whoa Chara….didn’t know you read Japanese literature from over a decade from when you fell down the hole in 201X… The alternate check text for the Royal Guards in Genocide route is a direct quote from page 66 of the translation of Banana Yoshimoto’s book “Kitchen” and published in Japanese in 1988 and published in English in 1993.  The version in the game may have been a slightly different translation. I have no idea why Toby included this quote. It’s not that famous a book or a quote, even the Google books doesn’t have it as one of the “popular passages”.  You can read it online here http://docslide.us/documents/kitchen-banana-yoshimoto-5584503f21857.html, let me know if you find any other references in it, I unfortunately have a full reading list of exciting scientific articles to struggle to understand.

I'm not sure if anyone has ever talked about this since this is a 6 months old reddit post (which i personally kept for future references), this post highlights how the light source in the school makes absolutely no sense. What do you think about this? Link to post -> reddit. com/r/Deltarune/comments/acaie8/i_wasted_20_minutes_of_my_life_explaining_to_you/ (1/3)
There’re also a couple weird things I have noticed: it’s suspicious how the door knob in Toriel’s house doesn’t match, and when the player went in and out the house multiple times there’s this dialogue where Toriel asks Kris if they want her to install a revolving door instead lmao.(It’s as if Toby expected the player to notice that specific detail?) Also one door straight up teleports you into another location. And all of these weird things happen in the overworld instead of dark world…(2/3)
tbh, the more I think the more I’m convinced that Deltarune world is just a hyper realistic simulation made by Gaster haha. (3/3)
Oh, this is interesting. Here’s a link to the reddit post, for the curious.
Tumblr media
And here’s Toriel’s door. The doorknob is always on the right, no matter what side of the door you’re on, which… yea, that’s not how doors work at all.
Tumblr media
I’d brush it off as a mistake, maybe two different sprite artists not communicating? But there’s that dialogue for repeatedly going through it…
(Also why is the Delta Rune above the doorway so… wrong. Why is it like that.)
(As for the “teleporting door,“ I’m a little confused. Are you talking about the supply closet?)
Toby’s usually pretty good with having background details make sense in Undertale. At least, from what I remember? (Correct me if I’m wrong.) So it’s a little odd that there seem to be so many slip-ups like this in Deltarune..

here’s a thought. what if souls AREN’T a thing in deltarune? we hear about souls and determination nonstop in undertale, we cannot go 5 feet without being up to our armpits in lore about souls.
correct me if i’m wrong but in deltarune i’m pretty sure we literally do not hear about souls at all except from ralsei which is super suspicious. the only soul we actually see is the one kris carries around and that thing is fucking weird. it’s pretty much implied it doesn’t belong to kris. they’re perfectly fine without it too, and we see them without it like at least 3 times.
maybe souls just…aren’t a natural thing in the deltarune universe?
tbh i feel like that would add to the “sans is from deltarune” theory because in undertale we never actually see sans turn to dust and monsters only turn to dust if they have a soul…
from what we know in undertale, when a monster dies their dust is spread on their favorite thing as a funeral. they aren’t buried. so then why are they being buried in deltarune…?

To summarize: •sans has black sclera eyes with white pupils which is not like his brother but IS like undyne the undying and flowey, the key trait of determined characters •sans is not sweating, he is melting •sans dies off screen because he melts •sans’s magic is a different colour than his eye •san’s eye is undyne’s eye yellow and undyne’s magic cyan •sans has undyne’s missing eye •you kill undyne twice but your kill counter goes up once •sans does not increase your kill counter because, like undyne the undying, he is already dead and undying •sans has to eat non magical food to support his body which is not physical enough to remain stable, like undyne the undying’s
Conclusion: Sans is Undying

Over-Analysing the Wingdings font
Everyone is acquainted with the fact that Sans had some involvement with Gaster– but what about Papyrus?
Tumblr media
At this “puzzle”, you’re given the option to agree with either Sans or Papyrus on which is harder: Junior Jumble or Crosswords. Regardless of who you agree with, Sans will say this about his brother:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
At first glance, this is just a throwaway gag to show the player just how ridiculous Papyrus can be.
