When most people think about acne, they often first associate it with puberty but this is not always the case. Many adults are still affected by acne well beyond the teenage years (about 50 million Americans), and the experience is different for both men and women from various factors. MALE ACNE For men with acne, hormone levels are usually the main trigger. Men produce more of the hormone testosterone than women, which results in thick and oily skin. The production of sebum, or oil, is also higher in males because their sebaceous glands are more active (from the testosterone), which can lead to clogged pores, causing breakouts. Lastly, while those beards may look cool, facial hair can trap oil and act as a breeding ground for the bacteria that exacerbates pimples and acne. In addition to the face and neck, men are more susceptible to acne on the chest, back, upper arms, and shoulders. Sweating may increase the severity, especially during the warmer months and after exercising, especially from wearing nylon fabrics.
Finally, the addition of supplements to enhance muscle growth may also promote and enhance underlying acne. FEMALE ACNE According to The Journal of Clinical and Aesthetic Dermatology, 22% of adult women are affected by acne, compared to less than 5% of adult men. Like men, female acne is the result of too much oil being produced by the skin, which results in clogged pores = breakouts. This may be attributed to estrogen and progesterone hormone fluctuations, especially just before the menstrual cycle.. Unlike men, women’s hormone levels become disrupted when birth control pills are taken, during the menstrual cycle, and menopause. The fluctuations can cause increased oil production in the pore. “14 – 50 year old women can get a deeper type of acne around the face and neck, that mostly spares the nose, chest and back” said Dr. Brook Brouha, West Derm board-certified dermatologist. “The unique hormonal influences make it a different disease entirely and you need to have the right game plan in order to treat it,” said Brouha. So what do you do when you want to slow down and prevent these breakouts from happening? How to Treat: Face acne: keep that face oil at bay by making sure to wash your face twice a day with an acne face wash, preferably one with salicylic or glycolic acid. Your skin needs to stay hydrated, not dry, in order to stay in balance and prevent breakouts so follow with a moisturizer that works best with your skin type. For men, be careful when you shave around acne blemishes and make sure not to shave off the tops of pimples because this can irritate the skin and make it worse. Back (bacne) / Body acne: nobody wants an army of angry pimples on their back or body. Make sure you are showering daily with an antibacterial soap and exfoliating to slough off all dead skin cells and unclog pores. You can also use over-the-counter spot treatments that have salicylic acid in them for those extra pesky zits. Female Acne: “Classic acne regimes are more effective for adolescent style chest, back and face acne and tend to be largely ineffective for this unique acne,” said Brouha. “At times, we recommend an oral treatment with isotretinoin, especially if your acne is severe.“ The most advanced treatment for acne is photodynamic therapy. This procedure is presently being investigated in a clinical study and is utilized in some of our clinics. Acne affects us all at some point during our lifetimes. The level of severity is different amongst every person but just know we are always here to help! If you are not seeing results with any of the above treatment options or have any questions about your acne, schedule an in-clinic or TeleDerm appointment with one of our West Dermatology dermatologists today! Summer is finally here and with it the smell of freshly cut grass, backyard barbecues, and sunscreen lotion. We’ve transitioned into a new season with its own skincare rules. They revolve around the sun and, protecting us from its UV rays. Summer puts extra stress on our skin, and using sunscreen with a high SPF is essential.
Here are our favorite tips for getting you summer skincare ready. Slip, Slap, Slop, and Wrap! According to the American Cancer Society, we’re most protected from the sun’s harmful rays when we layer several types of protection. So, slip on a shirt, slap on a hat, slop on sunscreen and wrap on sunglasses. These all work together to supplement the protection we get from sunscreen, which is often not enough on its own. Remember The Two-Hour Rule We all need to be extra careful about reapplying sunscreen every two hours. Clearly, if you’re spending most of the day indoors, this isn’t necessary. But for those days where you’ll be outside all day, reapply sunscreen every two hours and even more frequently if you’re doing a lot of sweating or swimming. Lips need protection, too, so look for balms with SPF. This may seem extreme, but surprisingly, most cancers on the face occur on the lips. This sensitive skin is susceptible to sun damage, just like the rest of our faces.
