Solar Steps affordable housing concept

Nicole Cao presents “Solar Steps”, a proposed affordable residence featuring a triple-storey ETFE greenhouse atrium that explores how threshold materiality and operability could create new forms of collective living that empower residents to make their own spaces. Sited in Brampton, Ontario, the project was completed for a third-year design studio led by professor Adrian Blackwell at the University of Waterloo entitled “Humans are more important than real estate”. The colourfully illustrated project recently won the Azure Magazine A+ Student Award for 2023.

The design concept layers architectural thresholds to redefine the relationships between interior and exterior climates, and between domestic and public programs. By varying circulatory, visual, and auditory porosity, the operable partitions, connections, openings, and other architectural interventions grant spatial agency to residents.

The triple-height greenhouse structure covers a shared terrace on the private side of the building, which becomes a semi-public, semi-exterior mediator in addition to being a climate strategy. While occupants remain protected from wind and precipitation, sunlight filtering in through the translucent high ceiling evokes the outdoors in a space that is comfortable and habitable year-round.

Deciduous interior plantings add to the seasonal dynamic, while traces of resident activity, including furniture, clotheslines, bikes, easels, and other personal belongings, populate the edge of the terrace and strengthen the community-made social atmosphere. These qualities of comfort and accessibility draw out and concentrate resident activity under the greenhouse terrace. The result is a new shared living condition that encourages conversations and interactions between neighbours.

As a result of the layered scheme, residents regularly interact with or across threshold elements to adapt the spaces in between to changing programmatic needs. Operable bi-fold doors allow the greenhouse condition to bleed past the entrance boundaries of each unit’s south face to merge with each private living quarter when desired. Sliding doors, sliding-walls, and operable wall openings within the units likewise divide and merge spaces to accommodate large gatherings or quiet study zones as needed for diverse housing situations, including multi-generational families and co-housing groups.

The street-facing arcade of Solar Steps joins the residence to the urban context through its sheltering structure and commercial program. Storefront space attached to first-floor units gives residents direct access to small-business opportunities. Oncoming pedestrians, drawn to both commercial activity and shelter from weather and traffic, animate the arcade into a lively marketplace whose accessibility and atmosphere become the foundations of a new gathering centre for the broader urban community.

Through a layering of thresholds and inhabited intermediary spaces, the individual resident’s relationship to their neighbours and to the broader community become at the same time more connected and more flexible: Agency over where and how to draw the boundary between personal and community space is given to the residents themselves.

Flow House in Toronto, Canada by Dubbeldam Architecture + Design

Dubbeldam Architecture + Design unveils Flow House, a semi-detached Victorian house in midtown Toronto that has been reconfigured for a creative couple and their children. The transformation of the 130-year-old home included adding additional living space on the back and top of the home, improving connections to the outdoors, and updating the interior and rear yards for contemporary living. The traditional front façade remains, while the interior is now a meaningful reflection of the family’s unique personalities, vocations, and shared experiences.

Though less than five meters wide, with an added area of only 230 square meters, the home now seems much larger through a strategy of compression and expansion. Narrowed interstitial spaces enclose, creating a feeling of constriction, then open to larger spaces with lofty ceilings. And there are moments of surprise and delight – the merging of interior and exterior spaces, the introduction of natural light in unexpected places, and the playful sculpting of elements that establish an organic quality to the home.

Referencing one homeowner’s profession as a ceramicist, the notion of tactility and craft permeates the home through materials, forms, patterns, and textures. Suggesting a complementary hybrid of Scandinavian and Mediterranean influences, the wood cabinetry, screens, and flooring in warm white oak are accented by concrete and Carrara marble sinks, antiqued brass fixtures, and hand-moulded clay pendants. A clean backdrop of white walls and shelving provides a blank canvas to showcase the family’s collection of art, tapestries, and sculpture from local artists, along with artefacts gathered during travels abroad and the owner’s ceramics. Colour animates the interstitial spaces of the home – terra cotta tiles are laid in a herringbone pattern in the entry foyer, and a wall of geometric cerulean blue tiles defines the bar between the kitchen and dining room.

Underpinned by an aesthetic of fluid contours – a deliberate contrast to the rectilinear floorplan – the house’s interior elements appear sculpted rather than built. The helical staircase connecting all four floors is a focal point that expresses the home’s sense of flow. Awash in natural light from the skylight above, the winding balustrade and natural oak treads cast shifting shadows throughout the day.

“Curvilinear forms are employed throughout," says firm principal, Heather Dubbeldam. "Arched openings between rooms incite anticipation as they frame views of what lies beyond, resonating with curved walls, display nooks, the kitchen island and banquette, further enhancing the house’s sculptural sensibility.”

