What is a processor?

Put simply, a processor is the ‘brain’ in your Mac. Until relatively recently the CPU was responsible only for taking input, executing instructions and passing on the results. Now, CPUs incorporate short-term memory of their own and, sometimes, graphics processors, or GPUs. In fact, when it comes to choosing a processor for your Mac, deciding whether to opt for one that has an on-chip graphics processor is one of the key decisions you’ll have to make. Apple doesn’t use those names, or even talk publicly about which processor is in each Mac, but it’s known that the current crop of iMacs and MacBook Pros have Kaby Lake processors, which were the most recent available at the time they were released in 2017. So, if you bought it in the last year or so, your MacBook Pro processor is Kaby Lake. The slimline MacBook processor is known as Core M, designed specifically for low power mobile use. The MacBook Air and Mac mini have Haswell processors, as they were released in 2013. The Mac Pro uses a completely different family of Intel processors, designed for high-end workstations and known as Xeon. The Mac Pro, last updated in 2013, uses the Romley variant of Xeon.

What are the important features of a processor?

We’ve already talked about processors that have on-board graphics, such as Intel Iris and Iris Pro. These offer benefits such as taking up less space than discrete CPU and GPU chips and Mac’s that use them tend to be less expensive than those with separate CPU and GPU. However, they also tend to be less powerful.

The other key feature of a processor is the balance between speed and power consumption. CPUs that run faster use more energy and so generate more heat. This doesn’t just mean that fans have to run more often, it also uses more power — and if the Mac is a laptop, runs the batter down more quickly. Indeed, CPUs are often ‘throttled’ so that they don’t run at their theoretical maximum, in order to preserve battery life and reduce heat generation.

What about Turbo Boost?

Turbo Boost is a technology introduced by Intel and is designed to allow processors to run at speeds faster than those quoted on your Mac’s label in certain circumstances. Remember we said that CPUs are often throttled to prevent overheating? Turbo Boost monitors the power consumption and heat of the CPU and removes that throttle when it’s safe to do so. So, for example, a quad-core 2.8GHz Mac Pro could run as fast as 3.8GHz in the right circumstances.

Which processor should I choose?

It’s likely that if you’re buying a new Mac, you’re choice of processor will be made from the Core M, Core i5, and Core i7. Not all Mac models offer a choice of all three. The Core M, for example, is specifically designed to minimise power consumption in mobile devices and is used only in the MacBook. If you’re buying a MacBook Pro or iMac, you’ll have the choice of Core i5 or Core i7. Likewise, if you buy a MacBook Air or Mac mini, although those machines use older versions of Intel processors. And, as we said earlier, if you buy a Mac Pro, you’ll be able to choose from Xeon workstation processors with multiple cores.

There are two decisions you’re likely to have to make: i5 or i7 and dual-core or quad-core. Generally speaking, in terms of speed, a dual-core i5 is the slowest and a quad-core i7 the fastest. That, however, is not the whole story. In order to get the most from multiple cores, you’ll need to be performing tasks that really benefit from the ability to execute more instructions simultaneously. So, tasks like 3D rendering, video editing and working with large images in Photoshop will all improve noticeably with a quad-core vs a dual-core processor.

Core i7 processors have two main benefits over Core i5: larger cache and hyper-threading. The presence of a larger cache means the CPU can store more data locally and so spend less time transferring them back and forth to RAM. Hyper-threading allows the CPU to simulate additional cores. So, a quad-core i7 with hyperthreading behaves like and eight-core CPU.

The benefits of larger cache and hyperthreading are seen in scientific applications, where large calculations are performed and their results stored, as well as the 3D animation and 4K video editing.

Integrated vs discrete graphics

As we discussed earlier, some Intel processors have GPUs onboard. In some Mac ranges, such as the MacBook Pro and iMac, you’ll have the choice of a model with integrated graphics or one with a separate, or discrete, GPU. If you’re going to use your Mac primarily for playing power-hungry games, manipulating large images, or editing video or animation, you should choose a Mac with a separate GPU. On the other hand, if you’re mostly going to use it for writing, email, social media and editing your own photos, a CPU with integrated graphics, like Iris, is fine.