Hydrate The summer heat can zap the water our body needs for plump, youthful-looking skin. Remember to drink at least eight glasses of liquid each day (soda and other sugary drinks don’t count). You might need more than eight cups of water, especially if you’re spending time outdoors. You can also hydrate with sweet fruits like oranges and melons that are dripping with skin-quenching water. The same goes for many vegetables, including cucumbers. They have an amazing water content of 90%. Switch to a Serum The heavy moisturizers of winter gave way to the oil-free moisturizers of spring. And now that summer’s here, a silky serum might be all the hydration your skin needs. This gem from SkinCeuticals, the C E Ferulic Vitamin C serum, undos new damage from lazy days in the sun. A serum helps not just moisturize but also nourish your sun-exposed skin. Retinoid Can Take a Summer Break Summer’s the time to relax your retinoid use because it can make your skin extra sensitive to the sun. This also applies to alpha and beta hydroxy acids. If you still want to use these products, limit your sun exposure, use less than usual, or switch to every other day or less. You can ramp up your usage again during the shady days of fall and winter. Prepare for Events Now’s the time to renew our friendships and our Botox and lip filler injections, too. We all want to glow during the summer weddings, galas, soirees, and other big events of the season. Botox injections are a quick, effective way to relax away crow’s feet and worry lines and reveal a more youthful, refreshed look for summer. Fillers can accentuate our precious pouts, which many of us are excited to show off this summer. Ready to book your Botox or filler appointment? Click here. Whether you’re out and about enjoying the summer weather, or inside taking a much needed break and relaxation, don’t let your skincare fall by the wayside. If you have any questions, schedule your appointment now. We are here to help! Contact your local dermatologist today:

June is an important time for men because it's Men’s Health Month! Its main purpose is to bring awareness to health issues and diseases prevalent among men and encouraging early detection and treatment. This also includes skin health! And with it being a time where we are all out in the sun more, it’s very important to consistently check your skin for abnormal moles that could be cancerous or precancerous, especially if you’re over 45.
As we age, the risk for developing skin cancers and other skin concerns increases. And according to a UK study, if you’re diagnosed with a non-melanoma skin cancer between the ages of 45 – 59, your risk for other types of cancer, not just another form of skin cancer, goes up by 74%. Because of this, your health check routine should start by making sure your skin is healthy first. The Skin Cancer Foundation recommends you perform a skin check monthly to help identify any changing lesions that might be cancerous or precancerous. If you do find something atypical, it’s important you see one of our West Dermatology board-certified dermatologists, who are specialists in skin cancer diagnosis and treatment. They can then conduct a more thorough in-clinic or telehealth exam to determine whether or not the abnormality is potentially harmful.
WHAT TO LOOK FOR WHEN CHECKING YOUR SKIN FOR SKIN CANCER First, don’t be alarmed if you find a mole or two (or more). A normal mole is smooth to the touch and has a consistent color, could be brown, black, or tan. It has a consistent border, as well, and is oval or round, and it could have a flat or raised profile. An irregular mole that you should have examined more often has an irregular shape or jagged border. It’s rough to the touch and is often a combination of colors: various shades of brown throughout the lesion or a mixture of red, white, and/or blue. In addition, make sure to check new spots or lesions, or look for older ones that have changed in color, shape, size, or texture. Also, be on the lookout for atypical sores, lumps, or blemishes, especially ones that crust over, bleed, itch, ooze, and itch as well as cause pain or are tender to the touch. HOW TO PERFORM YOUR OWN SKIN CHECK Although you can effectively perform your own skin check any time, doing so at shower or bath time is more convenient because you’ll already be naked. It doesn’t matter if it’s before or after, but looking at as much skin as possible is a must. If available, enlist the help of a partner, as a second pair of eyes is always a good idea to make sure nothing is missed, particularly on the scalp or back. WHAT YOU’LL NEED: A good, bright light A full-length mirror A hand mirror Two chairs and/or stools A brush and/or hairdryer STEP-BY-STEP INSTRUCTIONS: Facing the full-length mirror, examine your lips, nose, mouth, forehead, ears, neck, shoulders, chest, arms, underarms, hands, palms, between the fingers, the fronts of the thighs, and the shins. Continue by bending your elbows to examine your forearms and the backs of your upper arms. Standing with your back to the full-length mirror and using the hand mirror, inspect the back of your neck, shoulders, upper back, and any part of your upper arms that you could not clearly view earlier. Continue in this position by scanning your lower back, buttocks, and the upper part of the back of your legs. Check your scalp by parting your hair – with a brush and/or hairdryer, if necessary – as well as around and behind your ears. While sitting on a stool or chair, prop your feet up and check the backs of your calves as well as the tops and bottoms of your feet, including between the toes. Finally, still sitting, use the hand mirror to examine your genitalia and any parts of the buttocks or upper legs you may have missed. Be sure to honor Men’s Health Month by making skin checks an important part of your skin health routine. If you find an irregularity or skin change that cannot be explained, contact us immediately to schedule a full, comprehensive skin exam. In addition to performing your skin check monthly, it’s important to schedule an annual skin check with our dermatologists. Don’t wait – it could save your life.