In addition to utilizing the latest sustainable systems and materials to promote well-being, large windows and skylights provide abundant light, natural ventilation, and connections to the outdoors. Mahogany-framed, floor-to-ceiling sliding glass doors on the third floor provide access to a roof deck, while a similarly lofty door in the kitchen opens to the furnished back patio.

Similar spatial strategies continue in the design of the rear yard. The volumes of charcoal-coloured panels that comprise the new rear façade are stepped back on multiple planes to create a roof deck and recessed entrance. In the back garden, compression and expansion are further explored through narrowed planting beds that open to wider spaces designed for play, dining, and relaxation. The wooden pergola, brick pavers, and ochre outdoor furniture are a nod to the various temperate climates the family has experienced together. At the same time, the landscaping of lush plantings provides interest year-round.

The living room is a work of art, featuring breathtaking artwork inspired by a phone booth in London that adds a touch of sophistication and elegance to the space. The movable bar counter adds flexibility to the location as well as purpose, allowing for seamless transitions from entertainment to dining.

Perhaps one of the most unique elements of the apartment is the wall art that opens up as a TV — which is hard to notice at first! This innovative design adds an element of surprise and excitement to the room, with sleek and modern technology seamlessly blending into the aesthetic of the space.

Sans Souci reveals an ambitious new design direction

Sans Souci, a leading designer and producer of glass and lighting installations, has unveiled its latest portfolio with an ambitious new direction for the brand. The new design concept focuses on discovering beauty and innovation from contrasting perspectives, which was the inspiration behind an impressive 15 new collections set to be launched during the 2023 Milan Design Week.

The new collections mark a creative milestone for Sans Souci, which has experienced substantial global growth in recent years. Among the most exciting designs are collaborations with renowned designers Karim Rashid and William Sawaya.

William Sawaya’s BRANCHY collection is sleek and artistic, inspired by the natural world. It features long crystal tubes in sandblasted, clear and metallic finishes, fitted together with metal bindings. Each component has an LED light source running through it, offering the flexibility to create various ambiences depending on how you choose to illuminate your interior.

Karim Rashid’s exquisite CHIN CHIN collection plays with perception. Flawless installations consist of crystal components shaped into golden drinking glasses suspended from glass rings, finished with gradient nano-coating. The resulting effect is a fascinating paradox – the glasses appear full, but they are empty; they hang upside down, yet nothing spills. This design is both opulent and contemporary and serves as a dramatic focal point for any interior.

Each of the new collections builds on Sans Souci’s central design concept – seeking harmony in contrasting ideas and aesthetics. The multimedia piece featured exquisite crystal cuboids that dynamically respond to the surrounding audio, emitting a different ambience depending on the tone of the sound. A building that promises to leave a lasting impression

Designed by 42MM Architecture, the new One World Marketing Office in Gomti Nagar, Lucknow makes use of segmental geometry and a transparent exterior to create a landmark structure that will leave a lasting impact on passers-by.

The One World Marketing Office is situated in one of the fastest developing areas of Lucknow, i.e. Gomti Nagar. Designed to evolve with its changing context, the building features segmental geometry which is represented both in its planning and its façade. Sliced geometry was adopted, envisioning functional flexibility in the programme.

The segments create a modular geometry that can expand and contract as per its use. The meeting rooms can swell up for a large gathering or shrink for a smaller one, optimising the use of space.

The volumetric geometry resembles a glass sliced with vertical ribs. Transparency was adopted to embrace the public nature of the building, with the vision of converting it into a public place. The functional transformation is eagerly anticipated with the booming infrastructure and population in the surrounding locality. The transparent building envelope welcomes and embraces people. The green segments within the building add a biophilic touch to the architecture and interiors of the project. The infinity water pool along the periphery of the building adds a floating effect to the transparent mass.

Just like the façade, the spatial configuration is also segmental. The building consists of three broad zones. The left-wing, also called the Visitors’ Zone, constitutes five meeting rooms. The central wing is the reception-cum-display area, also called the Display Zone. The right-wing comprises workstations, a conference room, and a director’s cabin, called the Office Zone. The segmental planning bifurcates the population within the building. The central zone is large and open, giving a welcoming vibe to all its visitors, while the segregation ensures smooth functioning.

The building features two materials – glass and concrete finish paint. The main skeleton of the building is transparent, while the vertical diaphragms are crafted in brick and metal. The segmental wave is finished in concrete paint.

The binary material palate of the building allows it to feature a prominent grey colour while reflecting the colours of its surroundings – which includes greens from the vegetation, grey from the arterial road, and blue from the sky and water. Hence, the building can camouflage while simultaneously standing out.

