I think I got what you mean. I guess this is a really complex topic, and there's no "one pill to cure it all", indeed. I'll be honest though, I sometimes get worried looking at all the people, often really young (like, 15-18), who think they are trans because they are uncomfortable with gender roles, or misinterpret their symptoms. It's none of my business of course, it's just sad. I guess it's not too much of a deal if they go with other name and pronouns online, or change their style, but if they get on hormones, it can really fuck up their health. I heard it's impossible to get hormones if you are not really trans, but tbh I doubt that. First, there's always "buying the diagnosis you want" thing, and then there's this "telling the doctor what's needed to get hormones" thing (that's one of the reasond I wondered why no one uses brain scans). Considering that, from what I see at least, "transphobe" became the new "communist", I can see doctors giving prescriptions instead of trying to see if the patient actually needs it or would benefit from psychological therapy more. Tbh I would be glad to hear all these fears are not real.

There's never a perfect fix for anything. Almost any medical condition you can think of can be faked to be diagnosed (and on the opposite side of the spectrum you can be misdiagnosed and then doctors will do their best to keep saying that is what you have, rarely finding that it was actually a misdiagnosis).

In general though those who get a diagnosis that isn't theirs, know what they're doing and know better. In order to fake your way into a diagnosis you have to know what is required of the real thing, and have to know that what you have isn't that, then you have to claim all these things you know are not true.

So for the majority, most people won't get much past the whole name, pronouns, clothing, thing. Expecially if they're under 18, as most childeren will only be at best given hormone blockers. Its possible to manage to get hormones before 18, but you'll need supportive parents and you still won't get it till around 16 or 17. An adult can get hormones easier, informed consent does exist for that, but you still have to talk to a doctor.

In any case to go farther then just social you have to, even for the easiest methods (informed consent with pro lgbt providers) still talk to a doctor that will inform you about all of the effects that it causes, ask about why you want it and what you want from it, do a full talk about everything involved in it (and do some bloodwork). If you manage to do all that talking and sign several pages worth of papers, then you either need it, or clearly don't care that you don't and know better.

The medical industry is already unfortunately difficult, to the point of refusing to treat people who do desperately need it. I'm not going to even pretend to say I'm sorry that I just don't feel sorry for anyone who purposely goes out of their way to get what they clearly don't need. Its like with anything else even remotely medical, people fake it. Fake service animals, which force people to either make it even harder for those who have a real one to just live a life, or to put up with a bunch of pets dressed up as service animals for fun. Fake pain to get pills for addictions. Fake disorders to get away with being an asshole or to get sympothy and money. It shouldn't come down to make the life of real people harder for those who chose to fake shit.

Thank you for the answer and sharing your experience! I'd like to talk a bit about the things you talked about, partially to share and partially to ask your opinion, I guess. My apologies if this is oversharing or insensitive. I think talking about the "brain sex" and dysphoria being distress from having "brain map" of one sex while physically having another, basically a neurological condition would be really beneficial, because, I think, it explains things better, while others, including the ones you mention, still leave enough room for it being all the things people who deny the existence of transgender say. I have only my own experience, of course, but, for example, the disassociation part... I have had depression for years, and during particular bad periods (months) I felt life like watching a movie. Or the name and pronouns things... I don't like using my official name, never really felt like it's about me, I suspect because my family never used it (they wrote into documents a female name and called me a boy's one). Speaking of pronouns, I once got into community that used only male grammatical (the language wasn't english), female one was used only as insult and if you used it for yourself it was basically like saying "Hi, I'm stupid and you can treat me like an idiot with in invalid opinions". At first it felt a bit weird to talk of myself as if I was a guy, but then I got so used to it it felt weird to use female grammar and I had to relearn it. Not going to lie, still feels weird sometimes. Also I happen to be what people call GNC now, of sorts: I dress "masculinely", work in "male dominated" area, have "boyish" interests, "think like a man" (that was something to be accepted as a compliment), was uncomfortable with female characteristics of my body (because having breasts is slutty, having periods is dirty and something to be ashamed of, the usual)... I guess some people would say that I'm trans guy in denial, but I don't think that, I'm good with how my body feels and I don't think all the "GNC" things have anything to do with gender. What I try to say is that it seems to me sone things trans people use to describe their condition can look like symptoms of other things, from depression to internalised misogyny or homophobia, so I guess raising awareness about the neurological side of things would be beneficial for all, including people who are confused about these things.

A lot of conditions have symptoms that overlap with symptoms from other conditions. There are a ton of different conditions that can cause disassociation, there are even different conditions that can cause types of dysphoria/dysmorphia. The difference comes down to what the root cause is, which really just translates to what treatment can a doctor give you that actually gets rid of the symptoms. In my cause transition gets rid of the symptoms. In your case a somewhat forced transition didn't really solve any symptoms, just changed how society treated you.

There is a large group of people who insist that being trans isn't, by definition, about having dysphoria or brain sex. So you don't hear many talk about it because even those of us that do believe in having dysphoria to be trans, and brain sex, end up not talking about it as much just to avoid the drama of being screamed at by people who think you can be trans just because you said you are (as in, possibly living exactly as you were while saying your cis, but now saying your trans, or only changing some gender role type things and saying your trans).

But even with there being less talk about brain sex and dysphoria, theres a lot of people who learn about it from just knowing someone whos trans. Because even if the person themself doesn't really mention the words dysphoria or brain sex, they can still see and hear about how that trans person does things like bind or tuck, and see how clear it is that its about the body, not gender roles. I agree it would be great if we could just talk about brain sex and dysphoria. But with the state the world is in about that, our biggest way of making an impact is existing and showing that existance. When people see people like me, people who clearly are trans because of the body being distressing, and not because of gender roles, they see the truth, that being trans isn't about chosing gender roles, or chosing at all. Because even though yes they'll see I'm not holding to the gender roles of my birth sex, they can also see that thats not what I focus on. They can see that I've done things to change my body, done things that if I wasn't uncomfortable wouldn't be worth doing.

So I agree it would be great to be able to talk about brain sex and dysphoria more, I disagree that its necessary. Symptoms rarely belong to only one disorder, that fact just needs to be more well known. Those who argue about the existance of trans people may be able to try to pin those arguments into still working on someone whos dysphoric, but if they even hear about dysphoria they'll be pretty unlikely to actually bother focusing on that over just continueing to argue about those who claim to be trans and claim not to have dysphoria. Because if they've heard about dysphoria that means they've listened to a trans person talk, and if they're listening they'll also hear them say the reasons that dysphoria isn't just some over reaction or a different disorder disguised, but rather just another medical condition. Transphobes, despite having access to information, are still focused on the type of person who says they are trans, but either doesn't transition, or just does some gender role type things, name and pronouns, and maybe starts hormones thinking they can pick and chose the affects. They could focus on and argue about actualy dysphoric people who need to transition, but mostly they don't.

Do you think homosexual trans men should be forced to identify as straight? Do you find the existence of gay men-trans women relationships politically inconvenient? I have a fiance, I am a trans man, hes attracted to me because of male sexual characteristics, he is not attracted to female sexual characteristics.