"Bunk" is a slang term for nonsense, and in honor of June Acne Awareness Month, let's debunk the nonsense of acne myths and aim for blemish-free skin.
Myth #1 Tanning Clears Up Acne We're calling "bunk" on this myth. The sun's UV rays do nothing to zap acne. Instead, your skin dries out, inflames, produces more oil, and gets worse. It may feel at first like the sun is drying your acne, but it's not healing it. We know this because we see tanned people all the time who still have acne. Plus, sun exposure increases your risk of developing melanoma and other skin cancers. Myth #2 Dairy Causes Acne We've all heard that dairy causes acne, but this is definitely a myth. There's been some speculation that an increase in insulin growth factor-1 leads to acne because it activates sebum production and that milk proteins inflame acne. The truth is that no scientific study yet has been strong enough to prove a correlation between dairy and acne.
Myth #3 Acne is Just a Teen Issue Millions of adults who suffer from acne will tell you that it's not just a teen issue. Yes, a whopping 85% of teens get some form of acne at some point. But just because the teenage years are over doesn't mean acne ends too. 30% of adults ages 20-60, and beyond, deal with acne. It's the most common skin disease. And it's possible for women who had pretty clear skin as a teen to develop acne later in life. Myth #4 Acne Will Clear Up Fast If You Scrub Your Skin You can't scrub away acne, and trying will actually make it worse. It's true that all pimples begin with a clogged pore, and because acne can start forming several weeks before it appears, it makes sense to keep pores clear. A good acne-prevention routine includes using retinol for quicker skin turnover, washing your face before bed, and using non pore-clogging products. But once acne appears, scrubbing is a no-no. Instead, wash your face gently twice a day with a mild cleanser. Myth #5 You Don't Need to Treat Acne Some people say acne will eventually go away on its own, so you don't need to treat it. This is a myth because true acne is a chronic skin condition. If left untreated, it can damage your skin (and self-esteem) along the way. Acne is something that needs to be managed, and our dermatologists can help. Dermatologists are up-to-date with all the latest breakthroughs for breakouts. They can clear almost any acne issue. The problem is that people often don't ask for professional help. Instead, some people resort to home treatments that can do more harm than good, like dabbing toothpaste on acne to try to dry it up. Household products are not necessarily safe on the skin, and the fluorides in toothpaste can make acne worse. Leave all the guesswork up to the professionals and let us answer any questions you have. Book your appointment today for personalized skincare advice to address your acne concerns. One of our board-certified dermatologists would be happy to see you! Every Friday before Memorial Day, we celebrate National Don’t Fry Day to continue raising awareness of the importance of sun damage prevention and wearing sunscreen. If you still haven’t booked your annual skin check, you can book here.
