Sleep was a rare thing for Dakota. She’d always been restless, focused – once she set on a task, there was little she could do to pull herself from it. She’d lost track of the hour as she poured over her case files. The sun had long since disappeared behind the horizon, and she hadn’t even noticed. The gears in her mind had only diverted once, and that was only because she realized she was rather desperate for a cup of coffee. As soon as it was done, though, she returned to the task at hand. Her next distraction was her phone ringing in the next room. It was only then that green eyes were torn from her messy, disjointed pages and to the time. That brought about a small jolt of nervousness – a late-night phone call was rarely good news in her world. A nervousness that didn’t entirely dissipate as she saw the name flashing across her screen.
She’d barely gotten the phone to her ear, much less any semblance of a greeting, before words began pouring in on the other end of the line. She let KC finish before she spoke, listening as the woman became almost immediately dismissive of her own concerns. She did her best to sound calming as she spoke, tone slow and even. “Deep breaths, okay KC? You did the right thing. Stay where you are,” she started, making her way to the front door and slipping on her boots. “I’m leaving right now. But i want you to stay on the line with me while I drive over, okay?” Dakota knew better than to be dismissive of any concerns – even if it was well in the realm of possibilities that the sound was just drunk kids or some sort of animal rooting through curbside garbage cans. Dakota slipped out of her apartment and down to her Jeep, doing her best to keep her own background noise to a minimum. “Can you describe it for me? What you heard?”
Tumblr media
Most nights KC was able to settle down and fall asleep with only a few nervous thoughts invading her brain, but tonight was a completely different story. At four in the morning, there was a loud bang in her backyard, followed by the sound of someone, or really something more likely than not, moving around. She was able to ignore it at first, pretend that she was fine, but the longer the rustling around continued, the worse she felt. As illogical as it was, her mind couldn’t let go of the thought that perhaps the man that shot her was out there, back for more. Hiding herself in her closet with the dogs, KC nervously tapped at her phone, debating on calling the police before settling instead on ringing up Dakota’s phone. While she didn’t want to bother the detective at such a ridiculous hour, the woman was perhaps the only person she would have felt entirely comfortable having there when she was already so worked up. She’d been working the investigation since the start and KC trusted her in a way that she didn’t with most people. Putting the phone to her ear, KC started rambling nervously almost immediately, her words coming out rushed and stuttering due to her panic.
“Ah - h-hey, uh…Dakota…erm. Detective Williamson, uh – I don’t um. Whichever is…appropriate, um. I know it’s…I know it uh. It’s really um…late and you’re probably sleeping and um. This is stupid, I shouldn’t even be calling, but there’s something in my yard and it’s really loud and I just…I don’t know. Maybe it’s…maybe it’s him, you know? It could…be him. And uhm. You could maybe..maybe catch him and it’d uh…you could end your investigation or…yeah. Just, you know if…you’re up or…or whatever, if…maybe you wanted to..to come by. It’s  shoot, um. It’s KC, by the way. KC Pelayo. Um. Yeah, you know, this is..it’s probably nothing and you probably don’t need to come and um. I’m so sorry for bothering you, it’s…it’s fine. I’ll sleep in the closet, it’ll be fine. Really, fine. Um. Again. Sorry.”

Dakota liked to give herself credit for situation awareness – it was the biggest part of her job, after all. Being able to walk onto a scene and put the pieces together to craft a feasible narrative. But when she was approached by a girl covered in something (she was a bit afraid to guess exactly what it was), one shoe missing, and looking fairly disheveled, Dakota couldn’t even formulate a guess. She regarded the girl with momentary skepticism expression softening once the other spoke. “I’m uh... afraid that won’t help much.” She started, tone ringing with clear confusion. “What happened, exactly?”

