determined to stick to her story, nova went for her best poker face. well, poker face with an authentic smile - there was nothing about this situation that required a fake one. "you have to know there's nothing pretty about pennies." besides, it wasn't costing her anything. being the back up to the spare of the heir came with certain advantages, like a lot of money and a lot of leeway; to a certain extent, anyway. "sometimes you can't not believe in it." she singsonged, almost pointedly, before a cynical expression rested on her face even as the joke fluttered from her lips, "are you sure you're not a con artist?"

hand on her hip as she waited for slater's reply to come, tilly eyed the contents of her extensive walk in wardrobe. casual elegance was the goal here, mainly because she refused to step foot out the door in anything less. she found what she was looking for soon enough - a simple checkered dress that still said 'money' and a plain blazer to keep it tame, she spared a second to thank the years of experience that had brought her here. her little thanks giving was cut short when she felt her phone vibrate again, wasting no time unlocking her screen.

[tilly]: my only problem is the lack of support i get from you.[tilly]: oh yeah, because tapping a few buttons is just as satisfying as being destructive. bitch, what kind of dramatic effect is that? excuse me for having standards and a flair for the dramatic. shaking her head like it did anything to move the smile on her face, she padded back into her bedroom and through the adjoining door to the ensuite attached.

[tilly]: and don't you forget it. i always knew i'd be a hero one day.[tilly]: eating sushi alone though? i feel sad for you. so, so sad.[tilly]: even though i don't think being alone does anything to diminish your sexy. [tilly]: deal. like you even have to ask, it's gonna be so worth it. [tilly]: that sounds perfect (like me).

placing her clothes and phone on the vanity, tilly moved to open the shower door and turn the water on. while she waited for it to get hotter than was reasonable, she knew it would be a quick one. she'd bathed thoroughly last night; it was a crucial part of her nightly routine. as much as she liked the print, she wasn't an animal. and it wasn't like she'd done much since, but a little exfoliating and shower cream never hurt anyone.

between waiting to hear back from a handful of contractors in regards to her latest project and waking up with the tiniest headache that morning, it had been enough for tilly to give herself the day off. maybe tomorrow things would fall into place, but for now she was perfectly fine enjoying the perks of being her own boss. she hadn’t even made it out of bed yet, though that could have everything to do with how glued to her phone she was. despite the complications of the ‘her’ in question, a smile twitched at her lips as she read the newest texts - from the only person she elected to reply to.

[tilly]: but her number’s right there. it’s practically taunting me. [tilly]: it honestly might just be a line of middle finger emojis at this point. besides, if i did that wouldn’t i theoretically have to burn your phone and mine? [tilly]: i think i can clear some room in my schedule, as long as it’s for something greasy.

the plans mightn’t be set in stone yet, but tilly was borderline grateful for the reason to get out of bed, even if staying there had been her choice. it wasn’t her fault it was the most fitting place to sulk, not that she was willing to admit that was what she’d been doing between texting slater. not sparing it another thought and with her phone still in hand, she made her way into her closet to start the process of getting ready.

considering slater’s position at pruitt publishing, maybe she should have been more concerned with overseeing everything, but the millennial and gen z underlings she’d hired tended to run the place almost by themselves. peering back down at her phone with a smile on her lips, she nodded in response to a question she didn’t even hear, once again letting her thumbs type away. “you guys know i think you all know best. i trust you all.”

[slater]: i’m sorry to say this but i think you have a problem. [slater]: a line of middle finger emojis is a valid response. also, bitch, deleting texts exists. we don’t have to go all caveman on my iphone.

as the meeting finished up, she stopped for a second, thanking everyone for being there before she cleared out, making a beeline to her office as she continued texting tilly.

[slater]: that’s my girl. thank god, i thought i was gonna have to do sushi alone in my office again. [slater]: v sad and not sexy. [slater]: we can get the greasiest burgers and fries imaginable. you wanna go to that shitty little diner we like? [slater]: i can meet in 30.

sitting down in her chair, she called her assistant’s name, informing her she’d be going out for lunch just as she brought her a stack of papers she should have read a week prior. “thanks, doll.” she reluctantly looked through them, though she was just waiting for the buzzing of her phone again.
