i didnt want to put this in the Main Text but I do often wish on FR we knew more about which artists did what art! I understand why it's kept largely anonymous, and it's not really Standard practice for pet sites, but I find it fascinating - I would really enjoy if there were sometimes some like 'behind the scenes' progress pics or like, thought process of Why things are drawn as they are. For example, a few months back I got into an Friendly Debate with my good pal @flightdescending over Varnish/Lacquer and how the names made no sense to me.

RL Varnish and Lacquer don't (to my [admittedly small] knowledge) leave streaky colour changes, if they Did they would be like, Badly Applied. I got very stuck on the Name Must Mean The Pattern Is Something To Do With Wood, so I wondered if they were inspired by the chatoyancy certain woods have - which is the name for the shimmery/gemlike quality some woods have -

but you can't name a gene Chat/Toyancy so maybe? But then WHY Varnish and Lacquer! Where the genes based off of a Specific Image that influenced the colour and shapes? I needed to know (to WIN the ARGUMENT) and managed to figure out which FR artist drew them and PM'd them and got this response:

And i just think its fascinating! I love finding out thought processes behind art decisions! Some are pretty obvious, like all the animal inspired gene patterns, but some aren't! Why is this years fest fams snakes with flowers? Did an artist just really fancy doing some lovely drawings of flowers and Also snakes? Who drew them too! They're all really nicely done and plants are notoriously hard to draw

Who's that GUY in the Magic Mirror familiar?

I always assumed the pink one was Talona (the lead Harpy??) which implied the green must be SOMEONE of equal importance to be a kind of 'spooky shock' to find in a mirror - but thinking now that was perhaps a lot of assumptions on my part!

Why do many NPCs have close-but-not-quite colours to the FR wheel and are almost never triple gened? Is that an intentional decision that NPCs should look more unique or just because the art looked better like that?

Realistically a lot of the time the answers to 'Why did you do it like this?' is 'IDK thought it was cool :)' but sometimes there is surprising hidden origins and i think thats Neat. like when they'd do QnAs back in the day tl;dr it would be nice to know who drew these pretty trees :)

ok so this started because, the thing about dusthides is that they have a very cool thing going on with their wing, where the secondary is only visible on the underside of the wing and not the top. unfortunately, only one pose (F) shows this off at all, so I wondered if the M pose could be altered to show the back wing to emphasize that trait. and also i thought it would be cool if the secondary was also on the underside of the plating, which i then had to add more of, and then also i had to draw the F pose to see if i could reposition the tail to show off THAT attribute. and then since i was drawing them ANYWAY i just redesigned some other things. for fun. i dont think i did it super great but it was a fun exercise!!

#i have come around a little to dusthides #i Do really like their Wing Thing #but it is also so odd that only the one pose shows it off at all #dusthides

Soooo good the chameoatl? so sweet face look at them... the Eldritch Amalgam fae with the squid head and insect legs! So dynamicly posed maraquan shoyru looking guardian look at them! they dont need to be a looooong noodle we all know the snapper turtlegater is incredible. love a Shelled Beast

a little dome headed freak?? they SHOULD be freaky and weird! more weird wildclaw everyone loves the featherwings

kangarootcher... put that pearl inside a pouch blind bat nocturne with the BIG ears NO eyes NO problems!! and of course... Igoridgeback the BEST henchman of ALL TIME! hes got it all: the Spikes, the Hunch, the Nasty Grabby Claws to clack ominously, the tiny wings to flap about doing Ominous Business

more ancient+'s (first set here), this time featuring aethers, sandsurges, banescales (a second time), and dusthides

For the aether, I just wanted to really lean into the mothiness... and make a hatchling that doesn't hide its extra pair of legs. seriously, why does the actual aether hatchling hide its extra pair of legs... that's like, the Whole Point. I also thought it'd be fun to play with primary/secondary placement, so the aether's wings actually use its primary

Sandsurges, uhhh.... this is the most radical departure from the canon, because I kind of can't justify anything about the canon sandsurges. If they're supposed to be burrowers, why do they have cheetah bodies? Or the big clunky horns? And if they're supposed to be sand sharks, why do they have TWO sails when one would sell the shark-ness more? So this version features big mole mitts and monitor bod, with a single really BIG sail.

Banescale (2) - just trying to lean into (what i think) was the theme of the banescales, which is that they're "demonic" dragons compared to coatls being "angelic". So made the tail more obviously a trident and gave it crazy little grabby hands on its wings, and tore them up like aberrations. it turned out looking a lot like a man. sorry.

Dusthides... I'm not really sure... what's going on with the canon dusthides? they look like they're trying to be isopods and pangolins and armadillos. So here's my take on that. The armor plates are prehensile and can fold upwards. this is pretty much just a vestigial feature of them originally being wings because it's not like they can fly with them lol. again experimenting with secondary placement by having the armored legs, head, and tail tip be the secondary. it doesn't curl up into a perfect ball, but neither do pangolins. i also made it fluffy because i like fluffy dragons. it can't wear clothes anyway. it ended up turning out kind of centipede-y

i feel like auraboas and aberrations are like... fine. Any changes i would make to them would be pretty minimal (mostly I just want shrinkage on the auraboa wings and more exciting prim/sec placement on the abes) so i'm probably not going to do ancient+'s of them
