           as the two lounged on the couch, each one on their end of it &. legs over each other while liana while liana flipped through channels to find something good enough to watch; she heard her sister think out loud. turning to look at the other, she let out an exaggerated sigh with just an exaggerated roll of her eyes but her lips were curved into a small smile. 

          “ no one ‘ puts up with you ’, you goof. ” she chuckled and crossed the barrier to pull the other into a tight embrace. “ i personally don’t even think i’d be here if it weren’t for you. ” pulling away, the smile on her face dimmed as she looked at dani with a slight tilt of her head, “ what’s got you thinking like that ? ”

she sighs into the hug, pressing her face into the crook of her sister’s neck. they’d been through so much together. dani’s younger days spent tiptoeing warily around her, worried that her facade would finally be shattered, only to realize she’d found someone she could truly be herself with.

she bit at her lip nervously under the scrutiny of lia’s extraordinarily perceptive eyes. “just worried, y’know? i’m barely around anymore because i’m always in the damn hospital, and when i’m off work i’m such a drag i don’t see how anyone would want to spend time with me.” she shrugs, coughing up a hollow laugh.

He was slumped over a textbook, cross legged on the floor in the on-call room. He was also scarfing down the cold Chinese food as the third part of his late dinner. The break was nice, he was tired and stressed and had to be back out in twenty. But the break was nice. Seeing Dani, long-time medical school friend/fellow survivor, was nice too. “Did you hear about the Endarterectomy tomorrow? I’m trying to get in on the lung transplant on Wednesday but, beggars can’t be choosers, you know?”

she cannot muster anything but a weak smile as she leans over to grab a dumpling from his box. they’d been in the hospital for what felt like their whole lives already, breathing in the sterile smell of the wards and ( very rarely ) the operating theaters. “god. what i’d give to get in on that surgery.” it was tough. med school was a small pond of big fish already, and now that they’d moved on to their residencies, the fish had become sharks, biting at people they once considered friends just to get ahead. the one thing dani was thankful for was the constance of fletcher’s friendship, even as the battlefield grew harsher around them. “fingers crossed for ya ! the cardio attending doesn’t seem to like me that much...”

she was early. half-past three and already she was sat at her usual booth,  fingers twisting knots into her hair nervously as watchful eyes remained fixed on the door. it would be lying to say she hadn’t imagined this moment — it was all she’d thought about for weeks after he disappeared from her life without a trace. sitting down and talking. feeling like he cared about her. her first pride. she had been to so many mutant rallies and parades before but she had never really been to pride before. perhaps in a very distant memory she had gone but this was her first pride SINCE coming out. it was IMPORTANT. she was more comfortable with herself now and she had confidence in her sexuality. “ you having fun ? ! ” turns to the person beside her as she’s watching the parade in front of them. naomi dane-summers is ALL SMILES today, which is something that naomi isn’t even used to being.

dani loved pride. with a passion. it was a huge party in support of so many people in her life, and the one place she’d initially felt acceptance as she began the journey of discovering her own sexuality years ago. she made it a point to go every year, no matter what city she was in. still, life as a fresh resident at paragon’s only hospital made for plenty of sleep-deprived nights that even the strongest espressos couldn’t cure, and the girl’s exclamation jolted her out of her drowsy daze. “y—yeah ! you didn’t just wake me up or anything..” her voice trailed off weakly, a bashful smile creeping onto her face.

she presses a kiss to each of the kids’ heads as they say their goodnights. they’re absolute angels, and also constant reminders that she is hopelessly inadequate in comparison to the brilliant way estela juggles her family and the rest of her responsibilities. “yeah, ‘course. take your time!” her eyes follow the three of them as they march down the hall, a wistful smile floating across her face. when would she be able to have something like this?

pink tongue pokes out the corner of her mouth — a childish, petulant expression. “not literally just you, dumbass ! ‘s just good to be home. around family.” she chokes back a giggle as a droplet of melted ice cream slides past his lips onto his chin. maybe he won’t notice till someone else points it out, and the image of eli’s embarrassed face sends a spark of mischief running through her. 

her heart warms as the boy checks off all the people closest to him in the brief recap. “all together, yeah, you mentioned! it’s so ... grown up, wow. who would’a thought, huh?”

there weren’t many people dani could be truly, unabashedly herself with. and even though she’d been spooked by liana’s telepathy in the past, her sister had never wielded it against her maliciously, and it’d only helped them to grow closer with time.

she’s bouncing on her toes as she looks at her father expectantly. dani had woken up at five in the morning, filled with excitement for her first father’s day back home in a while, bustling around the kitchen in an effort to make everything just right, all for her father. her biggest fan, her most ardent supporter. he deserved the best.

and that’s what she tried to give him. balancing the tray of food gingerly on the bed beside him, dani poked him in the arm to rouse him from his deep sleep. “surprise !!” the grin on her face is almost blindingly bright.
