Shearer’s geometry puzzles
On his blog MathWithBadDrawings, Ben Orlin reposted a couple of geometrical sangaku-like puzzles by math teacher Catriona Shearer. These are eleven of her personal favorites. If you dare, definitely give them a try!
Tumblr media
Transit Across a Purple Sun. What’s the total shaded area?
Tumblr media
Shearer’s Emerald. Four squares. What’s the shaded area?
Tumblr media
The Pyramid with Two Tombs. Two squares inside an equilateral triangle. What’s the angle?
Tumblr media
Setting Sun, Rising Moon. What fraction of the rectangle is shaded?
Tumblr media
Hex Hex Six. Both hexagons are regular. How long is the pink line?
Tumblr media
Four, Three, Two. What’s the area of this triangle?
Tumblr media
The Trinity Quartet. All four triangles are equilateral. What fraction of the rectangle do they cover?
Tumblr media
The Falling Domino. This design is made of three 2×1 rectangles. What fraction of it is shaded?
Tumblr media
Slices in a Sector. The three colored sections here have the same area. What’s the total area of the square?
Tumblr media
Disorientation. The right-angled triangle covers ¼ of the square. What fraction does the isosceles triangle cover?
Tumblr media
Sunny Smile Up. What fraction of the circle is shaded?

29.11 // woo it's been a while since i've posted anything !!! my excuse is that i've had a rough month or two. tldr; got a concussion in early october, got the flu which overlapped with the concussion briefly, got a cold, and now i have post-concussion headaches and i am still sniffly with an extra side of joint pain as a result of rainy weather :"( the only thing keeping me going anymore is that i have winter break in 4 weeks. i can last that long, right..?
i have a bunch of make up work to do as a result of my various health issues, but i've been slowly getting through it all !! i've been drawing graphs for econ so often i swear i could do it in my sleep, and i'm still annotating readings for english.
also don't remember if i brought this up, but i got bored a few months ago and decided to start vlogging? so that's l!nked at the bottom too :)

As a purveyor of weird/quirky internet things, there are few things I love more than coming across a new little tool to make fun things with. Here's a running list of some of my favorites that I've found!
Games
Bitsy is a "little editor for little games or worlds" and one of my personal favorite tools on this list. A good first start if you want to make a game and have never made one before. It's got a pretty extensive wiki if you want to add audio, animations, etc.
Flickgame is just about as simple as it gets. You get 16 colors and 16 slides, and clicking colors is how you get to different slides. Super easy and fun!
Flicksy is both of the above combined! Make more complicated sprites that lead between branching rooms. Full disclosure, I've never actually made something with this, but it's been on my radar for a while.
Twine is almost too mainstream to put on this list, but it's a great one to know about. It's a tool for making those interactive fiction games where you click on the words to progress. So fun and hugely customizable.
Music
Beepbox is my current favorite way to create music. You get 16 measures and a pretty expansive set of preset instruments, with the option of making your own adjustments. The song is stored in the web address, so sharing is as simple as copy pasting the link! You can also export your music (so that you can add it to your games) UPDATE: Turns out you can have more than 16 measures! I just can't read. That makes it more cool!
Art
Piskel is an easy way to make pixel art sprites and animations. It's easy to use and you can resize sprites too!
Websites
Neocities!!! I cannot recommend this one enough. Build your own websites from scratch! Revel in the vibes of the internet in the late 1990s - early 2000s! This does require some coding knowledge, but there are plenty of resources out there to help. Speaking as someone who had 0 coding skills before making my site, it's very easy to pick up.
Domino is another tool that I've never actually used but have always wanted to. It's "a tool for collaging fragmentary thoughts and ideas without the friction of assembling them into linear writing", and is essentially a bunch of boxes that connect to one another, sort of like a mind map.
ProBoards is a free(!) forum creation website. You can even customize the layout with your Neocities coding knowledge!
Carrd is in no way underground, but as far as easy website tools come, it's one of the best, so it deserves to be here. Plus you can definitely make interesting and quirky things with it - this little game is one of my favorite carrds I've ever seen!
Please add any tools you love in the notes! I just adore finding things like this, and I'm sure there are some I've missed. It's important for creativity to sometimes spend an afternoon making a weird song or website that you never would have normally. I hope this inspires you to create!