As summer approaches and you start spending more time outside, you’ll probably want to start keeping a tube of sunscreen or one of the newer sunscreen powders handy. If you pop into any convenience store, you’re likely to see at least a half-dozen sunscreen brands. While the ubiquity of sunscreen makes it easy to stay sun-safe, the variety of options makes it hard to choose. That’s where WE come in! With so many sunscreen options out there, we want to make it easier for you to find one that works for you and helps you avoid getting ‘fried’ in the sun. First things first: There are two main types of sunscreen. 1) Physical sunscreens use minerals that sit on top of skin. They deflect sunlight with the active ingredients titanium dioxide and zinc oxide. The old versions used to feel thick and sometimes leave a white cast on the skin. Newer versions of microniadized zinc and titanium feel great, are not thick and do not leave a white sheen on your skin. Ideal for: all skin types. 2) Chemical sunscreens, on the other hand, absorb into the skin in about 15 – 30 mins and transform UV rays into heat making them less harmful. Chemical options tend to be more water and sweat resistant so these are great for those with active lifestyles.
At this point, you may be wondering: Which brand is the best? We’re glad you asked! Here are some of our top picks: > For your face West Dermatology Antioxidant Moisturizing Sunscreen SPF 50, a fast-absorbing sunscreen that feels smooth on the skin. It absorbs quickly, layers well under makeup and doesn't smell like SPF. Click here to shop now. > For the body EltaMD UV Lotion Broad-Spectrum SPF 30+ Body Sunscreen offers antioxidant protection that combats skin-aging free radicals associated with UV rays. It glides on and provides moisture to the entire body. Click here to shop now. > For on-the-go grab an ISDIN Mineral Brush, your solution to reapplying SPF at 2 p.m. without messing up your mascara. Click here to shop now. Whichever sunscreen you choose, remember to use it in conjunction with other sun-safety measures, like wearing protective clothing and scheduling an annual skin check with one of our board-certified dermatologists. As always, get in touch with us if you have any questions. We hope you get outside and enjoy healthy, comfortable skin all summer long! Contact your local dermatologist today:

All of us experience a few pesky pimples from time to time but what if your case is more severe and considered chronic acne? With June being Acne Awareness Month and 50 million Americans currently affected by the condition, we figured we could shed some light. Whether you’re trying to avoid the occasional zit or looking for answers on how to get your acne under control, read on to see what the main causes of it are and learn about treatment options and prevention. WHAT IS ACNE? Acne is a common skin condition, in fact, it's the most common skin problem in the country. It shows up in the form of anything from red bumps, whiteheads and blackheads, to cysts and nodules. It’s most commonly found on the face but can also appear on shoulders, back, neck, chest, and upper arms. WHAT CAUSES IT? According to Medical News Today, dermatologists have identified different factors that can largely impact the appearance of acne: · Your skin is producing too much oil: When your skin produces too much, your pores can clog up easier. If you have oily skin, you are more prone because your sebaceous glands in the skin are producing too much sebum, the oily, waxy substance that protects and hydrates the skin · You have too many dead skin cells building up in your pores: when dead skin cells accumulate and don’t break away from the skin regularly, they start to collect in your pores/hair follicles. These combined with the body’s natural oils (sebum) can cause the pores to clog, resulting in pimples, whiteheads and blackheads · The presence of a bacteria called Propionibacterium acnes (P. acnes): when the clogging of your pores builds up too much, they become a breeding ground for the bacteria. This bacteria turns sebum into fatty acids that activate inflammation in nearby skin cells, causing acne.