Emma didn’t like to ask for help, that was why she’d tried to open her car door with five milkshakes delicately balancing in her arms. And of course, like it were fate, all five milkshakes tumbled out of her arms and right on to her dress. She groaned and took a step back, her heel snapping on corner of the sidewalk. Naturally, as it were just her luck, she’d forgotten her car keys at home—of course she had. Not knowing what else to do, she limped around until she caught a glimpse of someone nearing her. “I need you to pinch me. Pinch me so I can wake up from this nightmare.” She breathed, wondering how she might have looked; dress stained with sugary beverages, hair tousled by the wind and one shoe missing off her pale feet. “Actually don’t pinch me, I’m sticky. Throw a rock at me.”

When she got the text from Dakota, Cassidy was elbow deep in a puddle of grease changing some parts out in one of her cars. Immediately, she had closed up what she was working on to rush up and shower so she didn’t look and smell like the underside of a car. She was nervous enough about the meeting…date…whatever it was, without also worrying about smelling horrid. Knowing she didn’t have much time, Cassidy left her hair damp and just settled for throwing on whatever she had that was comfortable before heading back downstairs to the garage. She’d looked way better, but it would have to do. Opening the door to the downstairs part of the garage, Cassidy spotted Dakota already poking her head in and took a brief second to gather herself before walking forward and waving a hand. “Hey, sorry. I ah, I was covered in oil and needed to shower off real fast. Um. Hi.”
Tumblr media
Dakota had made it as clear as she could to everyone at the precinct that she would absolutely not be available for at least an hour – the detective had attempted to make it sound like it was work related, but the grin that had managed to peak through had given her away. She was, after all, surrounded by people who had gotten their jobs because they paid attention to detail. On the clock and for her work, the girl was stone. She could be absolutely cold and unreadable – a necessity and a point of pride. When it came to her personal life (when was the last time she’d actually had one of those?), there were cracks in her hardened exterior. Little fissures where light found a way through. She’d have to work on that. For today, though, her lack of a poker face may have come to her aid. Her coworkers were less likely to find a way to interrupt someone actually having a trace of a real life outside the precinct. Just in case, she silenced her phone. It hadn’t occurred to her until she stepped into the garage without sight of the blonde that she hadn’t waited for a response to her hastily sent text. What if Cassidy had cancelled? She had just started to fish the device out of her pocket when she heard soft footfalls nearing her. A soft smile curved her lips as green eyes landed on the damp-haired girl. Her gaze lingered for perhaps a moment too long, so she cleared her throat, awkwardly looking around in in a clear attempt to look anywhere else. “Nice place you’ve got.” She commented. “Is this... uh, is it a bad time? I didn’t even consider that you might need to cancel or might be slammed with appointments. I can come back...” she trailed off, vaguely gesturing toward the door. Rambling. A habit she was so sure she’d kicked in high school. Then, a hint of a smile returned. “Hi.”

Dakota had spent the better part of fifteen minute pacing around the precinct before she finally fired off a text to Cassidy to let the other woman know she was leaving. A less sober Dakota had made plans that the sober version of the woman couldn’t work up the courage to make. In a way, she was glad – but that didn’t make her any less of a nervous mess. Was it a date? And was that a good thing – for either of them? Even the most logical part of Dakota had started to go silent in matters of her ex. The truth of the matter was, seeing the blonde made her happy, and happy was a feeling that hadn’t been on her radar in quite some time. She even found a hint of a smile tugging at the corners of her lips as she pulled up to the garage – between self assurances that this was going to be okay, even if it was just lunch between friends. Heavy boots crunched on the gravel as she approached the open garage door, peaking in for any sight of the blonde.

