‘ we’ve come a long way, you and i. ’

the sun is setting in twilight town  ,  just as it always is.  the beach here is  different  than the shores of the islands riku grew up on  ,  the water is warm even now  &  the tide never  quite  makes it to his toes.  sand is stuck to the bottom of his feet  &  the back of his legs  &  somehow  ,  riku is  sure  it found a way into his hair  ,  which he  hates  the thought of digging out later.

but  ,  he thinks  ,  it could be  pouring  rain  ,  or they could even be surrounded by  heartless  &  there’s still no other place he’d rather be  ,  because he’s  here  ,  alive  ,  with someone he cares about  &  who cares about him.

it’s almost  funny  to him  ,  that it’s  roxas  sitting in the sand next to him  ,  popsicle half hanging out of his mouth as they watch the waves.  riku’s expression is  amused  ,  humming as he looks over at roxas  ,  popsicle now in hand as blue eyes meet his  ,  &  riku’s almost  surprised  to find his heart flutter a bit.

riku gives a quiet  snort  in response  ,  shrugging as he leans on his hands  ,  watching the sun��  inch  below the waves that roll in.  he  certainly  never expected to have  this  with roxas: holding hands when they walk through town  ,  finding any  &  every reason to be close.  because if you had asked him a  year  ago  ,  the person riku would’ve wanted next to him was someone else entirely.

but things are  different  now  ,  &  riku’s almost happier it’s  not  sora next to him as he brushes roxas’ arm with his own. 

‘ i didn’t think we’d get here, like this. ’ 

under the sand  ,  riku settles his hand over roxas’  ,  not quite holding it  ,  but not so far from it.  &  it wasn’t as though riku had ever been  immune  to seeing bits  &  pieces of sora in roxas  ,  but they weren’t the same  ,  &  maybe that’s for the  better  .  his fingers curl around the blonde’s hand gently  ,  looking at him only out of the corners of his eyes  ,  smile softening slightly.  riku was never  good  with his emotions  ,  always feeling too much or too  little  ,  destructive in both his anger  &  his care.  it was no secret that  balance  was not his strong suit.

perhaps it made sense he wound up like this  ,  with someone just as unbalanced as him.

‘ not that i’m complaining about it. ’ 

if he can tell the slight color in roxas’ cheeks is from  more  than the sun  ,  riku doesn’t say anything  ,  not right now.  he closes his eyes for a moment  ,  listening to the waves crashing on the shore  &  the sea breeze blow around them. 

‘ another year like this....i don’t think it’d be so bad. ’ 

he’s  grinning  now  ,  &  fixes his gaze on roxas fully  ,  who looks away in  embarrassment  .  it’s so very  roxas  of him that riku can’t help but  laugh  ,  the hold on roxas’ hand loosening slightly  ,  if only for riku to lace their fingers together.  it’s  adorable  ,  &  riku can’t help the urge to lean over  &  press a kiss to his cheek with that same grin  ,  giving his hand a squeeze. 

‘ c’mon, we should probably head back.  i don’t wanna think about all the sand stuck to me anymore. ’ 

no  ,  riku thinks  ,  another year of this might not be so  bad  after all.

&  oh  ,  if he had one weakness in this world  ,  it was sora.  sora  ,  with big sad eyes asking him to stay  ,  &  sora with a kind  ,  bright smile dragging him out to play  ,  &  sora  ,  reaching for his hand when he was shrouded in  darkness  .

if there was anything in this world that could  ruin  him  ,  it was this. 

‘ sora... ’ 

carefully  ,  as if the boy would  break  under his touch  ,  riku grabs his wrist  ,  that same  gentle  smile crossing his face  ,  a little bittersweet  ,  like a cup of coffee without enough sugar.  he is no  gentle  thing  ,  but he has  always  made himself whatever sora needs.

&  if sora needs him to stay  ,  he’ll stay. 

‘ i’m not going anywhere, promise. ’ 

&  that smile stays on his face until in turns to something  bitter  in his mouth  ,  until the coffee’s gone cold  &  not worth drinking  ,  until the grounds are all that left  ,  bitter  &  clumping in your teeth  ,  a hard to swallow mouthful like him.

‘ i’m not crying. ’ 

it’s the same tone of voice he used to give the other kids when they’d make fun of him  ,  or the old ladies on their porch when he walked home alone from the pier  ,  or sora’s mom when she used to pull him into one of those  tight  warm hugs because she knew he was sad about his parents being gone again  ,  even though they were gone all the time.

even now  ,  he wipes at his eyes with his arm  furiously  ,  sniffling as he draws his knees up to his chest.  there’s a  hole  in his chest that has ached  &  ached  &  something  dark  has come crawling out of it  ,  chewing on his ribs until they  break  under the strain.  he’s been alone before  ,  he was  always  alone for the longest time  ,  before sora came  &  suddenly he was  never  alone.