WAYS TO TREAT & PREVENT Many methods of treatment and prevention are available to keep acne at bay. Results can differ from person to person and depend on the acne severity level. For mild to moderate cases of acne (a few blemishes, whiteheads, and/or blackheads), you can use simple over-the-counter medications with benzoyl peroxide, retinoids, or salicylic acid. For severe cases (red, swollen, often painful blemishes consisting of cysts and/or nodules), a variety of treatments can work, this includes prescription-strength topical or oral medications, antibiotics to destroy the acne-causing bacteria, and a variety of light therapies that reduce the presence of P. acne bacteria on the skin. There are many ways to help prevent acne from popping up in the first place: · Wash your face twice daily: it’s important to remove excess oil and sebum from the skin by washing morning and night. Its best to use a mild cleanser to not irritate the skin. · Know your skin type: oily skin is the most acne-prone. Combination skin is also prone because it is a mixture of both dry and oily areas. Knowing your skin type will help you choose the right skin care products. If your skin is oily, opt for an oil-free moisturizer. · Use over-the-counter acne treatments: over-the-counter creams and serums can reduce breakouts on the chin, nose, and forehead. Look for products with salicylic acid or benzoyl peroxide. · Reduce stress: stress is not the cause of acne but can certainly make it worse. According to the American Academy of Dermatology, research has shown that when you're stressed, your body tends to produce more oil-stimulating hormones. Some things you can do to manage your stress levels are to practice yoga, meditate, or use aromatherapy. We know how acne can impact you, regardless of age. Not only does it affect your skin, but it can also make you self-conscious about your appearance. As your community skin and acne specialists, we’re here to provide support and answer all your questions. Contact your local dermatologist today:

While you wait for your next skin check with us, did you know you can check yourself from the comfort of your own home?
Here’s how to perform an at-home skin check: Examine your body in a full-length mirror. Check the front and back of your body, and use a handheld mirror to see your blind spots. Don’t forget to stand to the side and raise your arms to get a complete look at your entire body. Areas to make sure that you check: · Bend your elbows and look closely at your underarms, forearms, and palms. · Check the backs of your legs, in between your toes, and the soles of your feet. · Take a look at your scalp and neck (don’t forget to use your handheld mirror!). · Don’t forget to evaluate your back, buttocks, and private areas.
Now that you’ve completed your skin self-check, you’re probably wondering what you should do if you spot a mole. The truth is, not every mole is worrisome. There are some stark differences between regular moles and skin cancer. When in doubt, follow ABCDE guidelines for what could mean that you have a form of skin cancer. Your mole may be cancerous if the following occurs: · A is for Asymmetry: The mole is not the same size on both sides. · B is for Border: The borders are jagged, uneven, and irregular. · C is for Color: Color is inconsistent. · D is for Diameter: The size of the mole is 6mm or more. However, melanoma doesn’t always start out small but may grow over time. · E is for Evolving: Your mole may be cancerous if it changes size, shape, or color over time. At-home skin checks are a great first step, but it’s always important to follow-up with a board-certified dermatologist to get a thorough second glance. Don’t leave it to guesswork because your health depends on it. Book your skin check with us to make sure your skin is healthy and cancer-free. You deserve that peace of mind! Does your skin tend to act like a rebellious teen, throwing tantrums in the form of irritation, rashes, and sudden breakouts? No matter how hard you try to protect and nourish your skin, it just doesn’t seem happy? You may have a sensitive skin type! Here are five simple steps you can take to help put together a skincare routine great for sensitive skin.
1. Start with a gentle cleanser. Cleansing is important, but don’t go overboard with harsh cleansers that can rob your skin of healthy oils and lead to dryness. The right cleanser should be gentle and support a healthy balance of moisture. We recommend Alastin Gentle Cleanser. The Alastin Gentle Cleanser contains calming antioxidants that help soothe and protect the skin. Key ingredients include: · D-Panthenol is a Vitamin B5 derivative that helps soften and moisturize skin · Oat Beta Glucan is an anti-inflammatory ingredient that helps reduce redness, itching and irritation · Bisabolol is a concentrated form of chamomile that has strong anti-irritant, anti-inflammatory, and anti-microbial properties · Oat Kernel Extract is an antioxidant and skin-conditioning agent 2. Soothe irritation with a calming serum. A calming serum can help reduce redness and flare-ups, common signs of sensitive skin. Choosing the right serum is key to reducing redness and improving the appearance of discoloration and uneven skin tone. We recommend SkinCeuticals Phyto Corrective Gel. This serum contains thyme, olive, cucumber, Eucalyptus leaf, and hyaluronic acid. Thyme has strong antibacterial properties that help fight acne and inflammation. Cucumber also possesses anti-inflammatory properties necessary to soothe skin irritation and reduce inflammation. Eucalyptus leaf is another powerful ingredient with cleansing and anti-inflammatory properties. 3. Choose a hydrating moisturizer. The best moisturizer for sensitive skin should be lightweight but carry potent ingredients that provide intense hydration, nourish and restore the skin’s natural protective barrier, while also soothing the drying effects of environmental aggressors, skin disorders, and dermatological treatments. Choose a moisturizer with safe ingredients, such as glycerin, dimethicone, shea butter, and sodium hyaluronate. We recommend Avene Cold Cream Facial Moisturizer for Sensitive Skin. This moisturizer contains pharmaceutical grade mineral oil and white beeswax to hydrate, soothe, and soften skin.