“They’ve got me in there for eighty sometimes if there’s a boon of sick people coming into the hospital, and I’ve pretty much been able to count on pulling thirty plus hour shifts every few days this week,” She shrugged, a languid motion that disguised any frustration she may have felt at the state of her work week on average. “I think, at this point, I barely have an idea what free time looks like anymore, so the second I get any I’m not going to know what to do with myself.” She scrunched her nose and shook her head, her grin morphing into something closer to a wry acceptance of her situation. “Granted, at this point the only thing I want to do with my free time is get laid,” She paused, humming. “Is that an overshare?”
Tumblr media
"Jesus. I don’t know how you do it,” the detective said, shaking her head. “I don’t think I could be around sickness and misery for my entire week. I think I’d crack after two days.” Dakota grew frustrated with her own job – but it paled in comparison to anyone in the medical field, at least in her mind. She was often in a position of delivering bad news, but she could go days without doing it, on a good week. She suspected it wasn’t true for the other. Green eyes widened in a moment of surprise at the other’s candor, but a laugh quickly escaped her.  She held her hand up, putting a small gap between thumb and forefinger. “Maybe a little,” she teased. With a resigned sigh, she leaned back. “I can’t even tell you how long it’s been. It’s like I joined a covenant instead of the police force. My 21 year old self would be so disappointed if she knew.”

An unfamiliar chime sounded from the detective’s pocket – she was so sure she knew every sound the damned thing was capable of making. Brows furrowed in confusion as she fished it out, trying to find what the notification could possibly be. Her eyes grew wide as she read the words ‘You have a match.’ She tilted her head, feeling momentarily like a confused Labrador hearing words it didn’t quite understand, but it was trying it’s hardest. She thought she’d deleted the app, downloaded in a rare moment of boredom and, if she were being entirely honest, loneliness. Dakota thought she’d deleted it, but technology had a way of evading her when it came to the simplest of procedures. As she opened the app, the slightest smile curved her lips. She prided herself on never forgetting a face, and she was sure Pride had been where she’d encountered this one. Without much thought, she made attempted to find the chat button. It had to exist, right? After fumbling with the device for 30 seconds longer than anyone under 40 should’ve taken, she managed the find the screen. ‘Still gay and single, huh?’ The woman hit send, eye widening as she was immediately filled with that post-send regret.
Tumblr media
Lack of work was really doing a number on her. Lily was drinking more than normal, which wasn’t a lot but still too much for her liking. Thankfully, she could easily work it off in the morning with Cameron. Or the night, if things went in her favor. For laughs, mostly, she pulled out her phone. A few swipes left and right was enough to make things interesting. There were way too many gorgeous people around her. Way too many. She was practically a kid in a candy store– sex store. Same thing depending on who you asked. For a moment, she recognized one of the girls. Only slightly and they had a few Facebook friends in common, but that hadn’t stopped her from giving the good ole stamp of Tinder approval. Normally, it would have but those striking green eyes certainly did something for her. Clearly, she had a type but that needed to stop ASAP. @dakotawilliamson

Lazily, her face stretched in a wide grin, laxer than it would have been without the alcohol in her system. Otherwise she would have been a lot more closed off, harder to just ease up and be happy to talk to Dakota. This was a lot easier for her to deal with and she was glad she was a few deep. “Don’t bet that’s true at all. You’re the most important one on the force probably.” Cassidy corrected, sounding very serious for a moment. She didn’t actually know if that was true, but her drunk head believed it.
“And here I thought you were supposed to be a cop. That sounds like a real criminal thing to say.” Cassidy teased as she got to her feet, steadying herself as best as she could. She didn’t want to admit to just how much the world was spinning as she got up, so she was incredibly glad for the offered hand from Dakota to help keep her balance. “We shall, yes ma’am. Not too far away from here, which is maybe good for me.” She smiled sheepishly again as she took a few shaky steps to the door.
Tumblr media
That familiar lazy grin. Dakota missed that. Missed all of this, if she were being honest. Today she’d been truly and genuinely happy. A big part of it had been the parade itself – people who were proud to be themselves, and loved ones who were proud of them for it. The Wisconsin native found comfort in the fact that those families, blood or otherwise, existed. Since her first run in with Cass, no matter how awkward and uncomfortable it’d been, she hadn’t been able to get the blonde off her mind. Past and present, she made Dakota smile when few things were able to. She chuckled, feeling heat rise to her cheeks at the compliment. It was sweet – something she never knew how to handle. “Somehow I think my Captain might argue with you.” She said, eyes momentarily flickering downward before her gaze landed back on the blonde.
Momentary expression of mischief crossed her features before she brought her index fingers to her lips in a ‘shh’ gesture. “Our little secret,” she teased. “I had a lot of practice. My parents were really fond of locking me out any time I missed curfew. They were always furious when I was inside when the sun came up. Remember the night you helped me climb in my window after we snuck out?” Memory Lane was a dangerous one – but somehow, the girl wasn’t concerned. Not tonight. It felt good to step, not tiptoe, into a conversation. The smile she donned as Cassidy took hand was genuine – easy. “Ma’am,” she repeated with a laugh, brow quirked in question. She followed the mechanic’s lead, doing her best to keep the slightly unsteady girl on her feet.  Dakota was admittedly a bit fuzzy herself, the edges of the world just a bit hazy, but she was stable on her feet – mostly. “You lived in the same place since you moved to Orlando?” She asked, falling in stride beside the other.

