I loved this photo so much I wanted to make it a whole post. I also am trying to stay positive in the face of this developing pandemic, so this morning I set up an orange backdrop that I got a few months ago and haven't used as yet. I put it right where the sun would come in and bake my face and I loved it. I will post a few more as well because I am trying to practice self love, especially considering the barber is closed for the next little while and I'm going to have to learn to love all this hair growing on the sides of my head (YIKES). This won't be the last photo of me that I post from this series. Here's a shot from my recent trip to Jamaica. @chandacosta, my sister @dancamille and myself were in the back yard just trying to find spots to take some pictures. This was one of the ones I really love from that session. When I see this image it really makes me think of the song, Energy by @sampa_the_great — this image to me has a strong femininity, and with the sun also carries with it an energy of strength. That's why when I was looking for a song to pair with it in my story, the first song that really resonated with the image was Energy. Oya - One of the most powerful Orishas (African Gods), she is a warrior-queen. She is a fire goddess, and the Goddess of thunder, lightning, tornadoes, winds, rainstorms and hurricanes. She is the protectress of women and patron of feminine leadership. What a great time it was with @deedotdkay capturing the essence of this powerful goddess. This is the fourth image from my African Gods series. I got so many images from this series it was really hard to decide which one was to be THE image, but reexamining them all today I was struck by the power of this one. I have so many photos stored that I haven't shared because of fear. A fear that it's not good enough. A fear that it doesn't contribute to a consistent "style". Oshun - she is the deity of the river and fresh water, luxury and pleasure, sexuality and fertility, and beauty and love. This morning, we started off this shoot in a river. It was cold and honestly kind of painful to be in the water. We got some really incredible shots though in front of a waterfall. It was a stunning morning. It was as we were walking away from the site though, and I went ahead of our small crew (it was me, @wildwomxnpoetry and @shelby.media for BTS) down into the river and looking back up that I saw this shot. The sun was still climbing in the sky though, so time was of the essence. We managed to get set up again and captured this shot, and I think, the essence of Oshun. I've loved the direction these photos have taken, the new series they've become. African Gods. It feels like the other side of the table to @problackexcellence. All the Melanin, all the beauty, all glorious. Anansi - He has always been a favorite god of mine. As long as I've known how to speak I've known about Anansi, the god of all knowledge of stories. Anansi often takes the form of a spider, and very frequently has taken the role of a trickster. This photo is the third in my new exploration of fine art photos, in fact, Parker and I took it this morning at Government House. I've really been enjoying this exploration of various themes relating to the African diaspora, African mythology, and my African heritage. I didn't even realize until fairly recently that I wanted to take these photos but as time went on, I realized I had to. I'm glad I did. Sometimes you take a series of photos, and they're different from what you envisioned, but so much better. This is an example of that. Thank you @parkerjohnson for helping me execute this vision. Oxóssi - this is spirit of meals. Oxóssi is the orixa (Òrìṣà, a Yoruba deity) of contemplation, loving the arts and beautiful things. This diety hunts with a bow and arrow (called an ofá), for good influences and positive energies. This photo has influences from several black artists I've been following and am inspired by, like @tylersphotos and @sophia_roe, and a lot of the work displayed on the @creatorsofcolor page. I've really been wanting to create my interpretation of fine art, or the fine art that I want to see. I recently mentioned that I've got several ideas I want to explore, and I didn't realize I wanted to create this picture until @dr.chelseacole, @dancamille and I were putting fresh produce in @alyssasnotes hands. I love how this shot turned out. I couldn't help myself, I had to share another photo. I got so many incredible shots of the landscape when I was in Newfoundland. This particular one, @dr.chelseacole and I had just been relaxing on the beach not 20 minutes prior to this photo being taken with an old friend of hers. When I saw that this bluff was not only accessible, but fairly easy to get to, I knew I had to go here. This is the view from Topsail Bluff, looking south over Topsail Beach. As you can see we really lucked out with the weather, though that was the theme for pretty much the entire trip.