However, horoscopes are made based on the alignment of the stars when someone is born. Because they live Underground, the monsters can’t see the stars at all– in fact, some monsters don’t even know what a star is.
Tumblr media
Generally, horoscopes are made based upon one’s zodiac sign– which is, ironically, used in the Wingdings font, but only when the letters are lowercase
Tumblr media
( imaged reads: * [redacted] )
Which leaves us to wonder: was this a subtle jab at the players by Toby, who knew we would eventually delve into the game’s code, or was it a sly implication that Papyrus is working with Sans to fix the machine?
Tumblr media
Bonus: I know this is stretching it a little far, but the asterisk symbol (*) in Wingdings is represented by a the image of a letter (mail).
Tumblr media
Sans’ mailbox is said to be full of junkmail, while Papyrus’ mailbox is empty; Papyrus is the only character to not use an asterisk before the speaks.

Undertale Theories
So I’ve been doing a lot of thinking about FONTS, usually at like 4 am when I can’t sleep.
Sans and Papyrus are both named based on fonts. Comic Sans and Papyrus respectively. Except those aren’t the proper names of those fonts.
Tumblr media
The proper name of the Comic Sans font is not Comic Sans Serif. It is Comic Sans MS. The MS stands for Microsoft. However, the suffix “MS” after a name also means Master of Science, indicating that Comic Sans actually has a degree in science (in addition to being a pun-telling comic).
Tumblr media
Sans, by his very font name, is a master of both puns and science. Probably why his joke bokes have physics books in them and vice versa.
This probably isn’t news to anyone, but the other thing I see often is conversation about Papyrus’ mismatched eyes. It makes me wonder if people realize that the full name of the Papyrus font is:
Tumblr media
Papyrus ITC
And the ITC? It stands for International Typeface Corporation (the trademark owners of the font), but ITC could also stand for italicized. Why does Papyrus lean? Italics. Why are his eyes sloped so that one is bigger than the other? Italics. Papyrus’ eyes slope from left to right (on his face), the same as an italicized font.
In a font, italics are used to add emphasis to a word. Can you imagine being an italicized person? Everything about you would be so emphatic. It would be almost as if you always talked in capital letters….
Why is he wearing a fedora and lacking redeemable qualities in the Undertale Art Book?
Tumblr media
Old timey italicized (Italian) mobster maybe?
Being italicized would certainly explain the obsession with spaghetti…
( @drundertalescum you seem to know a lot. Is this all old news?)

An (Incomplete) List of Evidence for Dr. Gaster and Sans Being the Same Person: PART A
This has been quite the undertaking, though perhaps not as much of one as you might think.  There really has been no excuse for taking this long to post this.
As such, this is not nearly as complete a list as I was hoping to present.  That being said, I’m working on a second part that covers the subjects that weren’t included here, such as Papyrus, the timeline given for the skelebros and Alphys, Papyrus, the skelebros’ basement, Papyrus, and other things.  I will probably include additions to the subjects listed below as well, since I feel like I may have missed a few things.  But, for now, this should suffice.
I’ve attempted to word the hints from what we know for sure about Gaster himself to be “suspect neutral.”  Even if people disagree with my verdict, I would like to think some of these may help others out in their own “Who Is Gaster” theories.
From The Gaster Followers:
He, the Gaster suspect, must be an actual character, thus justifying Dr. Gaster’s tale being told at all.
He must be a singular entity that identifies as a ‘he’ as described by the Gaster followers.
He must be secretive and elusive by nature and be acknowledged as such by the game itself (not merely interpreted as such by the fandom). Someone who the player must jump through hoops to learn more about, thus justifying Dr. Gaster’s tale being shared in such a secretive way.
He must be relevant to the game’s story and plot, thus justifying the amount of attention and focus given to him in the fun events.
He must occasionally create somber moments in the game, rather than just react to solemn events, thus allowing for the somber nature of Dr. Gaster’s tale.
He must be humanoid or have a humanoid head, thus justifying the humanoid shape of the “piece of him” held by the Rhymer.
He must have a clearly stated interest in science and show working knowledge of it, since Dr. Gaster was a Royal Scientist.  He doesn’t need to show evidence of being a genius (especially since the argument that Gaster is a genius is rather shaky itself; I’ve mentioned this in passing before, but I never went really into it), he just needs to have a stated interest in science and show working knowledge of it.