Dakota liked to think she could at least connection the dots well enough to get a loose grip on any subject – but she was lost on this one from the start. Still, she listened, donning a polite (if not a bit confused) smile as the brunette spoke. She chuckled at the sentiment, offering a small shrug. “Yeahhh. I imagined that whole ‘free time’ thing so much differently before I somehow ended up 27, working 60 hours on a good week, and hobbies I can count on one hand,” the detective lamented. She leaned forward, resting her elbows on her knees. “Missed out on that one. Only child. Probably for the best – turns out I was kind of a terrible kid. I’m not totally sure my parents could’ve survived a second.”
Tumblr media
“I don’t think I’ve had a proper conversation with my little brother in a good couple of weeks and he called me to tell me all about a new Overwatch update,” She snorted, dragging her fingers through her hair as her head fell back and a lazy laugh passed her lips. “He seems to think I’m gonna have loads of time to play it when I get off work, but he’s really got another thing coming— he keeps telling me it’s different for him because he’s not quite as much of an adult as I am, yet. Twenty-one’s the new seventeen, apparently. Christ, that must mean I’m ancient to him.” She shook her head, amused and bright as she considered her companion with a grin, “Siblings are such a trip, man. Y’know what I mean?”

cassidycarterxo:
“I did trust you for that. You’d be my first choice every time I’m bleeding out in a grimy gas station.” Cassidy replied, trying to lighten her tone and make it a sort of joke. It wasn’t, there was nothing exactly funny about the situation that they’d been through there, but it was easier to joke than to stay serious about it. Especially when she was a little drunk, she didn’t want to get into anything heavy in the conversation. There was no telling what would come up if her drunk brain was allowed to do a lot of the talking there.
Cassidy pulled her phone back once Dakota had put her number in, glancing it over to see how real it looked. It was a full number, so that gave her hope that maybe it would be Dakota on the other end when she called it. “Here’s to hoping the city can handle itself for a few hours, then.” Cassidy chuckled, though she was entirely serious. It would be a real let down if Dakota ended up having to cancel on her because of work. Lifting a side of her lip up in a smile, Cassidy nodded eagerly. “That’d be nice, if you want to. I don’t know how much good I’ll be at unlocking my door right now, anyway, I might need help.”
Tumblr media
Dakota pulled a face of feigned surprise, putting a hand over her heart. “Cassidy Carter, it’s an honor.” She said, playfully sincere. It was easier now, just enough alcohol in her system to dull sharp edges. Easier to gloss over the restless nights she’d had since the event. Her worried mind could go quiet, even if only for a short time.
The brunette chuckled, giving a dismissive wave of her hand. “They’ve got the whole rest of the force. I don’t even think they’ll notice I’m gone,” she said. She wasn’t sure how much tried lie under the words, but she was giving the whole optimism thing a go, even if it wasn’t exactly high-ranking on her skill set. Dakota laughed. “You’re in luck. I”m great at unlocking doors. Top of the resume and everything.” She deadpanned, only to have a small grin creep onto her features moments later. She stood, extending a hand to the blonde and offering a smile. “Shall we?”