Can I upgrade the processor in my Mac?

That’s a flat no, sadly. There have in the past been Macs that had processors that could be upgraded, but now they’re soldered firmly in place and so your Apple CPU can’t be removed. That makes the choice you make when you buy your Mac even more important. The good news is that for most users every processor that ships with a currently available Mac, even those that haven’t been updated in several years, is absolutely fine and will run as fast as you need it to.

If I can’t upgrade the processor, how else can I speed up my Mac?

Two of the most effective ways to make your Mac go faster are to install more RAM and swap your hard drive for an SSD. Those both cost quite a bit of money, however. A much less expensive and much easier way is to get rid of the ‘junk’ files that can clog up your Mac. Rumors of Apple ditching Intel and designing its own processors for the Mac have been floating around for years, but a new report says the company will finally take the leap in 2021. According to Bloomberg, Apple plans to start selling computers with systems-on-a-chip designed in-house next year, barring any setbacks.

Bloomberg’s report says that Apple is working on three ARM-based Mac processors through an initiative codenamed Kalamata. The chips are said to be based on the A14 processor that will power the next iPhone, but sources say that the first of the three chips will be “much faster” than those found in iPhone and iPad models.

As the report explains, the latest mobile device chips designed by Apple have multiple processing units (also called cores) which handle a variety of tasks for the phone or tablet. For example, the newest iPad Pro has four cores “for performance-intensive workloads” and four cores “to handle low-power tasks to preserve battery life.” The first Mac processors, meanwhile, will have eight high-performance cores (Firestorm) and at least four energy-efficient cores (Icestorm). Apple is reportedly considering including more than 12 cores in the future as well.

Not only will designing its own computer processors allow Apple to reduce its reliance on Intel — it will also allow Apple to have more control over the performance of the Mac and MacBook lines. Apple’s chips are said to double or even quadruple the number of cores in Intel’s chips in some upcoming Macs, such as the MacBook Air, which has just two cores. Bootcamp For Mac Mini

There are headings for MacBook Pro, MacBook Air, MacBook, iMac, Mac mini and Mac Pro. Each heading hides a table by model & year vs. Windows version. There are direct download links for Windows 8 and Windows 7, for 32-bit and 64-bit. I'm a Mac Gaming Enthusiast and i primarily game on my bootcamp partition on my macbook pro 16' 5300M. Steam games are pretty cheap in my country so I have a lot of games in my steam gallery such as Fallout 3,4,New Vegas, Red dead Redemption 2, GTA 5, Sid Meiers Civ 6, Assassin's Creed Syndicate, GRID 2019, Dirt 4, Dirt Rally 2.0, Hell Blade Senuas Sacrifice.

I have looked for a while now. I have found a download page here:

The latest date on anything I can find here is from 2015.

Another page directs me to use the boot camp assistant, but it requires that I have a thumb drive (ready to be reformatted), and I must reboot into MacOS I'm not going to do that. In anticipation to some responses, we can argue about it if you want but it'll be a waste of energy.

Many other situations would involve going to a web page and downloading an installer so I'm asking here for what I'm missing.

Oh, but this section just troubleshoots problems you have with formatting your USB drive and with USB drive recommendations.

I don't know why it's like this. Any other system would just have an installer and even an update agent for download. Is apple protecting IP and software licenses. Possible. Are they keeping users from downloading the wrong versions of stuff? Possible but there are other ways to do that.

They made a choice to handhold users through disk formatting instead of just having a download.