4. Use a hydrating sunscreen. Sunscreen is key to protecting your skin from the harmful effects of sun exposure. Choose a sunscreen packed with antioxidants and vital minerals, such as micronized zinc oxide. We recommend West Dermatology Sheer Physical Spray SPF 50 Sunscreen. This mineral sunscreen provides broad spectrum UVA/UVB protection and contains the following key ingredients: 12 % Zinc Oxide, Green Tea Polyphenols, Resveratrol, Vitamin C, Emblica, and Co-Q10. Zinc oxide may help reduce irritation and seal in moisture without clogging the pores. Green tea polyphenols contain powerful antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties that protect the skin. 5. Restore balance with specialized treatment. Use a calming mask once a week to give your sensitive skin that extra protection and care it needs. Be sure to choose a product with plant-based ingredients that possess anti-inflammatory properties. We recommend SkinCeuticals Phyto Corrective Calming Masque. This corrective mask is clinically tested effective post-procedure to provide: · 20% reduction in visual redness · 47% reduction in discomfort · 5°F average reduction in skin surface temperature Bonus Tip: Ingredients to avoid When building your skin care product regime, pay careful attention to the ingredients. Avoid products that contain sulfates, retinol, alcohol, fragrance, and parabens. These ingredients can work against the good ones and do more damage than good when it comes to your skin health. Got Questions? If you have any questions about building a skin care routine for sensitive skin, don’t hesitate to give us a call or schedule an appointment with one of our board-certified dermatologists. They’ll be happy to build a customized skincare routine that is right for you! Contact your local dermatologist today:

One of the most important pieces our Check+Protect reminders is none other than: Please wear sunscreen!
The temperature is warming up, and with so much beautiful sunshine, it's only natural that you'll be outside enjoying yourself! While it's a great time of year to enjoy time outdoors, don't let your skincare take a backseat. Now more than ever, you should prioritize your at-home skincare routine (sunscreen included!) so that your skin remains healthy. One of the best ways to protect your skin from damage or exposure to harmful UV rays is to slather on sunscreen. This can be accomplished in a matter of minutes. Plus, you have peace of mind that you won't get sunburned - ouch!. Did you know that wearing sunscreen with at least 15 SPF can actually reduce your risk of carcinoma by 40% and reduce your risk of melanoma by 50%? Yes, wearing sunscreen is THAT important. Some people simply don't know just how much it can really save your skin and protect you from skin cancer.
Some other things you may not know about sunscreen application: · You should still wear sunscreen even if you're indoors. Why? Because harmful UVA and UVB rays can still penetrate your skin via windows. Plus, you're likely to step outside at least once in a while, so you don't want to forget to apply sunscreen simply because you may spend most of your day indoors. · Don't forget to reapply! If you're outside, you should remember to reapply your sunscreen at least every two hours to ensure that you haven't sweat it off. But wait--what type of sunscreen should you wear? The truth is, the type of sunscreen you choose should be appropriate for your skin type. Here's a brief breakdown of the best sunscreens we offer that are suited for certain skin types: · Dry skin: West Dermatology Antioxidant Moisturizing Sunscreen SPF 50 · Oily / Acne-prone skin: EltaMD UV Daily Broad-Spectrum SPF 40 Moisturizing Facial Sunscreen · Normal skin: Isdin Eryfotona Actinica Sunscreen · Sensitive skin: West Dermatology Aloe + Cucumber Sunscreen SPF 50 Not sure what type of skin you have? Not to worry, we can help with that too! When you schedule your next skin check appointment with us, we can help identify which products are best for your skin. And the best news we've been saving for last: Throughout the entire month of May, our sunscreen is on sale for 20% off! Just use SUNSCREEN20 at checkout on our online store. We get it. You have a lot going on, you don’t think you have any skin changes, and you may not be exactly thrilled with having someone else inspect your skin. However, this simple and fast check could be the one thing standing between you and your health. Skin cancer can easily go unnoticed, especially if it’s in a less visible part of your body. Don’t gamble your health--get your skin check on the books!