Jenni could tell the other wasn’t completely here either by something on her mind or other things She didn’t mind, it’s kind of what she got starting random conversations with random people. She liked it, though, it brought on a thrill of the unknown for her. She also like meeting new and interesting people along the way. Only way to do that was to reach out and make the first move; most people tend to stick to themselves. She found that the best stories were with the people most wouldn’t really bother. Now she just bothers everyone which has worked in her favor and not so much in the past. “Ha, thanks.” She caught the compliment fairly quickly, “It’s not so bad in August if you like the feel of your skin melting off your face.” She laughed, “Honestly, you probably won’t see me outside much at that point. Unless there’s a pool nearby or maybe a bar.” The thought of it was making her sweat a little or not, but she felt like it could if she thought hard enough on it.
Tumblr media
A small grin ticked at the corners of the bartender’s lips as the other took her in stride. It was a quick way for just about anyone to endear themselves to Harley – even remotely know how to deal with her. She chuckled, shaking her head – and immediately regretting it. “You, sunshine, are my kinda girl.” She hummed, fully facing the brunette. “You a local, darlin’?” Harley could count the born-and-raised locals she’d encountered in the southern city on one hand. While she had encountered a fair number of transplants, it was the tourists she found herself conversing with the most.

The wink from Dakota caused her heart to clench up, even with as small of a wink as it was. She had to push down the feelings, knowing that she probably shouldn’t have been having them. Part of her wanted to just assume it was the alcohol and brush it off as nothing more, but she couldn’t be sure. “That’s a hefty task, Dakota, dear. Lot of pressure there.” Cassidy chuckled, though there was a seriousness to her voice that didn’t quite match her laughter. Were it actually them being serious and not just joking around, Cassidy would have taken such a burden very seriously. Dakota’s life was important, extremely important, and it always would be to Cassidy.
A fond smile curled her lips upwards at the surprise she heard in Dakota’s voice and she slowly nodded her head in response. “Totally, yeah.” Cassidy reassured her, a warmness about her features now. Of course she would be happy to go for lunch with Dakota. She owed her at least that, if she wanted it, and really she would have given Dakota nearly anything to make up for how badly she’d screwed up. “Tomorrow is perfect, though, yeah. Absolutely.” Cassidy agreed as she reached clumsily to find her phone. Tapping at it a few times, Cassidy opened up her contacts list and slid it to Dakota. “Here, just toss your number in there and…let me know what times are usually best for you.” She could be as flexible as she needed to be in this case. Some things were just worth it.

Dakota never lost that easy smile, even at the near-serious tone in the blonde’s words. “I trust you,” she said, tiny breath of laughter following. The words, at least tonight, rang true. A part of her would always trust Cassidy, though – for better or for worse. There was only one person in the world who knew Dakota when she wasn’t stern and guarded, and that was the pretty blonde beside her. Even if she’d been partially to blame for the detective’s carefully constructed walls, or at least an easy scapegoat, she knew who was on the other side of them. Feeling a momentary pang of seriousness, a weight to a conversation that had been so light, she continued. “After all. You trusted me not to let you die in a grimy gas station bathroom. It’s the least I can do, right? Return the favor?”
She hadn’t realized that she’d needed reassurance until she had it. “Tomorrow it is.” She agreed, that warm smile creeping up. She took the phone, carefully typing in her own number and giving it a second glance to make sure it was actually her own and her mind hadn’t betrayed her in it’s slight haze. “I’m free at one, unless the whole city goes up in flames.” Dakota hummed before she flashed Cass an almost shy smile as she handed it back. Chewing her lip for a moment, she raised an eyebrow. “Can I walk you home? Just to make sure you get back safely? Civic duty and all.”