Honestly, if you’re not physically disabled or you don’t personally know a physically disabled person in the real world, I don’t want to hear how physical disabilities are taken more seriously than other disabilities. Because once you really begin to notice how genuinely inaccessible our society is, every crack in the sidewalk, every ramp leading to a step, every gravel path that could have easily been paved, long walks to the only ramp in the building, you realize that physically disabled people were never taken seriously.

some of my favourite vídeo essays about art history:
whose migrant mother was this? the story of the native american woman who became the face of the 1930s depression (and got almost nothing for it)
bauhaus design is everywhere, but its roots are political how even a simple choice between what font to use can be a political act
edvard munch: what a cigarette means munch + tobacco = art? (yes we’re still on the topic of art as a political weapon)
art that was never finished how great masters sometimes even didn’t finish stuff. also! the history behind the colour aquamarine
fka twigs on mary magdalene (if you like asmr you’re gonna love this)
having a coke with frank ohara (technically not art history but this video is too good for me not to mention)
video postcard: woman at her toilette a quick dive into my favourite painting of woman impressionist berthe morisot
this documentary about georgia o´keeffe (that ive seen about 10 times)
david hockney on vincent van gogh on love of nature, beauty, attention, and the art of looking (essentially a mary oliver poem in interview format!!!!)

just an fyi to all you bookworms 📚
in case you are, like me, trying to avoid giving more money to amazon, i want to recommend blackwell's books to you. i actually just received an order from them today. they ship worldwide (quite quickly too i must say!) and have really good prices (the prices for shipping are also included within the price of the book itself, so you don't have to worry about that). plus they send you a really lovely bookmark with your order too! i've added an affiliate link to blackwell's, just in case you'd like to order a book or two for yourself. it would be really nice if you used it. have a lovely day 💓

NEW Masterlist
안녕하세요 여러분! Hi everyone! I reorganized my masterlist so that it’s a little easier to navigate my lessons! The only change I made is that instead of organizing my lessons by numbered levels, I’m organizing them into levels based on how advanced they are. The numbered levels contained a smaller number of lessons in them, which was nice since it looked less overwhelming, but I think this new list organizes the lessons less arbitrarily. Also, I think it would be good if you’re new to my blog are unsure of where to start!
Also, don’t worry so much about the order of the lessons within each level. If any grammar structure has “prerequisites,” I’ll probably mention what you need to know in that given lesson if that makes sense. Just browse the list and see what you’re curious about!
All of the lessons that I have already posted will keep the level numbers in their titles (it would take me a while to change every single one of them!), but you can just ignore those. My future lessons, however, will be labeled with the proper difficulty level. I hope this new list is a more helpful way of navigating my blog!
As always, feel free to message me with any messages you may have about any of these lessons!! Happy studying! 화이팅!

hello! do you have any source to study korean? i had to reset my pc and i lost everything 😔
thank you so much for your help, wishing you the best! ♡
Hello! I'm so sorry to hear that -- that sounds so frustrating :( But it's ok! I have some asks to show you that list some good resources for learning Korean! Check them out below!:
Where to start studying
Some vocab resources
I definitely have more asks about this but ofc Tumblr makes it difficult to find them lmao so here’s a list of some more resources that I really like! I’d recommend just Googling these resources -- a lot of them have both a website and a YouTube channel or something like that, so def take advantage of them!
Talk to Me in Korean
Go Billy Korean
LingoDeer (app)
Seemile Korean (especially their Hangul playlist on YouTube!)
I’m sure there are plenty of other great resources out there but these are some really good ones I could think of off the top of my head! Hope this helps! 화이팅!