He must be implied to be trailing Frisk and be shown to be someone who can physically mess with Frisk’s phone without them noticing, thus justifying both the hints that he’s physically present during the encounters with the Gaster followers and the message that the phone “won’t turn on” that is unique to those three encounters.
He must be implied to be from some place/time other than where/when the game takes place (most likely when), thus explaining how Gaster can disappear long ago as implied by the followers, be rumored to have shattered across time and space, and yet still be relevant enough to the story for there to be follower who talks just about him without hinting at the True Lab and DT experiments once while holding a “piece of Gaster” (thus letting us see what he looked like).
He is most likely smaller than the human or roughly the same height, thus explaining why the piece of him is so, so small. Unless his head is disproportionately small for his body, he’s not likely to be a tall monster. Especially since heads are otherwise depicted a bit on the big size in the Undertale overworld for a cute, friendly cartoon-y look.
He’s probably not someone who is known to be particularly tidy or hygienic, thus explaining the piece of Gaster existing as it is unlikely to be the result of determination (since that’s not how determination works or how too much of it affects monsters) and we know it can’t be part of his corpse, since monsters turn to dust after death and he is hinted to be alive.  Which means it’s almost certainly a… monster leaving of some kind.  Like a molt husk?  And with that in mind, he may be connected to the annoying dog, the only character in the game explicitly known to molt.
Unless the piece of Gaster is a complete mislead for currently unknown reasons, he should have facial features resembling those of the piece.  In other words, whoever Gaster is should have large dark square eyes and a broad grinning mouth in the overworld. If a character is found with matching facial features, but other details are off, then we must consider how they are off and whether or not the game provides an adequate explanation, such as age, a change in diet, or perhaps injury.
He must show high intelligence, but be physically slow in some form or a procrastinator.  Someone that is not a particularly energetic person. The sort of person who could somehow work slower than even Alphys (who is repeatedly noted to have nothing to show yet as the royal scientist in the eyes of the people so far and is shown to slack off constantly) and yet still be productive as this is how the followers describe Dr. Gaster.
In regards to the above, “works impossibly slow (yet still somehow manages to get shit done)” is coded to be referring to Sans throughout the rest of the game, so this being the sole characterization directly attributed to Gaster outside of “brilliant scientist” carries some rather heavy implications for their connection.
From Entry Seventeen:
He must be linked to wingdings somehow in a way that implies he understands and/or can write the font.
He probably does use asterisks in regular speech and must be shown to be capable both uppercase and lowercase letters. Contrary to popular assumptions, Entry Number Seventeen is the only time Gaster is shown to speak without an asterisk (or in all-caps).  In fact, most instances of wingdings are written in lowercase.
The way the entry is presented also makes me suspect that it is one of Chara’s memories. Especially since the Royal Scientists are strongly indicated to NOT have assistants and the True Lab otherwise focuses on the tale of the royal children, leading me to strongly suspect that “YOU TWO“ is a reference to them and not the skeletons or Sans and Alphys, and that Gaster was teaching the children about his job (most likely as part of a field trip).  Memories do not have asterisks.
With Entry Number Seventeen possibly being Chara’s memory in mind, whoever Gaster is probably is the sort of person to pause while speaking, showing perhaps a contemplative nature, and to ask questions regarding the thoughts of those he is teaching, encouraging critical thinking.  The wording of Entry Seventeen overall should be considered and compared to the speech patterns of the cast.
From Statements by Toby
Toby Fox once hinted that the strange machine that is somehow key to Sans “going back” to what he considers “home” had something to do with Gaster’s disappearance.  Sadly, the full Twitter conversation on this was lost long ago and I’ve not had any luck locating it…. (Everyone saves Toby’s answers to other people’s Tweets, but not the Tweets answered, so the full context of several of his Tweets have been lost….).  Crossed out because unfortunately I can’t prove this because I stupidly didn’t save that Tweet.  However, I’m counting it anyway.  Edit: Ah, never mind. I may have been mistaken.