&  then he was alone again  ,  with a sora-shaped hole in his heart that he never quite knew how to fill.  all the bad parts of him had come  flooding  out  ,  turned into a violent  &  cruel beast with a taste for blood.  so he does not cry  ,  he holds in every tear he’s ever wanted to shed in hopes that it might  kill  this ugly thing inside him  ,  the parasite that consumes every good part of him  ,  if any ever existed.  he had always been sharp edges  ,  blunt words  ,  a rattlesnake trod upon  ,  unsure what to do when someone came that close  &  didn’t hurt him.

he doesn’t look at sora when he lowers his arm  ,  chin pressed against his knees as he look out at the ocean  ,  tied-up hair blowing in the breeze.

it’s quite  bold  of sora to assume riku ever saw himself getting married  ,  let alone had a  dream wedding  really.  it’d be a  lie  to say he hadn’t thought about it  ,  but  still  ,  that’s an  odd  question  ,  even for sora.  taking a handful of sand  &  letting it run through his fingers  ,  riku  sighs  ,  cheeks a little  pink  as he looks towards the ocean.

POKEMON VERSE.

Riku is, without a doubt, a strong Trainer.  So strong, in fact, that even though he failed to defeat the Champion, he was offered a spot in the Elite Four, as a Dark type master.  More than half of his team is made of Dark type Pokemon, and his team is incredibly strong in its own right.  He gives his all in every battle, and leaves nothing on the line.  At age 18, he is currently one of the youngest members of the Elite Four.

When he’s not running himself into the ground working for the League, Riku likes to travel.  His team is as follows.

ABSOL - LVL 69  ♀ -  The first Pokemon Riku ever met on his journey.  She found him shortly before disaster struck his home, in the form of a terrible storm.  Despite her presence, the town was utterly unprepared, and nearly wiped out, but over the years, has managed to rebuild.  Since that day, Absol has been by his side.  Her strength serves as a testament to Riku’s own, and she trusts his judgement completely.  Besides being one of his strongest Pokemon, Absol is also his closest companion.

MURKROW - LVL 68 ♂ - Murkrow, or Murky as he’s affectionate called, was a trade that Riku hadn’t thought too much about.  He’s stubborn as hell, and never wanted to listen to Riku in the beginning, until his strength was proven and respect was earned.  Murky was never treated badly, and never is, but he’s quite rude on occasion, and is often chided for it by his master.  However, in battle, the little bird is a force to be reckoned with, the quickest of Riku’s team.  They may not always see eye to eye, but Murkrow is loyal when it counts, and follows Riku’s commands without hesitation.

HOUNDOOM - LVL 69 ♂ - Houndoom is a good friend to RIku, although somewhat flighty and easily distracted.  He means well, however, and Riku knows that at his core, he’s trying hard, and that’s what counts.  They met when he was still a Houndour still, being chased off by a group of Wingull for accidentally disturbing them.  Riku originally didn’t want him on his team, but Houndour refused to stop following him, often close behind his heels wherever he went.  They’re bonded quite thoroughly now, and Riku can’t imagine him not being a part of his team anymore.

INKAY - LVL 67 ♂ - This little guy was caught while Riku was fishing, but not in the water.  He had decided to take up residence under Riku’s jacket, and got so startled he sprayed ink on it, and then began to cry.  He’s timid in nature, especially around strangers, and has a tendency to hide in Absol’s fur when he can.  When scared or provoked, he tends to spew ink that’s difficult to get rid of.  He’s not a strong battler, but he’s quick and clever, and outsmarts opponents when following Riku’s commands, which he always does.

DRAGONITE - LVL 70 ♀ - She was a gift from Sora as a Dratini.  She’s overly friendly, going so far as to crush people in hugs upon meeting them.  Affectionate and kind, she relishes in attention in the form of cuddles, head scratches, and baths.  Not to be underestimated, though, as her loving and friendly nature belies brute strength in battle.  She’s never used in his official League matches, but she loves the thrill of battle.  Besides Absol, Dragonite is Riku’s go-to Pokemon when battling outside of the League, and she loves to fly anytime she can. 

RIOLU - LVL 15 ♀ - Hatched from an Egg Riku received after a match, Riolu is is fiesty, and often prefers to do her own thing instead of following any commands.  She’s stubborn, arrogant, and altogether a pain in the ass to train.  However, Riku has no plans to part with her, nor give up on her, though she’s quite the headache for him outside of work.  That said, she is easily won over with berries and treats, adoring the Poke Puffs of Kalos above all else.  She isn’t seen in real battle because of her low level, but she’s getting stronger with every day Riku works with her, and although small, there’s a bond they share that can never be broken.
