thinking about the fact that blue, specifically cobalt blue, was considered a sacred colour in the medieval times because of how difficult it was to obtain so it was only ever used for important and prominent figures and it's literally sonic's specific shade of blue and he's considered the king in satbk—

your post about the hypercriticism on sonadow (and similar slash ships) being kinda homophobic is so real. i remember a few posts popping up in my dash that all joked about "oh ha ha ha, careful with googling sonic x shadow now!!!!" with the implication you may find the "nasty" smut. and it felt offputting seeing that because... okay, you'll find something spicy... and what's wrong with that??? literally you can accidentally find porny/erotic shit with any topic. i never find that kind of joke with sonamy or shadouge even though i probably have the equal chance of finding smut of them by accident

Honestly though. These people may say ‘oh I just hate nsfw of all of these characters’ but you never hear about shadouge or sonamy etc any of those ships being the butt of jokes and vitriol as often or to the degree that even as widely accepted and moderate a ship as Sonadow is. People jump through HOOPS to justify why specifically Sonadow is so “nasty” and “immoral” to make adult work of, and if you point out other hetero ships they’ll remember those exist even more in number than Sonadow and be like “oh yeah those too I guess.”

It’s transparent.

This part! You want to work officially, and you have no idea what the art industry is like…? Nsfw cartoon artists are hired ALL the time, and often are improving themselves through nsfw. I know at least one official comic artist who has done nsfw work in the sonic fandom specifically and still posts suggestive work, I promise you none of their bosses or colleagues are telling them they are not qualified or need to stop.

It’s ignorance to the real world. You may be very technically advanced at your skill, but a rotten attitude and holier than thou way of speaking on others will not get you as far as you think it will. Sega and IDW do not give a fuck if you’re squeaky clean, it’s about skill and how you work with others. Will you compromise your moral stance in order to work in this industry? If so, your ‘moral stance’ is a flimsy one, and not a belief you hold very strongly. In that case it begs the question why you would be so hostile over an opinion you won’t uphold if it gets you a job with people you secretly hate and are disgusted by.

oh boy. seeing a very large Sonadow blog go out of their way to paint every single nsfw or suggestive artist in a nasty, nasty light in this fandom because they believe aging up is the root of all evil and not at all an extremely valid and natural thing that happens, particularly if you were a child when you got into this franchise and mentally were aging up characters in your head as you were getting older because there is nothing more natural than to want to see your favorite characters in new stages of their lives.

do they think the writers and artists behind Archie are p*dophilic freaks too for their “30 years later” arc that very clearly depicts that “everyone grew up and boned and had children with each other”?

absolutely laughable. I’m sure these people aren’t handling any story involving growing up or navigating adulthood well whatsoever, because god forbid characters ever age and experience age-appropriate change or stories as a result. sorry but I am extremely worried for your literacy if you take issue with this.

I’d like to note as well that it’s really curious (depressing) to see some influential people convince hordes of young adults that suggestive or adult works around shipping is a moral failing and something to be shamed for when the ships in question they’re ALWAYS or even primarily targeting are gay ones.

They may not be consciously homophobic or may even be queer themselves, but we are not immune to the conditioning and moral straightwashing that pressures us to present queer relationships in safe, clean, kid-friendly manners at all times no matter what as to not come off as anything complicated, dark, or appropriately risqué even when the characters in question are made into adults.

I’ve literally seen this subtle bias in question. People with tens of thousands of followers going, “I never see this issue with ships like sonamy or knuxouge!” while bashing people who ship Sonadow or sonknux etc because they make adult work— when those heterosexual ships arguably have MORE nsfw work on the internet than the other two. they’re not taking notice, or they’re not caring, because when the adult work is queer, the ‘nastiness’ in their eyes becomes much more apparent and glaring than when it isn’t. and they always feel the need to call it out.

They may say ‘well I feel the same way about all ships, not just the gay ones!’ but I promise you 98% of all shipping “callouts” have surrounded same sex shipping, largely Sonadow. ask yourself why these ships are so under fire constantly while nsfw artists for ships like sonamy or shadamy are virtually never in the spotlight.

And yes, queer people fall for this and perpetuate this mindset as well. In fact, we often let ourselves be the main vehicles for it, absorbing the shock of drama and pain that callouts result in while saving the heterosexual users from scrutiny or accusations for taking down any work they deem ‘inappropriate.’

Aaaahhhh thank u!! Watership actually isn’t the main inspiration for this but it is a large one in regards to how Sonic is depicted! ‘Prince of a Thousand Enemies’ is one such thing that always struck me, including the quote I used for that sketch. Other inspirations for the story and themes include Wolf’s Rain (the main one), Season 3 of Sonic X (the Metarex arc), Princess Mononoke, and as far as atmosphere goes, partially Ai no Kusabi. I’m really excited to share more soon.

Fun fact, did you know that Black Oak gave Sonic the title ‘hero of beasts’ near the finale of season 3 in the Japanese dub? That whole season honestly is a big reason I started conceptualizing this story to begin with.