There’s probably a second person with Gaster who vanished too, but is not also Dr. Gaster, as Shyren’s battle sprite being comprised of two monster sprites together was brought up as “important information” in a way that very strongly implies this bit of information is about Gaster. (Note: this is in contrast to monsters like Froggit, Mystery Man, and a variety of other monsters in Undertale, who were designed to look like they’re two people or have two faces, but are really just one sprite)
In the same message, Sans jokes about how sensitive he is to slandering remarks, paraphrases a quote from a Gaster follower and comments on how not everyone is as tough as his brother.  In this way, Sans characterizes himself as someone who it would be rude to talk about while he’s listening.
The Narrative:
He must have some kind of connection to the name Gaster. This should be obvious, but two characters – or rather one character and two names – having a connection is a detail so often assumed to be an indication of relationship that it is frequently disregarded as a possible indication of identity.  On that note, it is highly unlikely that he is connected to the name via proxy through a third person.  From a storytelling perspective, that would just add an unnecessary complication to the narrative as his identity is never openly stated anyways.  It just makes for poor writing, especially for an underlying side mystery.
The puzzles of Hotland and the CORE are implied to have been designed by Gaster, not Alphys or Mettaton.  Therefore, Gaster probably likes lasers, conveyors, and perhaps making people jump, since there’s also quite a bit of that in Hotland. So we should be looking for someone who is implied to like lasers and conveyors either in conversation or in battle (since we see from a few characters, such as Papyrus, that their interests influence the appearance of their attacks).  (Side note: I’ll try to go more into why we know neither Alphys nor Mettaton designed the puzzles of Hotland and the Core in Part B)
With the fact that all of Alphys’ lab entries (which always use “I”; never “we”) and remarks about her job suggest she’s always worked alone and the thought of hiring assistants or other scientists apparently never occurred to Asgore or her (until after his death and the loss of the SOULs) no matter how bad things went, it seems unlikely that Gaster would’ve had assistants either.  So then how is Sans connected to Gaster?
One of the ruler’s implied duties is to safeguard the hopes of the people and keep people from losing heart.  So why then was the information on something as terrible as the anomaly, the cycle of resets and the coming end of the world, accessible to a mere sentry with an unofficial interest in science?
Only three people other than Alphys knew about the amalgamates before Frisk. Flowey, who was part of the experiment. Mettaton, whose EX body was being built at the time.  And Sans.  Alphys is terrified of telling anyone about the amalgamates. So then how did a Snowdin sentry who has no business being anywhere near the true lab find out about the amalgamates? Why would she confide to him about them when this is contrary to her characterization and the narrative provides no reason for this one exception?
It is strongly suggested that Sans not only knows about the amalgamates, but helps Alphys take care of them. Due to a combination of his knowledge of the anomaly and laziness, Sans otherwise only bothers with work when it involves trying to stop the timeline wrecking anomaly and taking care of his only remaining family. Given the popular assumption that he worked with Alphys is vastly unsupported by the canon narrative, why would Sans feel obligated to help Alphys with the amalgamates?  What makes them important enough to Sans for him to actively go out of his way to help them out, despite knowing everything will one day reset?
Since we’ve already established that Gaster is very, very likely a known character with an actual role in the game, this means he would be going by another name. Which means there must be some sign that the name he gives in the game isn’t his true name.  Perhaps there is something Asriel (”Flowey”) and the Fallen Human (”Chara” or “[insert name]”) share in common with him that they do not with other characters. Rule of Three and all that. For example, perhaps an introduction like [greeting standard for character] followed by “I’m/I am [name], [name] the [noun].”  This is phrasing used only three times in the entirety of the game.   Two of those times were for characters who go by a different name than what they were originally given. And share a variety of other similarities, such as an association with death symbolism (spirit of the dead; flowers from a grave) and originating from a distant time.  They also make an additional remark hidden somewhere in the game on having changed, chosen, or being given their name. If a third person does these things as well. then they should probably be considered a Gaster suspect.
Once again, this is not everything. I’m merely posting this list as is on the grounds that I’ve been putting this off long enough.
Granted, I’ve been putting it off because:
I’m very self-conscious about anything I write, so it takes me forever to get the guts to post anything (especially meta).
I honestly do not care for Undertale as much as I used to.
I’m dreading having to answer questions regarding this list.
Shenanigans.
