Every single win has to be defended. Forever. I'm sorry. It sucks. The Nazis lost until they stopped losing. The US had abortion rights, and then 50 years later it didn't. Empires fall, and then they invade other countries again. Oppressive regimes are overthrown and replaced with other oppressive regimes. You will never finish the work etc etc etc. Which is why it's so fucking important to be able to acknowledge and celebrate progress, when it happens. The people who came before you didn't put in all that work for nothing, and you aren't, either. You can't save it all for the Ultimate Victory because there is never going to be an Ultimate Victory. There's no such thing as a time when everything is good, and ours shall not be the commune of Heaven.

over on my post about Taylor Swift's enduring heterosexuality there's been a recent rash of people in the tags saying something to the effect of "obviously Taylor Swift is straight, no queer woman would date Matty Healy." which is frustrating, because white bisexual women date little shithead racist men all the time. having a racist boyfriend doesn't mean someone isn't really bisexual, it means that being queer doesn't prevent you from being racist. the thing that makes Taylor Swift straight is that she's straight, not that she's dated objectionable men.

i guess the anime only watchers might not realize this but honestly one of the overarching themes of dungeon meshi is that there is no irredeemable villain at the end of things. like even the biggest bad's behavior is explained and understandable.

so it is goddamn WILD to hear that there are people out there taking the most flat, ungenerous readings of every character that acts even slightly antagonistic. like bro what are you doing. we don't do that here.

The thing is that there's no line. For men of power and authority, there is no price that's so high or depravity so low as can't be justified if it furthers that power and authority. It'll keep going until they've debased themselves in ways you could never have imagined and people still won't believe someone would do such a thing.
