About the AO3 "No Guest Comments for a while" warning

If you're not following any of AO3's social media accounts you might be in the dark as to what kind of "spam comments" have engendered this banner at the top of the site:

These spam comments have been posted about a great deal on the AO3 subreddit for the past couple of days. Initially they comprised a bunch of guest (logged out users) bot comments that insulted authors by suggesting they were using AI and not writing their own fics. Some examples, from the subreddit:

But it then escalated to outright graphic porn images and gifs being posted in comments, again by logged out 'Guest' accounts. Obviously, I'm not going to give examples of those, but between these two bot infestations, AO3 has clearly decided to act and has temporarily closed the ability to post comments for users who are not logged in with an AO3 account.

Unfortunately, this means that genuine readers who don't have an AO3 account won't be able to leave comments on fics that they enjoy.

If you are a genuine reader who doesn't yet have an AO3 account, I strongly suggest getting yourself on the waiting list for one. More and more AO3 authors are now locking their fics down to registered users only - either due to these bot comments or concerns about AI scraping their work - which means you're probably missing out on a lot of great stuff.

Hopefully guest commenting will be enabled again at some point soon, but I suggest not waiting until then. Get yourself on that list.

Wait times are going to be longer than usual at the moment, due to the current Wattpad purge [info on Fanlore | Wattpad subreddit thread], but if you're in line, then your invite will come through eventually.

Just accidentally made a new OC for a game I’ve never played (Rune Factory: Tides of Destiny/Oceans), got attached, and now I’m sad he’s not actually a character beyond a name drop in Lucas’ extensive backstory.

I doubt I’ll actually write the actual story I envision for him, so I’m gonna tell y’all about Dragon Priest Sedge instead.

To start, let me explain some context. In RF5, Lucas mentions several easter eggs to prior games. Though he doesn’t specifically reference RF:ToD, I was browsing all of the festivals for fic reasons and found this tasty bit of lore.

I just kept staring at that last line, wondering how lanterns could calm a storm, and who would even come up with an idea like that.

Since Fenith Island’s current Dragon Priestesses all have floral-inspired names, I figured their ancestor should also have a plant name — hence, Sedge. Appearance-wise, I picture him with the girl’s same brown-yellow eyes and with olive green hair. He’s thin and lanky like his namesake, especially when he becomes old aged.

After the world almost ended because of the Legendary Golem, Sedge was the first Dragon Priest to help Fenith Island rebuild. He’s particularly good at conversing with runeys through Spirit Singing, so they served as a liaison to help him calm the riled up ocean spirits.

Lucas met Sedge several years after the Lantern Festival became a local tradition, and they became fast friends. Both of them are Spirit Singers, after all, and Sedge loves sharing stories about his community.

Even after Lucas had to return to the continent, the two of them kept in contact via letters until Sedge’s passing.

Fans' attitudes toward AI-generated works

Irina Cisternino, a PhD candidate of Stony Brooke University, is writing their research on topics related to technology, art and fandom. You can participate by filling out a survey and additionally, signing up for an interview. The survey is expected to last until at least the end of April, those, who signed up for the interview, will be contacted later. You need to be at least 18 years old to participate in either, be able to understand and speak English and identify as a fan.
