Yes.”
The word leaves her lips without hesitation. “You are not for my entertainment. You might be better off with me.” Something changes in her demeanor, her head dropping slightly as her gaze turns slightly distant.
“My time is not better spent thinking about my own life. My own world. My own world is broken. My own world is on a path of destruction. At home I have little. I HATE my world. I hate everything about it.” Her head shakes a bit as she snaps herself out of what seemed to be a cycle she had gotten into many times before.
“I love your world. This world. I don’t know why- it is so similar to mine, but so different. I love it. I want to see it continue and thrive.” Gale’s eyes raise again, meeting Gaster’s empty sockets.
“...But that doesn’t matter to you.” Biting her lip, she lets out a long, stressed breath. “...If you won’t listen to me, I fail to see why you keep me here. Why you... called me here? Summoned me?”

Gaster would not hurt her. He likely could not, even if he wanted to. Even in the void, he does not possess the physical qualities to interact with anything physical, even in a non-physical plane. But even if he could – he wouldn’t. He has never been one to hold back in executing plans and experiments that could cause harm, but to attack another…. that is not his style. Not since the war. He would always rather be the one behind the curtain. And now, despite his anger, he sees no use in attack.
THE PEOPLE IN THIS WORLD, SIMPLY, DO NOT EXIST. YOU UNDERSTAND THIS. THEY WERE CREATED BY ME, FOR MY USAGE. THE FACT THAT THEY HAVE DEVELOPED LIVES OF THEIR OWN IS AN UNEXPECTED DEVELOPMENT. I HAVE NO NEED FOR THEM WHEN THE EXPERIMENT IS OVER. THEN AGAIN, I SEE NO REASON TO END THE SIMULATION.
If that’s what she’s worried about, anyway. If it can sustain itself, he’ll leave it running for eternity. It certainly does not need his code input to function.
THIS EXPERIMENT WILL REVEAL HOW PEOPLE LIKE YOU INFLUENCE THE PEOPLE OF MY WORLD. I WILL LEARN WHAT MAKES THEM SUSCEPTIBLE TO YOUT CONTROL. I WILL LEARN HOW TO TAKE AWAY YOUR CONTROL. I WILL LEARN HOW TO MAKE SURE YOU CAN NEVER TOUCH MY WORLD AGAIN.
DO YOU UNDERSTAND, HUMAN?
YOU ARE NOT WELCOME.
The emotional part of Gale wants to scream ‘of course they exist! They live, they breathe, they adapt!’ But the more logical part... How many hours had she spent at her desk, maneuvering Frisk around the Underground? There, she had been behind her computer screen. There, she had been unable to interact by herself. There was always a vessel, a medium. A barrier between her and them.
'Why care? They’re just pixels and code,’ so many had said. Very intriguing pixels, but pixels, numbers and colors. They could be altered, hacked, manipulated, though she didn’t have the knowledge to do so. Others had, and would. Real life was not so easily altered. Real life wasn’t Undertale. Deltarune. The monsters did not exist.
And yet, she was here, in front of one. One who was telling her he would not simply end the world when he was done with it. It brought some comfort- it should have brought more. If Gaster figured out how to remove players, there would be no more dangers of player-caused genocide. Frisk and Kris would have their bodies back. Their lives. But why did that matter if they didn’t exist? Why was there still a lump in her throat?
She was selfish. So selfish. She wants to be there to see it continue, and it shows. Shows in the pitiful expression on her face as he says shes not welcome.
“...What if we didn’t have control? Couldn't we just.... Spectate?”
She doesnt want to let go.
