Tarhos peels an apple with his claws intently listening to Irelia's concerns, "I trust that Haru and I raised you well enough to make decisions for yourself and I will never speak ill of your choices. There is relief for a tension Irelia had not known she had been carrying, the acceptance welcome not because she needed the approval — Tarhos and Haru, of all people, would know once the dancer is set on something it is not a simple thing to make her change her mind — but because not having it would make her discontented. She loves them, the family she had found, as she loves the one she lost.

But she loves Kayn as well, and she would rather they weren't at odds.

It is a word she had hesitated to use, love. Irelia had not known what it felt like to love someone like that, not before him. Yet there is no other word to describe what she feels. For all his perceived flaws and every accusation one of her fathers had laid in front of him, he is nevertheless a safe harbor; the one she can be herself with, no fear of judgment or impossible standards, no love for the myth more so than the woman. She had not expected to fall in love, either; it happened easily, though, drawn to him as she had been. Kayn has her heart; he has all of her. It scares her still, the lengths she knows she would go for him, devotion and care that would weather anything in the world, that could only ever be undone by his own hand.

She takes the fruit and bites it gently, absentminded as her concerns continue to occupy her thoughts. ❝ I'm glad you don't hate him, ❞ A genuine confession accompanied by an earnest look; it does mean a lot to her. ❝ Kayn is really important to me.❞