The vertical segments are the most dynamic aspect of the building, configured in the form of a wave, both vertically and horizontally. The glass skeleton of the building camouflages it into the green, while the vertical segments create a wave-like appearance for passers-by.

The USP of the project is its temporary yet permanent nature. The structure is a temporary build that can be reassembled at any location whenever required. Its permanence lies in the impact it creates on the passers-by. The unconventional form of the building adds a recall value to it.

The Oatmeal Factory Xinzhou, China JSPA Design

JSPA Design unveils The Oatmeal Factory, located in Ningwu, Shanxi province, China. The project consists of the creation of an Oatmeal factory, transforming raw oats into flour products. The production process, mostly automated, needed two different production lines with high-volume machinery, as well as spaces open to the public with a shop, a café, and office space.

The surroundings of the project featured newly constructed industrial buildings, dry landscapes, and coal mines, and it seemed like an interesting concept to develop the factory as an introverted building that would recreate its natural environment. Besides satisfying all functional requirements, the project conceived of the building as a stimulant of the human senses, generating surprising experiences for visitors.

The idea was to use a system of brick walls to enclose and hide the various technical spaces of the factory in an opaque ground floor, and to establish a simple concrete volume on the top of it to host the public spaces of the program. Patios and large gardens will pierce the whole building, providing natural light and creating impressive spatial dilatations within the factory. Central production spaces will also receive natural light from concrete sheds, opening the roof to the north light.

The system of brick walls starts from the front of the factory, where a landscaped area is voluntarily left open for use by the local community, with benches and water pools for kids to play. Brick walls emerge slowly from the benches to become the property fence of the factory, and the façade of the entire building.

The shape taken by the brick walls will form and define the different entrances of the factory, each with a specific function: Raw materials delivery, product loading, staff and visitor entry. Separated into distinct lanes, staff and visitors will never cross paths inside the factory. While workers will enjoy functional organization, visitors will enter a planned spatial experience. The production line is showcased to the visitor in an elevated corridor overlooking the workshop.

The dormitory for employees was set up in the back of the factory and was conceived as an invisible architecture. The brick fence wall was thickened to host the building, and patios were created to bring light to the rooms, while still preserving their intimacy. The space between the factory and the dorm becomes a garden in which a concrete table and square seats were set up.

The choice of construction materials carries a strong meaning: the use of grey brick is a way to create a deep relationship with the site using local construction methods. Exposed concrete, on the other hand, emphasizes the modernity of the building, enabling structure and architecture to be bound together.

The landscape design is also fully integrated into the design process. Rainwater is collected on the roof and redirected to water pools on different levels through cast-in-place concrete water exhausts, making its natural circulation part of the experience of the space. The water flows up to the entrance of the factory, where a last waterfall, combined with a twelve-meter cantilever concrete logo wall, invites visitors to enter the architecture.

Across the process, some regulatory issues were resolved through innovative design solutions. Fire-fighting regulations required a water container on the roof, and an independent element was created in the form of a sculptural cantilevered stainless-steel box.

Residential Barn in a Hamlet Zone in Switzerland

Be Architektur introduces its residential Barn project in a Hamlet Zone of around 15 buildings in a rural, mainly agricultural setting in Switzerland. This new home in the hamlet feels obliged to honour the area’s historical context.

Typical barn characteristics were taken up and reinterpreted in a modern way. From a distance, the residence discreetly blends into its rustic surroundings. The exterior facade is clad in glazed spruce wood – the same type of timber used on traditional Swiss barns. A pitched roof was designed in the same vein, with tile roofing typical to the local architecture.

The building responds to the topography of the site. Building on a slope usually requires excavation behind the building and backfilling in front, but this approach was deliberately rejected. Instead, the ground floor is arranged in a series of levels at different heights to follow the existing slope.

A barn is typically used for storage and as a workroom for agricultural production. Although this new building is not a depository, its rooms – bedrooms, bathrooms, closets, etc. – are “stored” within it as closed volumes figuratively stacked on top of one another. This “stacking” creates a sculptural interior, which is a positive spatial volume within the building. A negative volume forms around these stacks, comprising a landscape of open living spaces that are interconnected vertically and horizontally. A generous interior unfolds with a sense of endless expanse.

The new building reinterprets the simple, unadorned nature of a traditional barn through its choice of materials. Exposed concrete slabs for the floor and a special plaster covering the walls ensure a raw, unfinished feel. Two different materials with a similar effect – concrete and plaster – are used throughout the interior to achieve an expressive effect.

The freestanding two-car garage in exposed concrete was created using the same timber formwork as that used for the house facade. A photovoltaic system was installed on the gently sloping concrete gable roof, with solar panels covering the surface like a carpet. The new home enters into a thematic dialogue with the surrounding agricultural buildings for a unique interpretation of the vernacular barn typology.