If you’re feeling overwhelmed about what you should expect during your skin check appointment, we’ve got you covered. As part of our Check + Protect initiative, we want you to be as informed as possible so you can continue making the best decisions for your health! If you’ve never had a skin check before, you may be surprised at just how easy it is.                                     Before Your Exam Let’s kick this off by talking about what you should do before your skin check exam. Take a few minutes to give yourself a thorough self-exam so you can let your dermatologist know about any changes that you may have noticed. Make sure that you check every nook and cranny (and yes, we mean that literally!). Some spots that should be on your radar: · Behind your ears · Under your arms · Throughout your scalp · Between your buttocks It’s a good idea to use a full-length mirror as well as a hand mirror to get a full view of those hard-to-reach places. If you notice any new spots or blemishes, growths, or itching and bleeding, make sure that you let your dermatologist know. During Your Exam Your dermatologist will start your skin exam by asking some questions about any changes you’ve noticed recently or over a period of time. Next, your dermatologist will start examining your body completely to take a closer look at any changes you’ve noticed, as well as making sure that they don’t identify anything concerning. Remember, dermatologists are medical professionals, and they are skilled in handling this exam with your comfort and care in mind. The entire process takes about 10 minutes but could take longer if your dermatologist needs to take a closer look at anything worrisome if found. Your dermatologist will take special care to notice any of the following: · Irregular borders · Changes over time · Size of moles · Color After Your Exam If your dermatologist discovers a mole, the next step may be to have further testing done, including a biopsy. This test will determine if the mole is cancerous. If the mole is cancerous, then you’ll move forward with an appropriate treatment plan. This is why early detection is so important! If you’ve been putting off your skin check, it’s time to get it scheduled! The entire process is done and over within a matter of minutes, and it could very well make a difference in your overall health. The sooner we can identify any issues, the sooner we can tackle them head-on! If you have any other questions or would like to know more, don’t hesitate to reach out to us and book an appointment! We get it; you're tired of hearing about healthy eating. You know you should care because it's good for your skin, but what you really want is flavor—juicy, dripping, oozing yumminess. Is this too much to ask? Not at all! We know the most delicious foods for alluring skin (including chocolate). Let’s celebrate World Heath Day together by eating our way to attractive skin. We promise to recommend only scrumptious foods.
1) Go Nuts with Almonds The meatiness of almonds with their crunchy, substantial flavor is so enticing it's hard to stop with just one small handful. But that's all you need to get the health benefits of this skin-boosting food. Not only are they loaded with flavor, but they're also rich in vitamin E. This antioxidant protects your skin against inflammation and UV damage. 2) Spice it Up with Cinnamon There's nothing like the fragrant, spicy goodness of cinnamon to wake up your senses in the morning. Add it to your hot cereal, or sprinkle it on warm toast or coffee for a satisfying treat for your taste buds. The vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants in cinnamon will make your skin glow. 3) Eat Tall, Dark, and Chocolate As we wrote about in our Valentine’s Day blog post, dark chocolate is not only decadent eating; it has fringe benefits for your skin. "Antioxidants help the skin fight free radicals, and with free radicals at bay, you're less likely to develop fine lines, wrinkles, and other signs of aging." This good news makes us dream of chocolate factories and want to burst out singing, “I’ve got a golden ticket.”