Well, I finished documenting the “device hack” to emulate some sort of S5 solution for the Mac Mini, but most of you probably do not know that Boot Camp Windows does not support S3/S4 WOL (Wake-on-LAN). Say what?! Yes, it seems Apple’s Boot Camp Windows drivers do not support WOL properly, which means once your machine goes to “sleep” you are locked out. You can always move your mouse or hit your keyboard, but what if the Mac Mini is an HTPC being controlled by your Android phone or you are “remoting” in from work? Well, fortunately I have wasted several hours perfecting my own Mac Mini HTPC so you don’t have to, but it is basically another “device hack”. So although Apple gets kudos for the quality of their hardware, they seem to have some problems with the quality of their software although they are probably not really concerned with Windows drivers.

So getting right to the solution, it is basically emulating “movement” of your mouse or keyboard to wake up the machine; because these devices are usually connected via USB which becomes your WOL. To accomplish this, I decided to make use of the StarTech USB to Gigabit NIC adapter, which can stay powered on while the machine “sleeps” and then receive a WOL packet over the network.

I have the Mac Mini 2012 model, so it is sporting USB 3.0 ports but it does not really matter for older models and this particular adapter has a pass-through port, which means I do not lose a USB 3.0 port. Schweet!!! Now you just plug it into the back of the Mac Mini while still connected via Ethernet/WiFi and download the drivers, although Windows 8.1 should automatically install its own. You can also run Windows Update, which will also check for any updated Windows drivers and then you should see an additional adapter in your Network Connections.

Windows 8.1 – Network Connections

Once you finish installing the drivers and the USB adapter appears in your Network Connections list, then you can DISABLE your other connections, if you want. If you are not a networking expert, then it would be best to only have a single network connection handling all your traffic; but if you know what you are doing then feel free to customize your network setup. As for me, I keep only a single connection, since I set up static IP assignment as all my traffic will be going to a single IP for RDP, IIS, etc so there is less confusion (for now). Now right click on the USB connection and click on the Properties option and then click on the Configure button, so we can make sure WOL is configured properly.

After you click on the Configure button, select the Advanced tab and make sure the last few options labeled “Wake on” or “WOL” are all set to ENABLED. Once that is done, then select the Power Management Free screen video capture for mac. tab and make sure all the checkboxes there are SELECTED. This will then ensure that your new USB adapter will respond to WOL commands from your network, which will wake up your Mac Mini from any “sleep” state. You can always further customize your Power Options so the machine sleeps after any amount of time you configure, but the important thing is that you now have “hybrid” sleep support.

Windows 8.1 – Power Options

Remember, S3 is the “sleep” state. but with newer Windows versions you can reach an S4 state, where the machine goes to “sleep” but also prepares itself for hibernate mode. This is useful for when the machine is “asleep” and then the power goes out or you decide to turn off your HTPC remotely using the S5 WOL solution in my previous post. The S4 state is basically an enhanced version of the S3 state, so that your machine will not incur any data loss in the case of power loss, which can come in handy. So you want to make sure you go to your Control Panel in Windows and then open Power Options, where you then click on Change advanced power settings which will give you access to Now you can use any number of WOL tools on your phone, tablet, etc to wake your Mac Mini so you have total control of when you want to use your machine without having to reach for a button.

So there you have it. I have been using my Mac Mini as an HTPC, but some of you are probably wondering why I am bothering spending “extra” on accessories just to have a WOL solution. Well, the reality is that the Mac Mini’s role will expand beyond just an HTPC and probably become a central home server, so it behooves me to have WOL support in case I need to work on it remotely. I already have another Mac Mini running as an ESXi server, so I am able to run virtual machines for development purposes but I would rather have an all-in-one machine. Plus, it is possible that manufacturers will eventually release 16GB DDR3 memory chips; so then the Mac Mini 2012 can go up to 32GB. I really hope so, but now that I have finished documenting the WOL solutions I will be looking to document some of the virtual and software solutions I have running around here. I hope this entry helps someone else out there hoping to use the beautiful Mac Mini as their HTPC or home server solution. 🙂
