the reason Jenny Nicholson's review of the starcruiser hotel is so damning imo is that she went in completely non-cynically. if you've watched her previous videos it's apparent she loves both star wars and theme parks; she's basically the ideal customer for an experience like this. she was clearly trying to engage with the story elements and experience everything the trip had to offer, she likes kitschy animatronics and special effects - and she still had such a bad time! it's blatantly obvious the actual customer experience was an afterthought to things that would make good photo ops and tiktoks, and the whole trip relied on the functionality of an app that seems thrown together last minute. as someone who also loves star wars and theme parks, it's a real let down - but this is basically what disney has been doing since they bought the star wars ip, so I guess I'm not surprised.

come on this is exactly what i was talking about with "hey its weird people's response to fair criticisms of anime fandom is to start calling anyone vaguely short a loli/shota" like you realize this is odd. there's words to separate their meanings from and reclaim but loli and shota are explicitly tied to pedophilic content and the continued tying of short people = loli/shota does not do anything except perpetuate the infantilization of little people in an ableist way as well as is frustrating for adults who are simply short or look young

Ai Weiwei, “Dropping a Han Dynasty Urn,” 1995
An astonishingly irreverent piece of work.  This triptych features the artist dropping a Han Dynasty (206 BC - 220 AD) in three photographs.
When questioned about the work, he suggested that the piece was about industry: “[The urn] was industry then and is industry now.”  His statement, therefore, was that the urn was just a cheap pot two thousand years ago, and the reverence we feel toward it is artificial.  One critic wrote: “In other words, for all the aura of preciousness acquired by the accretion of time (and skillful marketing), this vessel is the Iron Age equivalent of a flower pot from K-Mart and if one were to smash the latter a few millennia from now, would it be an occasion for tears?”
However, the not-so-subtle political undertone is clear.  This piece was about destroying the notion that everything that is old is good…including the traditions and cultures of China.  For Ai Weiwei, this triptych represents a moment in which culture suddenly shifts (sometimes violently), shattering the old and outdated to make room for the new.

also does anyone else feel like the death of public spaces and the subsequent digitization of all socialization has led to the downfall of subculture and the rise of aesthetic, which has in turn fostered a pervasive feeling of inauthenticity, as if we are, and are surrounded by, posers attempting to infiltrate a subculture that doesn't exist? clap if the death of public spaces and the subsequent digitization of all socialization has led to the downfall of subculture and the rise of aesthetic, which has in turn fostered a pervasive feeling of inauthenticity, as if we are, and are surrounded by, posers attempting to infiltrate a subculture that doesn't exist

therapyspeak in interpersonal conflict is so dehumanizing bc its never the start of a conversation, it never invites any feedback or problemsolving, its always just these big micdrop moments, these sacrosanct rules of life that apply regardless of context & if you dont get it youre just too unenlightened & need to 'work on yourself.' icky