4) Ole for Guacamole Why wait for Super Bowl Sunday to slurp this superfood? Dip into the benefits of guacamole all year round. This antioxidant-rich food will make your taste buds sing—the tomato and garlic punch up the creamy avocado flavor, and juice gives it that zippy tang. And all of these ingredients are packed with the skin-helping vitamins, antioxidants, and fatty acids you need for radiate health. That’s why guacamole sits pretty at the intersection of healthy and yummy. 5) Grab some Grapes Eat red grapes straight from the fridge for a burst of cool, juicy sweetness. This superfood works wonders on your skin from the inside out. Brimming with good-for-skin nutrients like antioxidants, grapes will stimulate collagen production and protect your skin. It's a win-win! 6) Get to the “Root” of Good Skin Health Vitamin A supports skin health, and just one sweet potato exceeds your recommended daily allowance. They also contain a natural sunscreen, beta carotene, that can help protect your skin. Eating them is a ticket to beautiful skin. But don’t eat them all. They’re also great to apply topically. So next time you cook, save some for this sweet potato face mask. Healthy food can lead to healthy skin, but only if you eat it regularly. You’ve heard people say the best exercise is the one you’ll actually do. The same adage applies to eating. The best skin-healthy food is the one you’ll actually eat. So, what’s it for you? Is it dark chocolate, cinnamon, almonds, grapes, sweet potatoes, or guacamole? Find what appeals to you and glow for it. Have any questions about anything written here? Call us today or schedule your appointment now. Contact your local dermatologist today:

A wart is harmless contagious skin growth that feels rough to the touch and is often characterized by minuscule clotted blood vessels that resemble tiny black dots. Though not a health risk, you may wish to have it removed because of social embarrassment. We offer treatment options tailored to your needs and aesthetic goals. When treating warts, the goal is to destroy the growths themselves or fight off HPV. For immediate treatment, we offer several effective methods: prescription-strength salicylic, bichloroacetic, or trichloroacetic acids; in-office treatments including pulse-dyed lasers and cryotherapy. Our neighborhood practitioners urge patience when treating warts, as it can take weeks or even months to produce results. We understand how warts can be a physical nuisance and even affect your self-esteem.
Contact us if you have a wart that you want to eliminate so you can have clear, smooth skin once again.

It’s sometimes hard to gauge how much skincare product to use. You don’t want to use too much or too little. You want that “Goldilocks” amount that’s “just right.”
Most People use too Much ProductWe all tend to over-apply our skincare products without even thinking about it. Maybe we subconsciously think the extra product will give us extra-good skin, but it doesn't work like that. The Right AmountIf you think of how much skincare product to apply in terms of fruit, it’s pretty easy to keep things straight. Imagine the smallest amount as a pomegranate seed. It’s just enough to tap onto your face.
· Pomegranate Seed Size Retinols and serums are effective in the tiniest pomegranate-seed amount. You want to use enough product to get the full benefit, but not so much that your skin turns red or dries out. Start small and build up to what your skin can tolerate. The retinol you buy from your dermatologist is stronger than over-the-counter retinol, so a little goes a long way. · The Size of a Blueberry The next category of skincare products requires an amount the size of a blueberry. This includes moisturizers, night creams, and oils. You want enough to cover your face, but not liberally. · A Cherry Size Sunscreen is the one skincare product where more is better. Too little leaves you under-protected. It's best to apply it liberally. No, it won’t increase the SPF; that's a myth. But applying a cherry-sized amount will ensure that every inch of your facial skin gets adequate protection, whether the sunscreen is tinted or untinted. Read the Product Instructions Most skincare comes with instructions that recommended the amount of product to use for best results. You’ll want to follow the guidelines…eventually. At first, it’s best to start small and work up to the recommended amount once you know how your skin will react. Experiment to See What Works Experimenting will help you figure out what works for you. We each have unique skincare needs that don't always match up perfectly with the product recommendations. If you use the recommended amount of moisturizer, for example, and your skin still feels tight, add a little more. Our board-certified dermatologists know just the right amount of skincare product to use. They're great at explaining it, especially when they can assess your skincare needs in person and give you individualized advice. Feel free to request an appointment with us anytime.
